Will Menaker appears on Struggle Session to discuss Alan Moore's 1999 graphic novel "From Hell" and its thoroughly mediocre and forgettable 2001 movie adaptation. In the process, they discuss Alan Moore's notion that the Jack the Ripper murders were the birth pangs of the 20th century, the imposing architecture and malevolent vibes of East London, and whether or not the ripper murderers represent the first ever true crime sensation.

He's not the only person talking about this stuff. It's just that most of the people talking about it aren't so famous in the mainstream. I mean, he was portrayed in The Simpsons.

In the book, yeah. It's not stated directly that it's her, but when Gull's spirit goes a-wandering it finds her in Ireland and, apparently able to see Gull's disembodied spirit-head (or something), she tells him to go to hell. She's got kids n all. It's obviously her. Gull massaced her poor little French girlfriend thinking she was Kelly. IRL, not so fortunate.

Once you read they all love Jack, from hell becomes incredibly uninteresting, and the line about birthing the 20th century trite - the crimes were of a piece with 19th century imperial violence

The two can coexist. Robinson’s book came out 20 plus years after From Hell and working off many theories. From Hell is much more interested in metaphysics

@@12Daniel34 exactly and everyone knows the point of an artsy graphic novel with a premise like "Jack the Ripper prefigured the 20th century using time magic" is to be a literal work of non-fiction Ripperology research

Interesting discussion about an interesting comic book - it's a pity that the word "like" punctuates almost every sentence here, and rarely ever is it used correctly (ie, no comparison is being made). In fact like every single like one could be like removed because they don't like serve any like purpose.
