Will linguistic diversity actually survive this AI revolution? Linguist Linda Heimisdóttir explains how English-centered tech and AI tools like ChatGPT pose a risk for smaller languages. In this fascinating talk, she outlines ways to effectively incorporate small languages into Large Language Models.
A linguist by training (PhD from Cornell University, 2015), Dr. Linda Heimisdóttir is the CEO of Miðeind, an Icelandic AI company which specializes in building Language Technology solutions for Icelandic and other under-resourced languages. Since joining the company in January 2023, Linda’s main focus has been on navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-based language technology, which has seen considerable disruption with the advent of Large Language Models. Prior to her appointment at Miðeind, Linda was a US-based Program Manager at Appen, where her focus was on structuring high-quality linguistic training data for NLP and AI applications.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Yes, what you say is true. When I search on Google in my mother language for information, I do not find anything useful, but when I search in English, I find all the useful information.

I speak English, but I have friends who speak/write Finnish and Spanish. I find that Google translate (and/or Facebook translation) work well, at least for these languages. Is there a barrier to letting the user speak or write their native language, internally translate it to English for input to the application, get the application response, and then translate it back to the user's language?

Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future. Putting our time and effort in activities and investments that will yield a profitable return in the future is what we should be aiming for. Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it, "I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life

As a speaker of 4 languages, I can definitely say that it is far more than that. There's a whole culture behind it. In some cases I can translate a phrase but despite it being correct, it won't make sense to a speaker of the other language. Perhaps a tacky example, but "Use the force Luke" will simply not mean anything to anyone who hasn't seen Star Wars. Now, swap Star Wars with culture...

chatgpt4o is much better at writing in Mongolian than the previous models. I think that it is an emergent ability rather than a specific training. So, the smaller languages r being covered step by step, I believe.

If the A.I. benefits a progressive unification of all the languages into a single universal one for all humans, welcome A.I. Culture does not disappear when a language stops being used but when people decide to forget this culture. Greek and Latin cultures have not been lost with the abandonment of ancient Greek and Latin. And facilitating communication and understanding between people seems to me more important than continuing to partition the planet with the maintenance of old roots that slow down the development of civilizations. I don’t mind if people of the future will speak English, Icelandic, Swahili or whatever, I would be happy if my great-grandchildren could speak the same language than any human of this planet.
