Truck & Trailer Weight Breakdown: Truck: 2021 Ram 4500 Crew cab, Cummins, 4x4 GVWR: 16,500 lbs GCWR: 37,500 lbs Payload: 7,920 lbs Max Towing: 28,770 lbs GAWR Front: 7,250 lbs GAWR Rear: 12,000 lbs Trailer: Big Tex 22GN 25’+5, 6300 lbs GVWR: 23,900 lbs GAWR: Two 10,000 lbs Rated Dually Axles Trailer Weight: 6,300 lbs Equipment: 2008 John Deere 410J 4x4 Weight: 18,500 lbs Trailer + Equipment: GVWR: 6,300 lbs + 18,500 lbs = 24,800 Breaking down the numbers this load was unfortunately slightly overloaded. The truck is more than capable of the load. However, the trailer falls short. Two issues with this particular load and the trailer. 1) The GVWR of the trailer (23,900 lbs) isn’t high enough for the weight of the trailer and equipment 24,800 lbs, exactly 900 lbs over weight. 2) The trailer is limited by its axles rating. GAWR: 20,000 lbs. Even with 20% pin weight distributed onto the rear of the truck your still over your limit by 900 lbs. One thing trailer manufacturers sometimes do is include the weight distributed onto the truck in the GVWR of the trailer. Example if your axle limit (GAWR) doesn’t add up to the GVWR you know they factored the pin weight into the GVWR. Usually around 20% for goosenecks. In this case GAWR 20,000 lbs + 19.5% = 23,900 lbs which is your GVWR. If the GVWR (23,800lbs) on the trailer was higher say 25,000 lbs, but the GAWR (20,000) was still the same. You could put more weight onto the rear of the truck. Example 20,000 lbs + 25% pin weight would give you the 25,000 lbs you need. However, dependant on the capability of the trucks rear GAWR and the structural weight rating on the goosenecks coupler. In your case it wouldn’t have been legal if possible anyway as your still over your trailers GVWR of 23,900 lbs. Bottom line you guys weren’t grossly over weight like many suggest. The truck and trailer seemed to handle the load fine. On a legal front you were technically 900 lbs overweight. One thing to note is where you got your info with regards to the weight of the equipment, as it seems inflated. Recommend finding the operating weight In the manual like I did, or to look for the weight placard on the machine. Happy hauling and safe travels! Keep up the good content 👍🏼

I loved seeing Andre in this capacity. It really goes to show how far he has come and I love how serious he takes the safety of himself, the crew and the equipment. All too often we see boys that get ahold of large trucks and things, then make an absolute disaster of it by ruining their trailers ruining their trucks and putting a bad example out on the internet for others to mimic. coming from a a person who drives a very similar set up to this, but a 5500 series, and a 40' trailer. i would move the backhoe back a couple more feet, you want the axels of the trailer to take most of the weight, and with where you have the backhoe positioned infront of the axels, you put a lot of strain right in the middle of that trailer, essentially bending it. if you move the backhoe back a couple more feet, it would be ballanced better on the trailer, be less strain on the trailer, and also be less strain on the truck and it wuold be totally legal and balanced. It would also pull a lot better going down the road. Awesome video yall!

Hitch weight counts toward the trailer gross weight. You're still 6,000 over trailer gvwr, even if your axle weights are good. You can use one chain and two binders on each end, with the slack hanging under the machine. It saves that mess at 13:39. Chain the tractor down before setting the buckets down. It makes the chains tighter.

With all that earth to cut and then fill, you will need a 10 ton packer and water truck to get good compaction of your earth to support the foundation. I wait to see the nuke gage to check for compaction. My work experience tells me you need around 95% compaction or more. Here where I live, MOT rules are compaction every 1.5 m or 5 foot lifts.

I would say the backhoe was probably 2' too far forward on the trailer. I would have been interesting to roll it over a scale because I'm pretty sure you were over the trucks rear axle rating by quite a bit. Rule of thumb is the have the center of mass of your machine about a foot forward of the front trailer axle.

The backhoe is still a bit small for that amount of grading. A dozer on tracks with a bucket would be more efficient. It could also drag a sheep's foot over each lift of fill to properly compact the soil. I would try to keep the barn located over the cut and the parking area over the fill to minimize settlement and cracking of the slab. I realize, though, you would probably have to hire and excavation company with an operator, and that may cost as much as letting David operate the backhoe and taking longer to do the job.

If you listen to the video he explains much of this. When you get into 4500 to 6500 the engines are rated different and tuned different than a pickup truck is. Two good reasons are they do not know what the truck will have on the back as the bed is added at the dealership or later and many are used for company trucks and they need to make it harder to break for any idiot that drives it . In another video Andre I think is talking with Mr. Truck and Mr. Truck gives a very good explanation.

A truckie needs to show you guys how to tie down. Chain for the bucket was hooked into a link, the hook should be between the links. And for the side rails the hook should go back up to the chain not hooked on the rail. Eek sorry. Good on you for using ratchet binders and not the lever type.

How long will it take "you" to move all that dirt? What happened to "we"? Keep those fancy new boots nice and clean.

I think Roman likes to try out new things, but knows when to leave it to the pros. Considering they have a schedule to keep to before the barn builders show up.

Nice truck i'd love to drive one of those 4500 or even a 5500 one day and tow a big ass trailer just to see how tough it is to drive it. Do you need a special license to do so ?

Yes only if your towing a trailer that can haul more than 10k but these 5500’s tow awesome i tow heavy equipment everyday with this one and it’s got 40k miles and I’ve never had a problem I’ve hauled a 309 cat excavator that weight 22,000lbs with our goose neck and the exhaust brakes does really well overall it’s awesome

We got two F550s we use for for heavy towing and they are absolute animals for towing, easily handle 35k lbs. Driving them without a load is misery, 4 and 5 series trucks have incredibly stiff suspensions.

What rear gear? 4.44 or 4.88. What speed were you towing.

Pretty sure that's not maxed out. Only if both truck axles and the trailer axles were at their maximum listed ratings would it be maxed out. And no, the GCWR is not something that DOT looks at. That number is for marketing and uses the horsepower of the truck for factoring. DOT doesn't care about horsepower either.
