Paxton Miller check out Jonathan W on KZfaq. He does lots of first starts with the engine on the ground. Waylon Wire’s Old Iron does too, but he lights his pants leg on fire among other things.

If you put your timing mark on the firing point wheather it be 10 degrease or whatever, then turn the distributor until the points just click or spark then your ignition timing will be set. Ive been around this sort of ignition since the mid 80s

I have a 270 in my 1961 GMC Junior stepvan. I just got mine running after 4 years of sitting. They're a great engine. If you need parts I find most everything I need at RockAuto. Their located in Madison, WI and they ship to me in Vancouver, BC, so I would think they would also ship to Alaska. I just bought a starter, fuel pump, carb kit and complete gasket set for my 270 from them. I really enjoyed your video.

I've done that 180 out with the distributor. I battled for hours with my junkyard engine, fueled by ignorance, until on the advice of a better mechanic, I pulled the plug and felt for the stronger compression stroke when it turned over by remote starter button. Fixed the distributor alignment. What a relief when it fired right up! Your videos are great! Thanks!

50 for a running engine great deal. I had a old mud truck I needed an engine for. Happened to get a 300 six for 20. My buddies landlord had a e150 van that sat for 5 years he used as storage. The guy told me if it ran give him 20 for the engine. If it didn't run I could have it for free. Checked it the engine was free so pulled it out of the van. The oil pan was shot but had another one for it. Pulled the oil pan off and it looked like new inside. Got it in my mud truck got it all hooked up and it fired right up. Ran it for over a year with no problems at all. Even daily drove it to work. The thing that sucked was getting 160 miles to a tank of gas. Had a t-18 4 speed in it, lockers with 4.11 gears, 3 inch lift with 36" tires on it. Thing was a beast in the mud. Ended up selling it back to my buddy who I bought it from. Now I wish I never sold it I so miss that truck. Oh it was a 82 f150. Yes I did pay the guy 20 for the engine.

Hello from Australia. I my younger days ( I am now 78 years old) I worked on many of these engines, and to set the timing watch for the inlet valve to close on #1 cylinder then watch for the valve rockers on #6 cylinder and as the pistons (#1 and#6) are coming to TDC watch for the overlap (exhaust closing, inlet opening) once these are balanced you have top dead centre. the next step is to put a mark on the harmonic balancer and rotate it backwards about 1/2", make sure that the rotor button is lined up with #1 plug lead on the dizzy cap and set the points gap to 0.015 thou, retard the dizzy and place a strip of cellophane off of a cigarette packet and advance the dizzy until the cellophane just slips out your timing is now set in the basic position to start, fine tune later on. this system works for most engines'

Hello my friend I am so happy to see another one of your videos, I can't believe that a young guy like yourself is bringing back all this old mostly military iron. That tongue and a half is going to be a beast. I can tell you I've always liked 6-cylinder Motors weather it be a Chevy a GM a Ford or the Slant six of Chrysler they are all bulletproof Motors definitely worth the recognition that they should be getting. I've seen a slant 6 in 67 Barracuda that was built up unbelievable six one barrel carburetor strong now I'm telling you I'm going by what this man told me that was a 10 second car I almost bought it but I didn't want to buy something that had already been messed with if you know what I mean. But I can tell you the way that thing sounded was scary scary strong motor. I'm sure I wouldn't have never had a problem with it it had been professionally built this man that was selling it was a Certified mechanic 4 Chrysler so but still I wanted a project that I could do myself so I did. Anyway my friend so glad you're sharing this video with us. Stay safe stay well and as always God bless

This is very wild. I’m currently working on a Chevy 235 (1958 though but still close). The story on why I’m working on it is because a speed shop rebuilt it and with less than an hour of runtime it spun a bearing among many other issues they caused. They charged my friend $6,800 and now I’m the one fixing it. The moral to my story is that the mechanics today do not understand these old motors but here you are firing them up on your garage floor with used parts you have lying around. Keep up the good work friend! Always good to save the old iron,

Looks good Austin. If you sand off the distributor deck, on the block, the first three numbers should be one of the following 228, 236, 248, 256, 270 or 302. On the GMC engines the first three numbers of the serial number, on the distributor deck, were the displacement of the engine (GMC only) The 302 was built in a civilian model and also a Military version, the Military version had a blocked off fuel pump port and front webbing to accommodate an air compressor. Make it work, man!

Love seeing old motors firing up.. reminds me many years ago, i bet a workmate I could run a Bedford CA camper van without a carb on it, the engine access is from inside the cab between the front seats, so carb off, thumb over petrol pipe but just a slight squirt from under the thumb down the inlet manifold and fired it up, ran like a diesel would, the more you let it squirt in (petrol) the faster it ran..lol/ won my bet but the guy thought I was mad..BUT I proved my point.. Thanks for the video. More to watch soon I hope - Ian - UK.

for starter engagement, grind angles on the ends of the sprocket teeth the opposite direction from the angles that wear on them over time. that way the teeth stop bouncing off each other when they try to engage. Also lube the engagement mechanism with silicone lube.

In my Teens in New Zealand we played a lot with Jimmy 270's and 302's. They were pretty common thanks to the American government gifting us several thousand war damaged trucks. I knew a few different guys running them in 37-38 Chevy coupes and nearly bought a 54 Belair with one ,but my Dad said "no way,was a 15 yr old going to have a weapon like that!" My guess is that your 270 was rode hard after the rebuild and didn't have the oil changed often. The gray color in the oil is metal. They are tough and well designed. Several people are making full pressure conversions for the "Babbitt Beater" Chevy's. These work very well. Patrick's in Casa Grande Az. is one. I think you will have to change the radiator support to a GMC and possibly reverse the header (mount) on the radiator to get clearance. We put a 302 GMC in one years ago. My 1943 Yellow Coach Div. CCKW (2,700 miles) starts on 6v like yours did in 12. Good ground and thick cables. I enjoy your videos so keep 'em coming.

Once I know I am on top dead center, I take that plug wire and hold it to something that is grounded and just rotate the distributor till I get spark.... My best luck for a just start and run is just a skosh back and just a hair.. not very much... and it will fire and run.... of course you know that I am sure but for this video, trying to make it look easy an it never is as the fuel is wrong or the wire falls off or you miss catching that spot... you get it. I know that they made cam's for the 270's and a tri power as well but for my best luck, took a while but made a two "two barrel" carb set up and that rig ran at arlington speed way for about five years in the winners lane. I also got a mag from a company called JC Whitney as they sold a little of everything back then. Kinda a big junk store for the most part but you did get what you were paying for/LOL

Need to put some Joe Gibbs racing additive to your oil has a lot of zinc in it and will keep your lifters happy. zinc for old engines you have to add yourself other companies have it also. That why you cannot use regular oil in chainsaws and must use 2 cycle oil. When I was a kid zinc was in all oils. But it stops up catallic converators so no zinc in new oils. So new type oils for newer cars will kill your old engine.
