You guys do realize that Ovi comes from Olympic stock, right? He's a natural athlete, built as sturdy as they come and, despite all the haters, hasn't slowed down an inch. 😅

Said before and I’ll say it again. He won’t catch 99. Don’t hate the guy just crunching the numbers. Goals to catch 99 and his age doesn’t = the goals required.

it would be awesome to witness that if it could happen but hes 39 years old and this season is his worst start ever. ovie is one of the best shooters to ever lace up the skates but everything comes to an end eventually and he looks labored more now than ever. sorry guys, he just can't do it.

No, he won't. I'm still baffled as to how anyone actually thought he would. With his style of play through all those years, how could anyone not expect this guy to fall off a cliff? Add to that, that Washington is a bottom feeder which is over performing right now, and the true reality, is much worse than it even appears.

When Gretzky retired I thought out of his major records, career goals is the one record I might see broken one day. I didn't think Ovechkin had a chance though, until last year. He had still been consistently putting up big numbers and I thought maybe standing in one spot and just pounding pucks on net will get the job done for him. He had been aging well in terms of goal production so far, and since he wasn't relying on speed, maybe he could actually break the record. But this year he is showing his age, and it's looking less and less likely. I think if he goes without a goal next game his career goals per game will drop below Gretzky's career total.

I'm not a Gretzky fan..but Gretzky was a better hockey player than Ovechkin....Ovechkin wouldn't have the points if he played in Gretzky era with all the clutching and grabbing wacking the stick out of your hand. it war brutal back then LOL...IMHO

All the clutching and grabbing? Son, Ovechkin is a horse on skates, and the men Gretzky played with were half as good as NHLers today. Ovie would have cut through those teams like a hot knife through butter. He'd have MORE goals, not fewer.

@@matthewsimonds3346 I don't want to speak for the person you are responding to, but for me I don't want the record to be broken because it's special to me how Gretzky has all the major records. Most goals in a season, most goals in a career, most goals in a playoff career, most assists in a season/career/playoffs, etc. Having one guy specialize and break one of the records just breaks up the great story that Gretzky's records tell. It's probably a petty reason, but it's how I feel. I totally understand why most people would be excited to see the record broken, but not me. That being said, if some new player came into the league and started scoring 90+ goals in a season, 200+ points, wins more than 10 scoring titles, etc, that would be very, very exciting and I would be cheering them on to break Gretzky's records.

@@kentmartin9289WTF are you talking about? For that to happen you would need to bring back the garbage goalies from the 1980s. Howe’s 801 goals are more impressive than the 894 from Gretzky. Howe scored his goals in much lower scoring eras while Gretzky had cardboard cutouts masquerading as goalies to shoot at in the 1980s.
