There seems to be a role for atheists/agnostics who believe that it is desirable that God should exist, and I think of Prager, Peterson and Douglass Murray, in converting the irreligious. It's as if an overt zealot would scare these people away but a "safe" non-believer won't, and they end up being the gateway drug. It Ben Shapiro is the devout Jew he claims to be then I don't think he will convert.

This perfectly shows something that became quite obvious to me, that before someone can be convince of Christianity, they first must see the problems in their own position. As long as someone feels they are on solid ground in their position, an alternative may look pretty strong, but they don't really see any reason to upend their worldview if it currently seems reasonably solid. When I was an atheist, before I could consider any religion, I had to first see how shaky atheism actually is. Prager needs to see why thinking you can achieve anything at all, let alone heaven, without God is faulty reasoning. Ben possibly needs to see the problems with the development of the Orthodox Jewish tradition, particularly after Christ. I'd also argue that its rather clear that, even if you don't accept Jesus as the messiah, the prophecies about the messiah point more clearly to the 1st century Roman empire than any other time, let alone to think he still hasn't come. It's not surprising that Jews at the time thought the messiah was coming and many false messiahs sprang up to take advantage. It was obvious to them that they were in the time of the messiah, given what scripture said.

My husband is an atheist, I converted. He says he did his research years ago, he trusts the science, and believes that given enough time science will answer each problem and question we have about the origins of the universe. He says he doesn't mind it will not be in his lifetime. I have an issue with having more children with him because statistics show that a solid majority of children with atheist fathers become atheists themselves, regardless of the mother's position. Also from that atheism, all other convictions and values we disagree on are made of. I am not the same person after I converted. Ironically, he said he likes me now more than ever because of the way I changed, but he says some people need religion to help them, but he doesn't. Do you have any advice on how should I approach him on this issue of atheism? Should I just leave it and pray for him? I offered him some evidence, but he just dismisses it all without arguments. Just jumps from one accusation to another without really digesting the evidence for each one.

The problem with Christianity is that the Old Testament (upon whose truth Christianity requires) cannot support the idea of Jesus as god. More clearly, Jesus has not fulfilled the essential tasks the messiah must achieve in order to be, the Messiah (building of the temple, world peace, in gathering of exiles etc.)

Great anecdote about Dennis Prager! When he says he believes in "earning things," a Catholic should be ready to explain the Judeo-Christian soteriological view known by scholars as 'covenantal nomism.' We enter into covenant communion by grace alone (apart from meritorious works). But we stay -- indeed, we grow -- in covenant communion through persevering obedience. So, according to Scripture and Tradition, while initial salvation (by which the unjust are transferred from Satan's kingdom into God's, cf. Col 1:13) is sheer grace, final salvation (by which those who die in a state of grace are transfigured from "glory to glory," as they enter heaven) is a "misthos" (i.e., reward/wage, cf. Matt 20:8; 2 Cor 3:18).

Salvation cannot be earned because the imperfect can never achieve perfection. Especially taking into account that God is eternal and therefore eternally perfect. The perfection one would need to earn is retroactive which is obviously impossible. However why not point out to Prager that we do earn reward. Grace doesn't eliminate the idea of needing to work out your salvation, and there are plenty of scriptures that indicate reward based on your works.

I really enjoy listening to what Jewish thinkers have to say, but Prager and Shapiro are two of my favorites. They are both very articulate and deep thinkers, and are always really good at not taking their pre-established worldview for granted (Prager more than Shapiro, but he's also older). But I especially love their respect for Christianity. It is unfortunately true that we Christians have not earned much respect from the Jews, but these two men are able to look past the offenses we've done against their people and see what Christianity has done for the world. I think they are also able to look seriously at how Christians did actually play a large role in helping the Jews, especially in the Holocaust. If you research The Righteous Among the Nations and investigate some of the people's stories, you will see that more than anybody else, it was Christians standing up for the Jews. Messianic Jews also look to countries where anti-semitism hasn't been as deeply rooted, and have been amazed at the love Christians have for the Jewish people there. Dr. Erez Soref at One For Israel and Michael Brown at Line of Fire have both talked about this. I think Dennis Prager's objection can easily be answered. Yes, you must earn heaven, but can you? Can you actually be good enough for a perfectly holy God? Socialism is known to destroy society, but would a doctor helping a needing patient who is unable to pay be a bad thing? We must be careful not to let our view of Capitalism (a great system) keep us from doing and receiving good, especially when it comes to those who need our kindness. Mercy in the hands of a fool is bad, because it will be exploited; but mercy in the hands of the wise is good. Is anybody more wise than God?

I am neither Jewish nor Christian, I am Orthodox Hindu. As someone sort of outside the religious discussions and ideas of Abrahamic faiths, I found this to be quite interesting. I thought I would share my thoughts. I have some Christian friends, some Jewish friends, some Muslim friends, some Hindu, and even a Shinto friend. It is always interesting to be able to discuss our thoughts, how we view God, life, duties and responsibilities, etc. I believe that I am living a good life, doing good things, and I wish to be a good family man, and through serving others as a husband and father seek salvation with God in the end. My opinions and beliefs are aligned with the Vedas, the authority scripture (others are verifiably man made legal or social texts, I do not follow those only the Vedas). From discussions with Christians, I value a lot of the same things: I value the inherent importance of life itself, especially human life, I value family and marriage, I value monogamy and togetherness, I value tradition and prayer, I value hard work, and I value leaving things to God to help me and guide me through life. However, these friends have also kindly asked if I may wish to convert. I listened to their positions as a way to understand their thoughts and opinions, however made it clear that I believe I am doing right and wish to live as I am. I have respect for the level of self control and moral responsibility that Christians and Catholics, Jews, and fellow Hindus of my ilk, such as my father, have, because they all have such good moral intentions and actions. If you live well as a Catholic, I am glad, I pray God is with you, and I know He is always loving and caring for us all. Same for those who live as Jews. Though I respect your beliefs and lifestyles, I have my own beliefs and lifestyles. I put down a clear line between us, however I am glad to shake hands and have a conversation regardless. I enjoyed this episode, it was quite interesting albeit I of course had trouble understanding some of the very detailed ideas you speak of due to my limitations on biblical knowledge. Regardless, I enjoyed it. Good day and God bless, I hope you are all well this Christmas and this New Year. 👋🏾

@rennyskiathitis8178
@rennyskiathitis8178 Жыл бұрын
That makes perfect sense. The Jewish Messiah is not the Christian Messiah. In Judaism the Messiah is a religious leader like Jesus, but he is also a political or military leader as well. In Jesus's time for him to be the Messiah in the Jewish perspective, is if he waged war against the Romans and and helped the Jewish people regain independence over their homeland. One of the requirements of the Messiah is to reestablish the Jewish Monarchy. That is one of the main reasons Jews consider Jesus to be one of the many false Messiah's. Not metaphorically ether, he has to quite literally wage war on the Romans.

@@christopherton The messiah in the Jewish conception is not meant to be a "king of kings," as that role is reserved for God alone. @@christopherton The Messiah is a person, not a God. We are speaking of the historical figure Jesus. Remember Judaism created the concept of the Messiah. We are speaking about the Jewish concept of Messiah, not Christian. I'm trying to explain to you why Jews reject the idea that Jesus was the Messiah. The Messiah is not God, he is not immortal, he is a human man. So when people speak about Jesus being the Messiah, they speak of him in a historical context of the 1st century AD. God and Messiah are not synonyms.

I often wonder what his responses would be, because I've talked with other Jewish individuals that had no response. The ones I talked to were quite frankly amazed that they missed some of the nuggets God placed in the Old Testament to direct us to Jesus. If Ben converted to Christianity it would be like Paul in modern day. The problem is Ben is he will debate his position ad nauseam until everyone is exhausted and he may not be right but at the end his wall is up and he wont budge on anything, but at least he will listen to the other person's perspective. Keep praying.

Do not be so quick to condemn them, for Jesus Himself was a practicing Jew and led many other Jews closer to the Father. Would you shun your own Savior? Our salvation has come from the Jews, so said Jesus to the Samaritan woman at the well in John Chp 4. Also, your name. That strikes me as incredibly...insinuating. Do you mean to imply congenital conditions or ethnic identity? Because I'd direct you to the verse about removing the plank from your eye before tending to the speck in your brother's. Jesus has no place for racists in His Kingdom. Again He CONSTANTLY made the point to reach out to the shunned Samaritan people, seen as dirty and lesser. Besides, there are countless brilliant people of all races. If you're looking at blacks in particular, may I direct you to Larry Elder, Thomas Sowell, Fredrick Douglass, Saint Moses the Black, and Imaculee of the Rwandan Genocide. Genetics don't matter. Your heart, mind, and devotion to God matter.

I’ve actually got a decent response to Dennis Prager: if you don’t believe in grace through faith that is salvation and you want to earn yours, what makes that different from any other religion? What’s the difference between Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, etc.? All of these religions are always trying to work up to God and that you somehow have to do a certain amount of things to secure your seat with that god. Christianity is the only exception hence realizing that us, as imperfect humans, could never come close to God without God intervening on our behalf

How is it that two Catholics are unaware that they don’t EARN their own salvation. Yes, there is grace, but what is the point of obedience to the commandments and confession of sins for repentance? “If ye love me, keep my commandments”. If one does not do these things one does NOT get to receive the grace that Jesus offers. Ergo, one EARNS salvation through grace. C’mon guys. Otherwise Catholics are the same as most Christian denominations… aka “accept Jesus as Lord and boom! You’re saved”. It doesn’t work like that.

The reason someone should reject Christianity isn’t the trinity, as all minds we know of are triune, being a consciousness, a subconsciousness, and the connection between them, it isn’t G-d being a man, it is torture of sinners. Islam has a less problematic view, but it’s still mostly torture, and therefore no moral human can support either of them without being a fraud.
