Will Lewis Hamilton's Driving Style Work With Ferraris 2025 F1 Car
Ferrari's renowned for producing cars with a tendency towards oversteer, which could significantly impact Hamilton's driving style known for its precision and control. Moreover, the positioning of the cockpit closer to the front axle alters the car's balance, potentially making it less predictable for a driver accustomed to a different setup.
We explore how these factors might influence Hamilton's performance on the track and discuss whether his adaptable driving skills can overcome these engineering nuances. Don't miss out on this insightful analysis of the intersection between driver technique and car dynamics in Formula 1.

Lewis himself said he likes a lively rear end. As long as he can feel it. He likes a car that can turn in and he can predict the aggression of the rear. NOT a non-dramatic rear as most people think.

If they’re changing the suspension layouts to front pullrod and rear pushrod in ‘25 it might take Lewis and Charles several races to get up to speed, because the front end will be heavier at first due to having to make sure it’s strong enough to pass the crash tests.

It might take Leclerc a little bit to adjust but Lewis is already used to it, Mercedes uses that suspension already. It also sounds like Newey will be building cars for Ferrari and we know that is the preferred suspension for him. Charles will benefit greatly with Lewis being his teammate. BTW... Love your content F1 Jesus!!!

Wouldn’t a rear suspension layout change also potentially affect the cockpit position? Depending on how they position the gearbox as well, obviously. Knowing Lewis’ preference, that might be something Ferrari are working on for the SF-25.
@sh-spectrum409
@sh-spectrum409 23 күн бұрын
@@emp.splash Changing the rear suspension layout to pushrod would certainly help push more air towards the diffuser which is why Red Bull has had it from the start. RBR also has their cockpit closer to the rear axle as well so there is definitely a chance.🤞🏻

@joshd171294 23 күн бұрын
Generally oversteer really hasn’t been an issue for him in the past. 2012 for example he drove that car right on the nose. It was the unpredictable snap oversteer in high speed corners that bothered both Merc drivers with these ground effect cars. Agree that the qualifying issues this year are definitely tyre related but more tyre temperature issues as opposed to deg.

I hear that. Tbh I think the ground effect cars have come less naturally for all of the older drivers. Drivers become less malleable as they age which I think is the main reason why they decline rather than losing reaction time. The Pirelli’s being the way they are doesn’t help either

Dunno, this idea of Lewis not liking a pointy car came out after that magazine article. But isn't it just a case that he has had to make the car less pointy because it is so bad? His ex teammates, Nico, Jenson, say he likes car that is pointy. Lewis himself said that he always set up his car to be as point as possible (in his old interview with Martin). I think the the confusion is that Lewis is not that he needs s stable rear end but more that he needs a car that is predictable on the rear end and he can feel what its doing. Ultimately, if the car is slow and he has to man handle it too much its always going to be bad
@F1Unchained
@F1Unchained 22 күн бұрын
It’s mainly because that’s what he use to prefer and the more nimble cars suited him with more front end. As the cars have gone up on weight so has preference on rear end
@manasatatikonda
@manasatatikonda 20 күн бұрын
That's true, I too reads like he likes understeer but prefers front-end pointy cars. but since 2022 cars gained so much weight. Pointy front-end cars always depend on weight, which makes it so tough for late braking at corners. this is exactly what Lewis struggled with since 2022, especially in street & low-corner circuits.
@noomade
@noomade 20 күн бұрын
@@manasatatikonda ... this is still contradictory. If you are a late braker you need the front to point to get the car turned. But, with increased weight, you need to more and more "stability" with the rear end... meaning you need to know exactly what is going on with the rear end because you are trying to turn the car in late and shorten the corner. Late braking with an understeering car results in you being quick in and slow out... which is not what Lewis likes. Lewis is a short corner driver. He is late on brakes and early on the throttle. You want a pointy car for this, but if you can't predict or feel the back moving, it won't work. So maybe it is more of a case of Lewis dialling in understeer because the back of the car is so unpredictable. 🤷

Both Hamilton and Leclerc loves a oversteery car than an understeery one so that means Ferrari can push their car development and philosophy in one direction as they now have a driver pairing that shares similar preferences instead of the one they have now with Sainz preferring an understeery setup to Leclerc's oversteery setup.

Lewis 100% likes a pointy car, not an understeering car. It's why he was so different to Jenson when they were teammates. The issue with the Merc this year was it wouldn't turn in at low speed (understeer), which he hated, so you had to make it REALLY overtsteery in high speed - because you lose so much more time in a slow corner. The issues Max had in Spain were due to a car that oversteered too much, and he lows oversteer. Even the best have limits. Lewis definitely sets a car up with more oversteer then most on the grid.

I always felt like one of the main weaknesses of Ferrari was trying to cater to both Sainz and Leclerc with complete opposite driving styles. I feel like they'd have a stronger package if they took the Red Bull route and prioritized one style over the next. The 2022 car was very strong relative to the field because of it's front end. They neutralized the front bias in 23' and boom the car is slower in relativity.

Weirdly, Lewis has always liked the car being on the nose (oversteer) in the same way Michael did. Brundle actually made mention of this to Lewis in an interview to which he agreed and also elaborated to say "I probably drove with too much oversteer early in my career" so I don't really see oversteer as being a negative. I actually think he and Charles would both prefer that to allow more rotation. I think they will both want similar things from the car which will be a net positive for Ferrari as I believe Carlos prefers a strong rear and more understeer which is the complete opposite of Charles. Wouldn't mind a similar video regarding Piastri/Norris. Love your content

You are right to some extent, but it doesn't excuse the length and extent of bad performance he puts up. Right now, Red Bull is not a clear favourite anymore, but Perez's troubles started way before, and it isn't just the top contender teams that give him a hard time. He constantly makes huge driver mistakes and drops out before Q3 in quali / compromises his race. On one hand, you're right and Perez being ahead of Verstappen early '23 was an overperformance in a car not best suited to him. On the other hand, not being able to contest other top teams when the car isn't half a second a lap faster (when driven by Verstappen) is quite a bad look.

There’s 20 of the best racing drivers on a formula 1 grid and only 10 teams. Not everyone can have a cad that perfectly fits their style, Lewis has driven cars he hates and still managed to get good results. So have other drivers like max and Charles. That’s what separates good drivers from great drivers. It’s not anyone else’s fault Perez can’t adapt as well as others. It’s a cut throat business so if you can’t adapt then move on… there’s no point tailoring the car to perezes style because he would still be significantly slower than max. He isn’t saying Lewis didn’t good in qualifying. He’s amazing, but he is stronger in race pace than he is qualifying. Hence why he has so many wins not starting from pole. Vettel on the other hand, amazing qualifier, but never won a race starting outside the top 3

I believe all of these drivers when they start out prefer an oversteer car. Its a natural feel that they developed from karting. But as they mature and understand the value of race pace and how important it is to keep the tires alive, they transition to a more understeer style. You can see old footage of Lewis really whippin the tail around corners.

Love the content. I think '25 for LH is once again a "test" year for him ... getting to know the Ferrari car and team. He is not a slouch so he will not be at the back of the pack, but I thing hovering around 5 - 8 place with perhaps an occasional podium. I think '26 is the big year where he will have had input on the car and the fact that GRUNT is going to be favored over ground effect, LH driving style will be best suited. If he does not get his 8th title in '26, his chances in '27 are slim. I think in '28 he will be out on his other projects - acting being the most favored IMO - but he has many other interests and projects. I am more interested in the teeam dynamic that is looming. CLC has "had it his way" since #5 left. Do you really think #44 will play 2nd fiddle ? I am not so convinced and if #44 gets lead, will CLC stick around ?

Very thorough video, but I thought Lewis liked his cockpit further forward to brake late? The problem was Mercedes lacked rear end stability, when he moved his cockpit forward it upset the car's balance?

Really one of your most interesting episodes because this is a topic that many of us are already thinking about, so voila! here it is. I suppose since most teams will be planning next year as much as possible now, so that they can get onto 2026 as early as possible next year, I think it's hard to predict any conclusive answer since they haven't figured this car out and let's face it, they are regressing. We know this is an historic problem with them that we thought they had figured out in Japan last year...so maybe there is hope that they get it together. It seems to be floating in various states of compromises and we see the result of that.

The 677 project is for the 2025 Ferrari to make it suitable for Lewis to drive. It will have a pull-rod Front and Rear Suspension the driver position will be moved rearward to give Lewis more feel on the rear. I think Charles will have to adjust his driving style for a car designed for Lewis.

How Hamilton adapts to the Ferrari is the most interesting storyline of 2025. Changing teams & cars has been disastrous for some drivers. Danny Ric was on it at Red Bull & Renault but the McLaren didn't work for him at all

I'll be curious to see because Ferrari Drivers, at least since 2012, have had to use more steering lock than other teams during cornering. Hamilton's current set up at Mercedes shows him to have very positive and quick steering. So it'll be interesting to see if he carries that over or they adapt to him or he adapts to it.

I hope Ferrari doesn't get stuck in the trap of developing the car to suit the driver. I think they have a lot more problems in house with development fall off through out the year. I thought they made a good step this year on tires but through the season they are lagging yet again. Its understandable with the competition but it will only be tougher next year. Hopefully they can get their logistics right. They have the technical expertise and never really had bad drivers. so its all there if they get everything aligned.

Charles is one of the fastest there is, but I’d still put my money on Lewis over the year. He’ll just make better calls, won’t buy into Ferrari’s daft strategy calls, and mostly cause he knows how to put together a decent season and hoover up points instead of going all in. As a fan of both I’m really looking forward to it, although I wish he’d finish his career at Mercedes
