I commented very similar things when Emma got the job. I think the bit she may try to do extra is to maybe try to broaden the appeal of the game to attract more skillful youth players, who can be trained up to be more athletic as they get older, rather than athletes trying to play catchup on ten years of skills, which has less chance of producing the same quality of player. Remember that Europe only just went professional, so they are still developing their talent pool. They will try to copy the men's game, where Jude Bellingham, for example, is a star already. If he were from US, he might still be in college sport, focusing on athletic ability.

It will be interesting to see if players like Smith, Swanson,?Williams Thompson and the other young forwards can learn to be more technical given there style of play which has been about speed and 1v1 ability. Can they evolve there games beyond they way they have been playing
@mlsarchitect

You can't learn to be more technical after 15 or 16 -- probably younger. What they can do is learn tactics and follow strategies. You cant learn how to do Neymar or Bonmati; you can learn to follow Keira Walsh's lead -- sort of.

I don't think so for most of them except Mal who already has the most technical ability out of the ones you mentioned. They are all quite one dimensional (using speed and 1v1) in their games which speaks to the focus on physicality in the youth system.

Hayes success will depend on how well and quickly she learns the international level of play. Despite having a lot of success at club level she had no international exposure or any coaching experience internationally 😅

Here’s what I don’t get: On the one hand the panel talks about how they only put two American players on their team of the year, and how the American game is more about athleticism than football, compared to the European game. Minutes later Ali Krieger says ”we have the best players in the world”. How does that compute? Is it an American thing to say things like that even when you know it isn’t true, or what is the thought process?

We don’t have the best players in the world. We may have speed but having speed is not by any means make you a top talent. Look at are youth league no WC since 2012 now we are expecting some of those same youths to try and win a WC at the senior level

The players under Emma currently say that she has made their game better. Sam Kerr said the same thing. She is a better player because of Emma. Her movement with the ball and off the ball is better. Niamh Charles has become a more versatile player. From being a winger to one of the best fullbacks. Now she can play on any part of the field if needed. Millie Bright joined Chelsea as striker and is now one of the best centre-backs in Europe. We saw in the World Cup I think where after conceding she was put to strike and actually scored in that game. Emma can make even the best better. She takes her time with players and Chelsea gave her time even after losing her first eleven matches after joining Chelsea. Now she has a lot of silverware with the girls.

Definitely agree. If we get more women in the states to play in Europe, they’d be making themselves better players on/off the field. Different styles of playing soccer

English men’s clubs used to be all athleticism and poor technique until we started hiring top coaches from the continent like Arsene Wenger. Now the top English clubs are as good as any club in Europe.

Emma Hayes is not a 'European coach', she's a British coach -- even before Brexit there was a difference. The US at least has the instinct for survival and pragmatism to accept their deficiencies and begin to address them, something that the Brits (in their arrogance) are lacking. But there is still a touch of the Brits arrogance left in this fantasy of 'American exceptionalism'. The idea seems to be that the Spanish and genuinely European coaches like Jonatan Giraldez will train the troops for the (more acceptable) Anglo general, Emma, to lead to battle. The problem is that it's in the heat of battle that you need to apply the tactics and strategies and the British play the most American game in greater Europe. The saving grace may be that the Spanish have a civil war of their own that undermines their game and prevents Barcelona and Catalan players (Mapi, Patri, Claudia Pina...) and coaches (Cortes, Giraldez, Pep) from dominating their national team as they should. Under normal circumstances, the World Cup would have been won far more comfortably -- Japan would have never happened and England would have gone the way of Emma's Chelski; and there would be a dynasty ahead As it is, under Madrid's Tome, Spain may not get past Germany and the Netherlands to make the Olympics. As for the best athletes thing -- them days are done. Everybody has a gym these days. Football is professional in Europe now.

The UK is a European country in the European continent. The Brits voted to leave the EU which is an organization, not a continent but an organisation. There are 44 countries in the European continent only 27 of those European countries are members of the EU. Many Europeans do not wish to be members of the EU and are perfectly happy not to be. The snobbery and arrogance seem to be coming from the EU countries who have a real problem that the UK voted to leave "the club". It's Been 7 years since the Brits voted to leave. Move on.

@@DustyBarrels464Why do you keep saying 'Britain' and 'the UK'? Scotland and Wales are also 'Britain' and 'the UK', and Northern Ireland is also 'the UK.' Scotland and Wales have nothing to do with England, but by saying, 'British people' you're also referring to the people from both of those counties. And the England team aren't the 'British team' and the their English fans aren't 'Britain fans.' Your problem, like 90% of Americans, seems to be that you think Britain = England, it doesn't. When you refer to a 'British accent' it's doesn't make any sense. A 'British accent' doesn't exist. If you heard a Scottish person talking, would you say they have a 'British accent'? I highly doubt it, but for some reason an English accent is labelled a 'British accent.' In fact, I've never once in my life heard an American say that a Scottish accent is a 'British accent', which goes to show you that the vast majority of Americans don't know that Scotland is just a 'British' as England is. Sorry about the rant, but this needs to be learned.

beyond Barca and, Lyon occasionally, who is technical in Europe? i watch these leagues. i dont see amazing passing, in air play, or free kicks regularly. i see alot of poor futbol tbh. i dont get this love for the euro game. mbe 4 teams max, the all star teams, show any ability on the ball. 4 teams out of how many spread across all those Euro leagues? Lyon strung together a beautiful scoring chance with Horan the other day, but ffs, thats with all that top tier talent around her, and it was mostly due to Horans fantastic pass. happens rarely though. 3/4 of the eyes in Europe watching the games via streaming are gamblers btw. not there to enjoy the game, just there for the $$$$. you can tell easily if you read the chat. want the womens game to grow, EVERYWHERE. whats currently happening doesnt seem to be the way to do it.

The USWNT was thoroughly outplayed by Portugal in the last World Cup -- they were fortunate to get out of the group. But keep banging your own drum and blaming your defeats on LGBTQ, attitude, kneeling at the anthem and lack of luv for the Star Spangled Banner, it'll get you a gold in the Olympics I'm sure.
