You’re right about the kids. My 10 year old exclusively plays Roblox on her phone and iPad. She has no interest in anything else. I have all the consoles and tried to introduce her to them, to no success. She always returns to her phone/iPad.

Spot on about the youths. For their next console Nintendo need to make sure that Fortnite, Apex, Warzone, FIFA, Genshin etc. run great on it. And they really need to focus their presentation on these games and emphasize that "Switch 2" is the best place to play them. Sell it in a bundle with some free V-Bucks, FC Coins and whatever too. As much as we love our Xenoblades, Final Fantasies and Zeldas, kids don't give shit about them, it's old people entertainment.

My personal theory is that Nintendo is going to try to use the new system to bring back asymmetrical gaming. This way, they can resell some of the DS, 3DS, and WiiU games that we no longer have access to.

I think you made several fair points. Also, it’s not like you’re going out on a limb by saying it’ll sell less. The Switch will probably go down as the best selling system of all time. You just don’t come out with a successor and surpass that right away. Now, as far as the novelty point you made, that’s fair but it will still be the only hybrid on the market by release time. I barely play portable, only when I want to slightly further progress a game I’ll play while commuting to work. The other options don’t do this seamlessly. What it will boil down to will be the games. 3rd party support will be even better this time around for those developers that feel they missed out on the switch. Now I def do not think it will surpass the switch but I believe it will sell over 100 mil.

Yes. Switch will break PS2’s all time console sales record shortly after the Switch 2’s launch and the steep discounts for OG switch and switch lite. This sales record, will provide FREE MARKETING, for the successor, and will also cement the biggest install base. Nintendo won the console wars in the long run. By combining their handheld and console markets into 1 market, and never failing to maintain vastly superior 1st party software.

I think I generally agree with your views here. Even if the Switch 2 has some new novelty features (which I'm not expecting), I can't see it overtaking the original. I do wonder what their next novelty system will be in a decade or so. I'm currently betting it'll be a comparatively affordable VR thing, but that's probably just because I lack imagination.

My nephiew, 5yo, simply won't leave his mom's phone. I had my Nintendo Switch and PS5 plugged to the TV, and he would definitely play with me if I asked him, but he is just not interested in trying to play on his own. It seems to me that consoles and PCs have become a thing for teens and up, kids are totally ok with their phones.

If the next Switch is backwards compatible (which at this point is all but confirmed) , then the question isn't whether the Switch 2 will be the Switch 1; the question will be if the console industry will be able to beat Nintendo (not counting Steam; they above all this). The Switch 2 will at least be on the market for another 10 years (like the current Switch will be) and clearly get some updated models (OLED, Lite, ect) so in that entire lifespan; it most certainly will hit those numbers. Also take into account that Microsoft will more than likely become the subscription and cloud based company they always wanted to be in teh gaming space and Sony will be in the middle; in deciding if they will go the route of microsoft or stay the course (which is continue to make home only consoles). They might make their own hybrid in the next 10 years; but are not in a good position to do so at the momement; since the neck deep in their plans which started with more than half way of the production of PS5. Also; if they wanted, the could easily just consider the Switch 2 to be part of the "Switch Family of Systems" to which no one will care if it sells more than Switch 1. At this point Nintendo will just continue on course.

I know I’m alone in this, but for Smash and Mario Kart I would rather have new ports with even more content and better QoF than actual sequels. Those games are so good I legit believe they could still be “relevant” for 6 more years as long as they keep adding content to them.

Another point: I do agree that the novelty of the hybrid nature has worn off now. Remember when Doom 2016 and Witcher 3 were ported in Switch? Those were miracles! However, like the D-Pad, the hybrid nature is a functionality that’s probably here to stay. Unlike the heavy reliance on motion controls, dual screens and 3D depth perspective. Heck, even VR hasn’t really lasted (though the jury is still out on that one). So if Nintendo still uses hybrid consoles, they will always keep an appeal that’s very useful for people, and that doesn’t hinder gameplay too much.

Yeah, Nintendo saw the success of the Switch and they decided that for the successor they should adopt a "if it ain't broke" approach to it. While it might do really well during its first years after its release with moblie gaming becoming bigger and better the only thing that I feel Nintendo MIGHT (and I would be surprised if they'd do tbh) do after the next hybrid console becomes 3-4 years old is that they might end up testing the waters with the PC market by putting some of their new(ish) games on Steam. If Kingdom Hearts' sales on Steam showed us anything its that Nintendo is missing out on some decent cash by not putting at least some of their lesser known games/not so big IP's on PC/Steam.

My belief is that it’ll sell very well, but not OG Switch. It could however surpass the 100mil mark over time, if Nintendo continues to play its cards right. The key is to offer many high quality exclusives (Nintendo must capitalise on as many IPs of theirs as possible), excellent marketing, and a high grade 3rd party AAA and indie offering. They themselves said that the transition to the next system is a main focus of theirs, which is a good thing. I believe the smartest way to do that is to go down the route like PlayStation (cross-gen for a while), BUT you need to start making exclusive games for your next system within a smaller span of time after release than what Sony has done.

I think there were also other factors that hindered past transitions but i definitely agree Switch will remain on top. Maybe Switch successor can break all conventions for nintendo but it is an uphil battle since they'll have a harder time convincing those who bought switch on a whim to convert. That said I do think it will have the highest retention for nintendo from any previous gen. That's always been their weakness so if they focus on keeping as many players they can, then the system afterwards can possible succeed even more. Hopefully the successor doesn't sink as low as 3ds and at best similarly to the ps5 trailing the ps4, it's just behind the switch. I have my hopes as high as being the best selling beside the big 3 which would be incredible for nintendo

If the new console doesn't sell as much of the switch, i won't be upset, as long as it isn't the wii to wii u situation. The switch was just a good idea at the right time, im sure the pandemic helped the sales a little. I love the switch mostly for the games then the idea even though being portable is great so as long as thebnew system has amazing games I think it will be fine

I don't think so. The main new thing only works once. A decent amount of switch success came from people being lock in by their government. To me it would take backwards compatibility and way better hardware to even be considered.

@YoVideoGames ❤You're right in the likely result being Nintendo's Next-Gen system will sale less than current-gen Switch; but you're wrong in your logic... all Nintendo's previous Hardware has never had all of their video game development resources focused on a single platform, not to mention that Nintendo is also investing in their own development Studios to grow in their development resources create even more games! Plus you are assuming, which we kind of all are, that the Next Generation system from Nintendo will be just a next iteration and more beefed up power of the Nintendo switch. With all that being said, all of Nintendo's development resources and potentially another Innovation to go along with their next system; could very well be just as successful as the Nintendo switch success is, but yeah likely not.

I really can’t think of how one could innovate the design of the switch other than a stronger Switch with better internals. I think it’s less about Novelty and more about people wanting a portable gaming system, and the only novelty of the switch is its detachable joysticks. But I don’t think Nintendo’s aim was making the detachable joysticks as the selling point but rather, a system that could run home console games on the go. I kinda guess that was their intent because if it wasn’t, they wouldn’t sell the Switch Lite. Nintendo also has brand power, where some people would simply buy because they recognize the brand. And these are most likely to be nongamers and people who just started. I could go ask around the city and many people are more likely to name Nintendo or SEGA game. However, Nintendo does have some serious competition with the rise of portable PC game systems like the Steam deck. In addition to be able to sync your Steam library, these systems are more moddable and able to run emulators. And that’s probably an unintentional selling point of these new portable pc games.

Ps5 is just a ps4 pro pro, ps5 failed to push gamers to buy the console year 1 cuz of scalpers and lack of a killer game. Switch had zelda and mario (both goty nominees) pushed gamers to buy the switch which pushed devs to port games to switch which also push casuals to buy switch. Switch 2 just needs to solve the scalper problem (and price probably) and at bare minimum 2 killer game in the first year.

While i agree with the point, i think the reasons are a bit off. The deck and the etc are simply not competing for the same market as the switch, what they offer is not as appealing overall to the non "gamer" consumer A lot of the discussion around the switch sucess is blinded by the same mentality that always forgets about DFO (and others) when talking about the highest grossing games in the world, it's a product that targets this huge blindspot I would say that mobile is the real switch competitor. And nintendo always acted as if, nowdays most of their efforts are around the cultural relevance of their IPs(and that's how they compete with mobile), the mario movie being an example, i genuelly believe that disney is now more of a rivel to nintendo than microsoft. So yeah, i think simmons is right overall, but not on those specifc points.

I 100% agree. From my own activity with the original Switch I played Mario Odyssey, Smash and Metroid Dread - that's about it. I have zero reason to get a Switch 2. This isn't even taking into consideration that I truly believe the Switch 2 won't even push the envelope that much on the hardware standpoint where people would rather use that money to buy a Steam Deck or one of the handfuls of other PC handhelds.

Even if it doesn’t, if there is a jump in quality like there was from the NES to SNES, then I’m totally fine. I know sales numbers mean some more to companies, doe. I thought one of the reasons would be because of Co-Vid and lockdown (which was totally necessary) because I saw HELLA people buy one who AREN’T people who game. At least as far as I know. I love my switch. Play the fucking thing all the time. For me, it’s like…the all around gaming machine. At least, that’s what I’m trying to turn mine into.

I agree with nearly all of your points. However, I think the switch being both a portable console and a home council was one of the smartest things to ever happen to video games. I don’t see how, or even the need, to invent another gimmick that beats portable console. The smartest thing they can do is make a 4K 60 Switch.

Great points but I don’t agree with portability being a novelty. Having a portable and a home console in one is still a big deal whether you are someone who plays in portable mode or travels alot. You couple that with the fact that Switch 2 will seemingly close the gap hardware power-wise, with all 3rd party support on par with Sony (MS screwed the pooch with 3rd party like MVC2), hell I bought inferior versions of third party games on Switch solely because of the portability factor. You throw in Nintendo just sitting on AAA games with the largest employee and studio count they have ever had, having gained casuals they have never had with the original Switch, this thing is going to be a BANGER. Phone gaming is actually the novelty that has worn off. We have never seen Nintendo with as powerful hardware as the competition which is precisely the novelty that will hook Switch 1 users if all other features don’t. On top of all that, Furakawa is smart. He will do things and make offers to current Switch owners that will get them to buy Switch 2 (an NSO discount, exclusive content for the big bangers, etc). This will surpass the Switch. Mark my words. Edit: just want to add 1 thing. Why do you think Nintendo is releasing new, AAA IP games so close to the Switch 2 release? Its because they have SO MANY big hitters coming, they can afford to just release these games when any other company would hold onto them for next gen. This is going to be an amazing time in Nintendo history.
