One thing Keane is ignoring is that United during his career were often winning leagues with points totals in the mid 70s to mid 80s. Liverpool came 2nd with 92 points and 97, it's a lot harder to win titles when you have to run near perfect and are competing with a team that can outspend you.

@@olegvartanov5906 But you have to compare teams and managers that have the same means and money to win trophies. Not only Man City is dimensions above Liverpool financially, but they are not in a better position than Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United. You cannot compare the outcome without considering the financoal input in salaries and signing fees and much more. Klopp improve his situation in monetary ways by success. Their games have been so exciting and beautiful to watch. Whenever they had the ball they looked like they're about to score. Also, Anfield is a freaking tapestry of football. Fans go berzerk when the team is playing great football - it was a firepit in that Barcelona comeback. I can't imagine people who watched Liverpool for the past 5-6 years will forget it, but to be remembered as a great team decades later you need more "on-paper" stats than a ucl and an epl trophy. Last year, they were so close to immortality - missed the quadruple by 1 point in epl and ucl final loss. It's a shame that they were undone so much by Real Madrid in Champions League who were never having a great season. RM's first half of the season is like pre-season by recent Man City and Liverpool standards. Meanwhile you switch of for a few weeks in England and you find yourself struggling for uel qualification. Oh well, nobody cares about context in football history. I mean how many great teams do we know from the past anyway? Sacchi's Milan, Man Utd 99', Guardiola's Barcelona, Zidane's Real Madrid, the Invincibles? I don't see Liverpool's name next to these teams. I guess when you play the game of football heritage, you win or you die.

Liverpool have won every club trophy and got 90+ points on several occasions. Them and MC have raised the bar so high, until this season obviously. I have watched the Liverpool teams of the 80s who won everything, but they never hit the heights this Klopp era team did. And we were 10th when he came in and needed a total rebuild. @@Bingobanana4789 The level of football these two teams have been playing has been mind blowing, if you can't admit that then it can only be tribalism. Liverpool won 30/38 games in 19/20, they dropped 2 points at home all season that season, even after this poor season they haven't lost a home league game with fans there since 2017. I watched Liverpool dominate for about 15 years and only the Dalglish side of 87/88 came close to this level at their best under Klopp. MC have bought their success but you can't say they won't go down as one of the best ever PL sides. KDB, Aguero, Kompany and no doubt Haaland belong in any era, as do Mane, Firmino, Salah. These two are the best two sides I've ever seen, the Arsenal invincibles with Henry up there too but the pace of the game now is incredible, these players are like machines. There are no easy games in the PL so to keep getting 90+ points for a run of years was something to be recognised, I mean Liverpool got 97 points and didn't win the league! That is the standard these two have set.

Liverpool were pushed to these numbers because they had no choice as Man City were getting those numbers. Imo both Man City and Liverpool are not great teams. The only genuine great teams over the last 30 years is R Madrid, Man Utd, Barcelona, Bayern Munich. Winning UCL and EPL in the same season multiple times. This team reached 3 champions league finals, amassed 99, 97 and 92 points in 3 seasons, won FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup, World Club Championship. If it’s not great it’s pretty damn impressive. The 2 years they amassed over 90 points and did’t win the title the gap to 3rd place was 18 and 25 points. I think greatness is judged long after and what Klopp has achieved starting with an average team is pretty impressive. All that maybe prevents greatness is the number of near misses and Man City being exceptional. Not to mention Real Madrid being a bit of a thorn. Great teams still don’t get everything their way, do they. To give an example of what I meant, that 2018/19 Man City team won everything except the Champions League (losing to Spurs on away goals in an amazing game) and kept a great CL-winning Liverpool team with 97 points from the title. I liken the City/Liverpool era to the Liverpool/Forest era of the late 70s and early 80s. Can't be classed as a great team? Madness. Over the period this Liverpool has turned up and turned out. Look at these achievements: 1 PL (99 pts) - yes 1, but was up against a great city side and lost twice by 1 pt. These races were great and went down to the last day and could've gone either way. Pts total of 97 & 92. Great advert for the Prem. Those races will be remembered. All great title races are. 1 CL - But made 3 CL finals and 1 EL final. The only english team challenging the spanish dominance. 1 Super Cup, Club World Cup, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield. Lets talk about style of play and entertainment. What City and Pool has done during this time has been outstanding. This was a team that lost the quadruple dream on the last day of league by a pt. No team has ever come so close. Sometimes the journey matters as much as the destination. This Liverpool team made a stop at every destination required aong its journey. Something City hasn't yet. So, if City can be considered great, then surely Liverpool can be too.

They had seasons where they went on wobblies which cost them big time & at times they were inconsistent. Klopp’s a great manager & he needs backing from their owners, but at the same time he’s showing faith too much faith in players past their best. Salah, Henderson, Van Dijk (to an extent), Fabinho & Thiago. They should’ve cashed in on Salah when they had the chance and clubs were offering the big bucks for him. They also went unbeaten at home for 2 years over this period. Just because they didn't get over the line you can't deny that it wasn't a great team. But they don't quite get in the "all time" greats because they didn't get over the line. (the 3 90+ seasons would have got them the win almost every other EPL year don't forget) The team is in transition this year (and there are a number of reasons for that, but the over arching is simply exhaustion - which a number of teams are suffering with this year). But i have no doubt they'll be back fighting on all fronts next year. I don't think Liverpool's era is over. They've still got some world class players and some top talent.

Remember when everyone was talking about a Klopp and Liverpool dynasty incoming when they were playing like they did for those 2-3 seasons, steamrolling everyone week in week out. No doubt having Man City about and being just as good or even better stopped that Liverpool team from winning back to back titles and a CL in the same season as the PL. On their day they could probably beat most of the truly great club sides in history, just a shame for them it was a relatively short lived thing. Can't see Klopp building another 100 point a season side. That was partly Klopp but also that bit of magic that Mane, Firminho and Salah had that nobody can predict. @@trekunda true. But if that ball crossed the line at the Etihad this would be a completely different conversation. You need luck sometimes and it was against them then. Centimetres from an invincible 98 points and UCL winners. They were better that season than they were in 19/20 in my opinion. The moral of the story is this City team are outrageous to have stopped that Liverpool team winning the league that year. Taking nothing from them. Two great teams in their prime against each other. There's no doubt they'll be remembered as a great team. I've said it before, they were brilliant, they just peaked at the worst possible time. That is, when the best team the league has ever seen were also at their best. They finished second twice with 90+ points, which had never happened in top flight history. My dad's generation says the Leeds team in the 70s were a great team. They finished second a lot, never won anything in Europe. Still remembered as a great team. Klopp's Liverpool team were excellent, there's no debate whatsoever. To measure them by trophy haul alone is what you do when you want to undermine them.

Keane is not objective when it comes to Liverpool. I'm a Liverpool supporter, but I have to admit that (for a variety of reasons) Klopp's team may just fall short of 'great team' status. One was the relatively lower spending by FSG. Klopp's game plan could be all or nothing at times. Their luck in finals swung one way and then the other. There were too many injuries and the squad was rarely at close to full strength. Confidence could fall too easily at times and tactics on the field had to mostly be sorted out at half time and not during the first half. These are relevant, despite all the strengths of the manager and players.
@habatone
@habatone Жыл бұрын
@@CaminoAir I respectfully disagree. Forget all if that, and just look at cold hard data. Good teams win, at the very least, football games. Liverpool won a lot under klopp in that 3 year spell where they got 97, and 99 points respectively. Plus a cl trophy. That's a great achievement, which mediocre teams cannot do. Yes you're right, Keane cannot be objective when talking about Liverpool. I'd go one further, I don't think he can be objective about much at all. Almost everything he says is loaded with bias and emotion. Legendary footballer he is, well balanced methodical thinker, he is not

Last season we messed up big, klopp is kind of man he’ll fight throughout all season but when it comes to those defining games we lose. Every year its a same story in PL we dropped points to lower teams which cost us PL and still the race was on till last day. We should have won that UCL final against madrid. Just like cara said at least one more big trophy. This liverpool team or board or committee they have made the biggest mistake last year. They should have signed so players last year. Specially a defender and a midfielder. Now this team falling apart. Few years ago spurs were great, but for 2 half years they not freshen their squad and they dropped mid table and struggling, we are in the same position, we are lucky that we got the best manager but i like man city strategy if you wanna stay on top or win more you must rotate your squad, you must bring 1 to 3 players a season. Game wise, struggle wise we were damn great, probably one of the biggest in the history of this game how we coped to stay on top with average and injury prone players. Hendo, ox, thiago, keita, diaz, konate, elliot, matip, gomez, jones. 2nldy mane was a franchise player at liverpool man used to play 40+ games consistently you don’t lose player like that. So we weren’t great team.

Are these guys seriously going to ignore that one of the reasons why Liverpool don’t have more league titles under klopp. Is due to Man City having more money than god and breaking every financial rule under the sun. Also the fact that klopps Liverpool have won every possible trophy there is to win and for that team not to be considered great is something I seriously don’t agree with. Not saying they’re the greatest team ever but they’ve earned that respect. And yes I am a Liverpool fan by saying this and I’ll probably get slagged for this. They are a great team, but because City are better in the league due to squad depth, they won't be remembered as such. To lose out over a 38 game season by a single point means you're almost as good as the winner, and if they're classified as 'great', then so is the runner up, especially if the runner up has surpassed the points total of previous 'greats' when they won the league. However, years down the line, only the winners will be remembered.
