In this video, Will Crockett helps dispel the confusion between AdobeRGB and sRGB and when to use them. This is a follow-up video to a previous video on this channel on when to use AdobeRGB vs sRGB, and especially why colors appear dull to a majority of photographers when they switch their camera setting from sRGB to AdobeRGB.
“In addition to being considered one of the architects of contemporary digital portrait workflow, Will Crockett is the driving force that fuels one of the photo industry’s most innovative resources - shootsmarter.com. After over 28 years as a world class commercial photographer reeling in assignments from high line clients like Pfizer, Boeing, Hewlett Packard, Cadbury, United Airlines and TIME magazine.

That was awesome. Thank you SO much Will. I had read so many conflicting comments, both telling me that 'their' colour space was what I should be using. I settled on sRGB a while back, but couldn't remember why I chose that. I picked up a current photography magazine that (basically) told me I needed to be using Adobe RGB. Now that I have seen your video...I get it! Thank you so very much. I nearly decided I would just shoot/process in monochrome (which I love anyway!). Best regards, Ash.

Great explanation. Simplified difference clearly. If most customers want sSGB color space then that's what I'll use. Adobe RGB can still be used for editing with the correct monitor and output to a Adobe RGB print house, if that is required.

Hi Will, I'm not even a photographer, let alone professional photographer (although I aspire to be a half-competent hobbyist some day!) The argument goes like this: You shoot in raw + Adobe RGB, then process the pictures however you're going to process them (e.g. adjust white balance or whatnot) and then "remaster" your image down to the jpg + sRGB version that will be sent to the client or uploaded to Flickr. You don't shoot in Adobe RGB because it produces a better colored image. Rather, you shoot in Adobe RGB because it produces an image that is better for editing, and which will (hopefully) remaster down to a better colored image. That's the argument as I've read it. It *sounds* like it makes sense, but that doesn't make it necessarily true. What do you think about this argument for using Adobe RGB?

Great video. As a newbie to most of this I was curious. I have a Canon Pixma 9500 Pro, that's on loan. I printed out a couple pictures and while the colors were close to what I edited them...I wanted to get them closer to what was edited. I also am saving for a monitor that can be properly calibrated. Anyways thanks again for the video!

Hello Will Crockett Your smartphone looks like a Samsung Note 3. Many Samsung smartphones, and now tablets since 5 years are equipped with Super AMOLED displays. The spectrum of those panels makes them very wide gamut, much larger than sRGB of course but also than Adobe RGB. I encourage you do measure that to check this out. If you don't have the tools for, I make software to evaluate mobile displays. sRGB is legacy already as the whole industry is moving towards wide gamut displays. sRGB really is on its way out, pushed by mobile and Ultra HD Rec. 2020. I know that some photographers are still thinking print above everything else but this not really the way people view images anymore, and it will only accelerate in this direction. Except as workaround, using conversion to avoid flawed color management of some printing labs, it's not wise nor future proof to shoot in sRGB JPEG today. Because people, if they're not already will watch content on high resolution wide gamut displays. Other than that, the video seem to have been done quickly and lack editing in some parts, is there a couple confusions as the wider gamut is described to clip colors more?

Great video Mr Crockett, I agree on your opinion about the issue of displaying adobeRGB images on everyday sRGB screens but don't you agree that it makes a difference in the final product if you post produce an image shot in AdobeRGB and then "downsample" it into sRGB? I think this way there is much more color information to work with in post production.Best regards, M.

Maybe it should be mentioned the Samsung tab S is the first screen with 98% sRGB, not as someone else stated... Anything else is somewhere 50 (Retina Macbooks) and 90%sRGB (latest iPad)

Hey *****, about the Tab S that's factually incorrect: Tab S gamut is very wide and its primaries don't match with either Adobe RGB or sRGB in any screen mode. Galaxy Tab S 10.5 Display and Performance Erica Griffin is analyzing based on measurements made with the tools I developed and a spectrophotometer. If you have the time, watch the whole video :)

Hey Will, any chance you can shed some light on an issue of mine? I'm having issues when I import my CR2 files into LR. I shoot live music, so the images are already quite saturated in some cases, but once I import them into LR they just become unusable. Just horribly saturated. They don't show up like this in the previews either. It's been happening since I got my Canon 6D. One of my mates said try AdobeRGB which is why I thought you might have some insight into this. Cheers mate!

Lightroom doesn't let you set a profile, and the working space is proPhoto, which is bigger than even adobe RGB. Hence, there is an upscaling of the colors. However, you can set the profile at the time of export.

Hi Will, I am on the verge of buying a monitor, and also on the verge of getting mad in this whole research for the same. I am not much of a tech savvy guy. 1. I guess that if the monitor doesn't have an internal 3D LUT, then I shouldn't buy a wide gamut monitor. But what if I also buy an AMD Firepro GPU with an internal 3D LUT. 2. Even though I've to finally "Save for Web" and save it as sRGB, does shooting and coloring a video in Adobe RGB help in any kind of extra detailing? 3. I have to make content primarily for KZfaq. In March 2018, does KZfaq allow something like an embedded adobe RGB, which is detected whenever the video is played on a wide gamut display? Instead of simply going for an sRGB workflow, I feel concerned because I've come to know that most of the cellphones these days have a default and non-changing (non color managed) adobe RGB display. Please answer soon. Grateful.

I'm confused Will, if a Pro Lab can't print sRGB, how is your home based inkjet able to? I have an Epson R1800 that was "Supposed" to be a great little printer but I have NEVER managed to get a good print out of it. I spent MONTHS trying to get it working good and wasted hundreds of dollars of ink and paper. After all the research I did I could not find a solution, but I do recall that apparently there were no printers that did anything other than sRGB. Thank you!
@HybridphotoPro
@HybridphotoPro 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, Excellent question sir. The inks in the high end inkjet are pigments and are literally brighter, more saturated colors than can be produced by exposing silver hallide {the light sensitive stuff in color paper} and processing IT into colored dye. The R1800 is a terrific little printer for the bux but it's all how you send the file to the printer in order to give it the info it needs to make a great print. Adobe products tend to make it more difficult than it needs to be. I have found that Adobe PhotoShop ELEMENTS actually is easier to make a great print than the big full version of Photoshop if that helps? Best bet, is to do as Gary says and stay in sRGB all the time and send to a lab. Hope that helps? WC

Unless you specifically know you're going to need Adobe RGB in the future (most do not), then capturing in sRGB is best.

When you export out of Lightroom and/or Photoshop, it's best to keep that same sRGB profile throughout, even if you capture in RAW at the beginning.

I can't see the point of using Adobe rgb considering the majority of monitors can only produce up to 78% Adobe rgb but can reproduce srgb to 100%. I am matching prints on my screen BenQ pd3200Q to the prints on my Canon pro 100. I produce profiles to be as accurate as possible so Adobe is actually as useful as tits on a bull. Oh and actually you mentioned a laptop. Never use a laptop to profile prints. For instance a brand new Lenovo THinkpad came up with a woeful 46% of Adobe RGB.
