This episode I discuss the plan for my salty Skipper 20 sailboat. Should I add a pilothouse, or will it destroy this wonderful trailer sailboat? What's up with all that foam in the engine well of my sailboat? Should I paint my sailboat deck and hull?

I am a retiered Army SF/Intell guy. Michigan born and raised hobbyist who should have invested in a boat work shop like you have. For now I am doing the restoration of Harley Davidson bikes. Think a real smart guy from Michigan once said " If you can dream it, you can do it".. Go Motor City Boat Works. Great Video.

Absolutely yes, make a pilothouse. The world has too few pilothouse sailboats under 26’. If I like your build, I might do an identical project and bring the total remaining down to 398. Oh, and yeah, I actually own a 47’ aluminum pilothouse that my wife and I have sailed halfway around the world. Still going. I enjoy owning a boat that I can use in the snow and not feel like I’m living down inside a hollow log. Go for it!

?? In inclement weather you sit on the bridge deck, legs inside the cabin under the pilothouse and steer the boat using a tiller extension.

I originally said no pilot house but after seeing your mock-up, I say go for it. Especially if it bolts on and off, you have nothing to lose.

I was watching that boat on Craigslist, it seemed to be a decent pocket cruiser, looking forward to seeing what you do with her. You should definitely do a pilot house on the old girl.

Go with the pilothouse. Your mock up looks great, especially when you matched the curve of the coachroof to the curve of the pilothouse roof.

I have a Cape Dory 26 and I’m really considering building a hard dodger and splitting the difference between a dodger and pilothouse.

Right I think technically a pilothouse is enclosed on all four sides. So a hard dodger is a good compromise in many situations

A pilothouse made of wood instead of glass would make interesting videos. And perhaps look good.

Wood looks great but the problem is the weight. 🤔In order to keep the weight down to a minimum, a pilothouse on such a small boat must be made of composite materials

I like the pilot house idea. Maybe try a mock up like the pilot houses on fisher sailboats. The fisher pilot houses are very “shippy”looking, might be interesting on a little boat. Also may be hideous looking, but you never know…

I will have to think on that one. 🤔The space does not seem enough with 6-7’ beam and the shallowness of the cockpit

You have a long way to go on the big boat would rather see the completion of that. You mentioned there are hundred of these small sailboats in fields, boatyards and backyards. And nobody cares. I know I’ll be in the minority but I will continue to watch no matter what you do.

I hear you James. Rest assured that work on the big boat continues no matter what. We’re entering a phase where it’s difficult to show completed progress in the big boat on a weekly basis. But it is happening. 🫡 The advantage of the small boat is 70k+ viewers and more than 1,000 new subscribers do care about tiny sailboats. 😁 As a core viewer and subscriber believe me your opinion matters. Thank you and thanks for sticking with me as I try to balance all the requirements in the Boat Werks. 😁

Fair the foam, glass it in. Rubber gasket on lower unit on outboard, kinda like a sail drive.Pilothouse is always a plus... place to hide from mother nature.

Can you add a higher support for the outboard so that it can be vertically raised for sailling? Can you add a cooking station in the cockpit by adding a gunnel 18"x36" table over the cockpit seat?

I don’t think there’s a way to raise the engine height with the engine well hatch as it’s installed. I think engine stays in the well. Seems like a camp stove station is ideal for this little sailboat. Thank you

Could you mount the outboard to a vertical sliding sliding plate in the well via a winch. Maybe too much effort to turn a profit.

Compac makes a Compac 23 pilothouse that sells for $60k 😳 trailerable pilothouse sailboats are in demand 👍

It's your boat ... do whatever you want with it. I would personally restore it to original. I do question calling it a "Pilothouse", particularly after you pointed out the issue with the location of the mast support. As you rightly pointed out, the opening is already a good size and need not be made any larger. Wouldn't that mean you are simply adding a hard dodger to the coach top? By definition a pilothouse is a place out of the weather from which to pilot the vessel (generally housing the helm, compass, and navigation equipment). Will you even be able to reach and operate the tiller from within this enclosure? Based on the Compac 16 pictures that you showed, it didn't look like the addition was a full enclosure for foul weather ... was there a canvass enclosure for such occasions?

Pilothouse or hard dodger? I can see an argument for both. But you will be able to steer from the bridge deck, under cover, just as I did in the Compac 16 pilothouse- using a tiller extension. So we’ll call it a pilothouse from now on 😁. The Compac 16 pilothouse used an Alaskan bulkhead. Thanks again

I see that what you propose doing is indeed possible, I just don’t see the point. Your not going to make multi day trips therefore it the weather is crappy you’re not going sailing so what is the headroom for?

Well idk about you Bob, but I sail in all kinds of weather. And when it’s raining I like to try and stay dry. But I guess some people are “fair weather sailors.” 🤔
