An old trick I learned from an old man is to fill the fuel filter up with ATF which cleans the injector pump and injectors, he also says it primes up easier. Like the videos, keep up the good work!

I had to do the same thing with a mid 90's Cummins Ram. Ended up draining both batteries trying to start it before the shop Foreman showed me how big of a dumbass I could be. Fired right up after filling the filter housing with ATF.
@bertgrau3934

A couple of things, fill the fuel filter and the pump there's a plug on top of the pump remove, there may be a filter in there, if so remove it as well then fill the pump. It can still take a while to get it started if the fuel lines from the pump to the fuel injectors are dry as well. Been there done that many times working with older Cummins engines

When I started my truck driving career I started in a 1979 international trans star cab over and about 5 years into having this job I was hauling a 16x80 mobile home and we was going down a 2 lane state highway and got hit head on by another 18 wheeler I bearly survived it . I never drove a cab over again that was the worst time of my life lots of recovery and lots of mental recovery!!!!! .

They LOOK AWESOME, but they are a real BITCH to deal with. If it's got a sleeper, u gotta climb over the transmission to get to it. The ride is rough as hell & your less likely to walk away in a serious accident. Those ole cabover drivers were the TRUCK HARD ASS' in the trucking game back on the day. MAD RESPECT FOR ALL THOSE GENTLEMAN.

I owned a '76 Astro in the early '80's. It had been owned originally by the long since defunct Branch Trucking. My "Jimmy" was powered by a 290 Cummins with a Fuller 10 speed transmission, Eaton rears and Rayco suspension. I drove it for about five years hauling the piggy back trailers throughout the New England states from the terminals in Alexandria Va. I had a good times with that truck and made some $ with it. Fond memories.

I wish I had a way to send you a few pics. I just sold my dad's 1979 gmc cabover that was setting for 10 years plus . New batterys spraying lots of starter fluid and wd40 over and over it finely fired up and made about a 5mile trip to its new owners home . I didn't think I would ever see another one like it . But this one on your video looks a lot like it. My dad had a D9 cat bull Dozer he hauled on the truck to do land scapping work. It wasn't to pretty but it was always dependable .Either way just reminded me of him and his truck. God bless .

Ive got tons of memories going trucking with dad back in the late 80s in his 1979 astro. It was a spec'd truck. It had round tanks like this one, an was converted to hub pilot aluminum wheels with a 400 big cam and a 13 speed. I know where the truck is but there isn't much left to it, pretty much just the cab an frame rails left an the frame rails are junk. But id use the cab if i could find a parts truck.

Oh man brings back memories from my childhood. My grandfather had a Chevrolet model, a 1979 Chevrolet Titan. He drove this truck 308 miles round trip six days a week hauling milk. Ran this truck for 18 years and racked up a little over a Million miles. My uncle said in that time it had two in frame rebuilds.

When you open the radiator cap and it has pressure on it, that is a good thing and don’t necessarily mean you have a bad head, the only time you have a bad head is if you have foam, or bubbles coming up in your antifreeze or coolant. That means you have a blown head gasket, and compression is getting into the coolant system, and that isn’t good. If that happens, leave the radiator cap loose so that it won’t build up pressure, because when you shut the engine off, that coolant can get into the cylinder chamber. Pressure in the cooler system is a good thing, means you don’t have any leaks, and everything is working the way it should.

I use to work for a concrete company and one of my jobs was delivering concrete septic tanks and hulling block. The truck was an 81 GMC Cabover just like that one. It had a 24 flatbed with a crane on the back. I hate cabovers they are awkward to drive and all over the road; and they hard to get in and out of when your drunk. 🤦 An old guy could get hurt just getting in one of them dang Ol' Cabovers..🤣😂🤣

I remember these old dogs! Used to see them all over the road. When I was a high schooler, my step dad gave me a job working for him. He was a bed bugger (household moving). Ogden Transfer and Storage and he worked for Cartwright Van Lines before that. He had '78 Mack Cruiseliner, 5 speed, 300 Maxadyne engine. From '79 t0 '82 I spent my summers on the road working my a$$ off and he taught me to drive it. I drove almost everywhere out west, and he did all the eastern driving. He payed me $250.00 a week and payed all my expenses. That was great money for a teen back in those days. In 1982 I joined the USMC. This sure brings back lots of wonderful memories. I always missed those days on the road....... Still do.

Yes I have cranked on old truck thats sat for 13 years (was someone's project), a 92 Silverado I bought in Arizona, I bought it for $500, I did the lower intake gasket, rear main seal, Found out it was a 4 bolt 350 with a pretty heavy cam in it (It was hard to get it started at first with that cam), and I swapped out the stock 2 barrel TBI they had on it for some stupid reason for a EFI 4 barrel holly I bought at Summit, I had to end up doing the radiator and water pump, I installed a locker rear end, I drove that truck for 4 years, drove it back to Ohio 2100 miles away in 2019, I recently sold it for $2400, 400,000 miles on the body, but the thing was clean, no rust, paint on the frame. I bought a 99 suburban for $1700 and used the extra money to buy a new front diff and I installed another cheap locker rear diff in it I got from summit, needed rear end bearings anyway. Im 32 and im getting too old for fast stuff like my old loud 92, I wanted comfort, and able to work when I need it, And my Suburban gets better gas milage lol

The Chevy was the Titan The Cummins always draws fuel from the driver side, if you plum it to pull from the passenger side, it may run, but it will be hard to start, and will run very poor. The fuel pump can pull easier from the drivers side. It's the distance that causes the problem And the crossover hose will allow fuel from the passenger side to the drivers side.

I drove a single axle GMC Astro when I starting driving in 1979 and into the 80's. We used to joke that it had the wheelbase of a Volkswagen, they were higher than they were long and if you hit the brakes too hard it would fall on its' face. They were cold in the winter and hot in the summer, the air conditioning was the old 2/60. They were night and day difference from what's on the road now, but oddly enough I miss those days, worked with a good bunch of guys back then, we're almost all gone now.

And 90s, I've always had an interest in auto mechanics and old vehicles from my generation because I always believed that the older vehicles were always the best because the older vehicles were one easier to work on except. It's a bold part and I think that the older relics were better than the computer's nowadays. And I always had interest in the older vehicles and always an interest in wanting to try to fix things and repair them and be my only guy I before. I would like instantly want to just give up on something. I was always the type to never give up and try to fix it before junking it.

I bought a new Astro in 1978 with a 290 Cummins. Then a new one in 1982. With a 300 Cummins. Hauled farm machinery for ringle express then warren transport from 1976 to 1991. Good old days. Great show.

I drove an Astro for about 7 years and put 199,000 miles on it when they retired it and I was pulling a dry box. I was hauling plumbing fixtures with it and always weighed in the neighborhood of 65,000 to 79,000 pounds. Personally, I liked that old truck, I thought it was a cool truck.

In answer to your question. In 1981 Chevrolet made the Titan, and Bison for their Semi Tractors. GMC made the General and the Astro (which was the same as Chevy's Titan. Old Worn former trucker here. Nuff Said.

To check for fuel if you cant find a stick or have problems getting it into the fuel tank. I like to use the oil dipstick to help keep dirt out of the fuel. Some times it can be hard to read but it does the job.

Well they are right in some cases . If you have a vehicle and you get it overheated and you pull the cap off after it cools. If it has pressure it usually means you are pushing compression into the water ports. If a head gasket is blown then it wont build pressure to force air into the radiator
