As a kid, I would do a lap around the house twice every night, make sure every door was locked, and I would touch the wall in certain places as I did it. It was the only way I could fall asleep because my brain automatically went to the worst places: what if the house burns down? what if a burglar tried to come in? I’ve carried a lot of that paranoia into my adult life, constantly feeling claustrophobic and hyper-aware of how I’m being perceived. My mind longs to have control, not only of my surroundings but of myself. I would say this song, along with Lies, are the mission statements of the album: the dark side that comes with being a perfectionist.

The dark side of perfectionism is always something never truly looked at - I often consider Azula from Avatar (I know extreme choice) as an example of it to stop myself from focusing too much on trying to be perfect

@@bethanysmith609 Perfectionism isn't as bad if it is done out of fun but it becomes easily toxic for the person if they are doing it to impress someone else. That's why perfectionists are easily the easiest people to become narcissistic or nihilistic if not looked after because you can either only care for yourself or think that everything is useless so there isn't a point to it.

@@bloodcottoncandy1514 I believe that whilst the dark side to perfectionism is more common and better researched (i.e. those perfectionists that are motivated externally and scared of mistakes), there are some 'healthy' or 'functioning' perfectionists. Those that strive for themselves, don't compare and use mistakes to improve. That's what my psychology dissertation was on and my research supported. Though it's a rather new and disputed theory. As I'm so used to hearing about the negatives of perfectionism (from psychology), I was curious what areas it's not really represented in, which was why I asked for examples :)

@@bethanysmith609 Perfectionism is both good and bad. If perfectionism is fueled by negative factors it can eventually lead to one “fixing” themself by removing unwanted traits, emotions, or cares. Healthy perfectionism is fueled usually by just a want to be better at something, but when it becomes a need to be better then it becomes unhealthy. Most healthy perfectionists can eventually devolve into an unhealthy state. Healthy perfectionism makes it so people can fix mistakes or things bugging them, unhealthy causes great distress and pain.

@@OwlpoAnimations yes! As my comment before said, I looked at this for my dissertation: 'can perfectionist strivings be healthy? The associations between perfectionism, character strength use and flourishing'. My findings supported Stoeber's theory - that there's adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism. However, the dominant view in psychology is that perfectionism is wholly bad! That 'adaptive perfectionism' is not really perfectionism, as striving for 'perfection' and 'excellence' are different. So that's why I asked for examples - wondering if the commenter specifically meant music and media - where the bad sides of perfectionism is 'never truly looked at' ☺️ as psychological research suggests otherwise!

As someone with OCD, I relate! But also, this song sounds much more like someone with OCD than just a perfectionist in some of the lyrics. Like the "check the doors are locked 123 house will burn if I didn't. Make sure that the stove is off, now everything's fine." Like that's an ocd mood lol

My therapist suggested that OCD is probably a lot more common in the population and can overlap with other things. The speech delay he described is typical of autism- but autistic people can also develop OCD and more often than not suffer from anxiety to clinical levels. It also can be a curse as the artist is clearly multitalented but put immense effort in- he is a superb dancer, he clearly has a strong grounding in music composition, he is a great writer and he has strong aesthetic skills. His appearance involves likely intense work, talked about in other songs, to meet impossible beauty standards. So, assuming this is an accurate window (which it doesn't need to be, art is not about us possessing the whole "real" him!), he also has the classic anxiety trap of feeling if he releases his distress he will lapse in capacity.

The disconjointed feel all throughout the song really reflects on how chaotic a percectionist's mind can be, which is pretty ironic. People assume that just because you're a perfectionist, that automatically means thay you have perfect control over yourself as well. But that's the thing, most of the time you have no control over how demanding and obsessive this kind of mindset can be, especially if you let it foster and grow unchecked. It can be so unhealthy especially when you have no coping mechanism for when you feel like your sense of control is suddenly taken away. Ugh, the anxiety about that is awful

This song was everything I needed to hear after everything I’ve went through last night. I was crying so hard because nobody understood me well when it comes to my emotions and OCD, and people complained that I need “control” So when I heard this, I’d felt relieved because I’d didn’t feel so alone anymore because I’m not alone in this struggle. Thank you for this incredible, it honestly calmed me down to finally sleep.

I seriously relate about being so calculated with words and wanting to control your environment to the level of needing other people to disappear. Being so much of a perfectionist in everything including your own personality and appearance and the anxiety and need of control that comes with it is practically my entire life.

I'm an autistic person and this song HEAVILY resonates with me. I also get worried about how I speak, have weird rituals I need to do to help feel control of my life. I was mute for an entire year in preschool then suddenly started talking just fine so everyone decided nothing was wrong with me. I have intense agoraphobia and if I'm social for too long it takes days for me to recover and be able to try it again. I'm paranoid about how I'll affect others and I often say things that are unsettling because I have a hard time understanding how other (non autistic) people think or feel and tend not to have a "brain to mouth filter". Also perfectionism is a super big autistic thing. We are our own biggest hypocrites and we will hyperfixate on the tiniest of errors or inconsistencies, it can be debilitating. If you haven't been tested for autism I really recommend looking into it, because of the stigma a lot of people don't know what "mild" autism really looks like and would rather go undiagnosed and thus unhelped. There's a lot of us out there, just trying to look normal. Just trying to get by. Also ABA is bad. It literally causes PTSD in autistic kids, don't use it.
