Never think that the truth will get you out of it. The police construct their questioning in such a way as to get the answers they want from you and they know far better than you how the courts will view a situation. You might think that your statements show your innocence but almost anything can be twisted to put you in a bad light. A solicitor is able to tell you when police threats are empty and which questions might harm your defence if not answered. If you make an innocent mistake the police can get you on the defensive and make you look very guilty. Let the truth come out in court, not in an environment where the state can mis-represent your demeanour to the court. In most circumstances you can only talk yourself into trouble. Don't forget that there are so many things that most people aren't even aware are illegal and if you inadvertantly admit to one of them the state can get very vindictive. There are also plain errors made by the police in gathering evidence and you are not the one the court is going to believe. Don't get baited by the old "if you've got nothing to hide" line. It's quite ironic how frequently the police get agitated by being recorded.

No comment to every question. Police are not interested in you “getting your side of the story across” or “helping you clear your name.” They just want a conviction, whether you’re guilty or not.

When I was recently arrested for cyber crime they asked if I wanted a solicitor, I declined and just gave them vague details on the offense. Next time, when they interview me I'll consider a solicitor but honestly, I'm not too bothered by it.

You're not thinking things through clearly, Kane. You might have gotten through a questionable situation once, but stop and think about it for a minute. Pigs just want to wrap up the job. They've also seen lots of cop shows that empowers them, the real pigs, to be judgmental, critical, bullying etc and don't forget they're armed in an unarmed society. They are almost sure to exceed their authority somehow. Stop and think.

Never use a duty solicitor. There friends with the police

Some, yes, but it depends. If you have no option - e.g. you don't have the number of a solicitor handy - use a duty solicitor but listen to what they say to see if they're trying to make sure you go free or just trying to make things easy for them. For example, them telling you to say "no comment" and telling you the cops don't have a leg to stand on is one thing, them telling you something like "it's probably best if you just plead guilty" is another thing.

Are you American or something? You seem to have got confused, like Americans do, between the principle of the argument and the content of the argument. The principle is that you should not undergo something that takes skill and experience without someone skilled and experience. The content (solicitor and brain surgeon) were just used to illustrate. She's clearly not comparing herself to the skill of a brain surgeon.
