Candidates in France on Tuesday faced a deadline to register for the run-off round of a high-stakes parliamentary election, as President Emmanuel Macron's centrist camp and a left-wing alliance scrambled to prevent the far right from taking power. France 24’s Philip Turle takes a look at whether they may be able to reach a deal on tactical voting to keep Marine Le Pen’s National Rally from a parliamentary majority.

huh? Forming coalitions is a staple of any democracy. Just because you don't like doesnn't make it undemocratic.

@@williamhenry8914Exactly: a coalition is about agreeing about a common program, not barricading against someone, who you like even less then "allies" you hate, to get in power. That's called "Uneasy Alliance" at best, on the principle that the enemy of my enemy is less hostile: it is called "A TRUCE" at best, not certainly a "COALITION", and therfore is completely against the unwritten rules of democracy and Fair Play.

Why? Cant groups gather to make a political alliance? Whats the problem? Marine le pen did not get 67% of the vote at the end of the day. And no one else to add up to her minionsleague

The 67% who reject the far right agree to work together to form a pluralist governing coalition. It is more democratic than letting the 33% act like if they were the majority because of an outdated winner takes it all non-proportional voting system.

It is not good practice in politics of France . France is facing a very critical situation because of the mass illegal migration in the country . The Far Right is a party who is working on these issues of illegal immigration . Now if the other parties like Left and Emmanuel Marcon's party make such alliance which will give support to illegal immigration and millions of illegal migration will take a. disadvantage of this nonsense alliance . This should not be like this. These policies of Left Party show that they are. not loyal and faithful tobthe country.

@Leptospirosi

Correction: forming a coalition over a program is perfectly acceptable. Creating a mishmach of everyone and their mothers, who were insulting each other until a week ago, with the sole purpose of ousting the ONLY party which represents a definite majority of the voters, that's is undemocratic, because everyone KNOWS that governing the nation with such a deranged "coalition" would be "IMPOSSIBLE", which means you'd just drag the nation to hell for the next 2 years at least, rather then let someone, with different ideas from yours, to win in a fair election. The only "BOT" here is you!

this IS what democracy looks like because 2/3 of the French people do not want the far right in government so 2/3 of the public will stop 1/3 from winning an outright majority.
