In this episode of Iron City garage, Joe and Richie get to work on the 57 Chevy Belair 2 door that Pete rescued out of Troy Hill in Pittsburgh two weeks ago. You normally do not find them this nice over here in Pittsburgh, but this one is the exception. Stay tuned to see what Joe and Richie can get done to this awesome piece of American automotive history and find out for yourself if it will run.

The gold v was on Belair models with v8..the silver v was on 210 models with v8…. Both 265, and 283 engines were available in 1957.. some early 1957 265 engines (not all) were painted yellow where all 283s were orange. In early production they did this as to not confuse engines..

I grew up with these cars and am about the same age as Joe. We had a 56 Chevrolet 150 six cylinder three speed that my grandfather purchased from the original owner back in 1961. In 1968 my grandfather gave the car to my dad for us kids to drive (actually I claimed it). The car was original and smoked like a freight train. My father and I took the engine to the point where it was not completely remanufactured but all the excessive wear parts in the engine were replaced (basically bored with new pistons a good valve job and of course the crankshaft turned , and the usual bearings and such). I drove the car for a couple of years and after high school used it to commute from Jacksonville Fl to Tampa Fl on the weekends as I went to school down in Tampa. I75 was a four lane divided highway and was concrete during that time the speed limit was 70mph. The car was reliable and economical but a young man with a lead foot really taxed that six cylinder. Later on I acquired a .060 over 283 from a friend of mine and the car had an easier time out on the highway (FHP and I would become acquaintances from time to time). These automobiles the tri-five Chevrolets and they were really good cars, and they were simple to maintain. Incidentally Ford outsold Chevrolet for the 1957 model year, and the tri-five Fords were real good cars as well. Certainly hope you find a good home for this car.🥸👍👍👍👍👍👍

Joe should’ve left the valve covers off when he first started it to see if oil was getting up through the push rods with all that sludge he dug out . I had 4 57s in the 60s and I always thought they were the prettiest Chevy ever made and when you took it for a test ride you didn’t hear that fan belt squealing? Great video 👍

It was my understanding that the Gold Trim was a package deal which gave you the gold grille, gold Chevrolet Script, Gold V's and gold cufflinks on the fenders. Was only available on V8 Bel Airs. You could actually still opt for the 265 V8 in 1957. However it only came with a 2 barrel, single exhaust and teamed with either a 3-speed manual or a Powerglide. The engine was painted YELLOW or what some aficionado's dub "Chartreuse".

My aunt had this 283, 2 bbl in a 60 belair. Sludgy oil with this. We threw in a quart of kerosene an ran it for 10 minutes. Really helped clean out the sludge and then we replaced the valve cover gaskets. We put havoline in it. No more sludging problems. Penzoil was bad to sludge also

I had to stop watching when you were gunning and racing that engine. I always thought that you are supposed to let an old engine that has not been run in a long time have a chance to warm up and seal all those things you said wete all loose. Give the valves and push rods a chance to loosen up' Also keeping the valve covers off and cranking without plugs gives you a chance to see that the push rods are turning and all valves are operating. Had there been a problem you could have bent something.JMHO
