I mean, he does have a problem that the martyrdom accounts of the Disciples are... Not well attested to? Like, most of them are from apocryphal books that Christians believe are not true, so selecting only to believe singular snippets of those books feels like cherry picking. So, like, he's basing his reason to believe they saw something on books he doesn't believe reflect true events. That's kinda suspect to me.

@@fuego2263 I mean, if you go to your Bible, or your history books, you'll find most of the disciples kind of vanish from recorded history shortly after the Crucifixion. Most of the stories that attest to their martyrdoms are books that did not make it into the Bible because it was, effectively, decided the claims in them were not true (which makes sense, a lot of the claims in them are pretty wild, they read almost more like Bible fanfiction than anything. Like Jesus having a *twin* brother, or that there was a giant talking cross, or of an army being destroyed by a man crossing himself, all sorts of nutty things). If you want a quick list of them you can go to Wikipedia's page on New Testament apocrypha. So, to me, it's weird that people accept the stories of the Disciples martyrdoms as being true from these texts when they don't accept any other part of these texts as being true.

The disciples of Jesus died for what they knew with a 100% certainty, without a shadow of a doubt, to be either true or a lie. According to the psychology, it's impossible to willingly die for what you know to be a lie. So it's clear that the disciples believed with all of their being in the risen Christ. It therefore makes perfect sense to take their word for it since they were a trustworthy source. They literally walked with Jesus and knew him personally. So they were totally unique to all other martyrs ever from all other religions, since they were eyewitnesses and were in a position to actually know(not just believe) the truth about their own claims. This does not apply to any muslim martyrs ever or any later Christian martyrs or any martyrs from any religion ever.

We don't... Have their word for it? There is not a single document, I'm aware of, of the last testament of a disciple saying that they are going to the grave in the name of what they believe. We don't even have accounts of most of their deaths. In fact, most of the recorded deaths of the Apostles come from apocryphal works that were not accepted as true parts of the Bible. So, not only do spies and other people willingly die for lies all the time, but also you don't actually have the evidence you claim you have, so it doesn't seem like you have any foundation for the belief you're claiming.

the argument falls apart slightly when we take into account that the four gospels of the new testament were written between 20 and 100 years after jesus of nazareth was killed, by mostly anonymous authors. so, if you believe those authors, most of which never saw or spoke to jesus, then it’s infallible. but if you believe, as most people do, that word of mouth is an imperfect medium for transmitting information (see: any game of chinese whispers), the evidence doesn’t stand so strongly anymore.

Yeah, Peter and Paul were recorded to be able to perform miracles, so that's also one of the reasons they were willing to die for Christ. They are Jews who grew up knowing that performing miracles can only be attributed to prophets and Gods, so being able to perform those miracles and healings in the name of Jesus made them a hundred percent certain that who and what they are believing is true.

Muslims do the same thing, and so do Buddhists. A lot of people have died for various religions with many claiming to have had encounters with their respective religious figures. I highly doubt that any of these people died for something that they believed to be a lie, but that also has no effect whatsoever on the validity of their beliefs. This line of thinking just isn’t a reliable pathway to truth seeing how you can die for something that you believe to be true and still be wrong.

Not only that, they were all previously Jews, betrayed their own religion, to go to places and prepare to die of speaking what they saw. And not just that, they were all TORTURED for weeks. Weeks and weeks before their final days. Just to speak of the same thing. Their undying loyalty is what we all should strive. Sure, Jesus is a great role model, but the undying loyalty the apostles have for him is just as valuable

The people at James town died for a man they believed they saw read minds and heal people right in front of them. In summary, people dying for something they believed they saw is extremely weak evidence that what they saw occurred

Please name the source; I am very interested in that topic actually. Also - I would argue that your example sounds very probable. BUT, the disciples of Christ all swore by their testimonies when they were tortured and brutally killed. Why didn’t at least one disciple revoke their testimony? The ones who were persecuted stood by what they saw, and even when separated by hundreds of miles (because they scattered), they swore true to what they saw?

@@RealTruthCore I’m not sure what source you’re asking for. The Jim Jones thing is kinda common knowledge. According to what sources did the disciples not revoke their testimony and according to what source did those who separated say it was true?

Well considering psychosis is usually described as your emotions controlling you so much that contact is lost with external reality, it’s pretty easy to assume that one would be willing to die for something they believe is true without that thing actually being true. The severity of one’s beliefs does not in fact alter reality

Facts the majority of people will lie about the truth to keep themselves out of jail or prison so they can continue providing for their families. That's why plea deals are not equivalent to guilt. They are a person waying the risks and choosing to be their for their families even though the police and courts are corrupt. It would take something like meeting God to convince people to maintain the truth all the way to death and beyond.

My great-grandmother was schizophrenic. She would swear to her final breath that her own son intended to poison her food and kill her, that she saw him put something in it before he gave it to her. The only thing he put on that meal was salt, but what she concluded was completely different. People don't always understand what exactly they're seeing. They have to interpret their reality, and that interpretation may not always line up with the truth of events. Its how stage magic works: the audience is presented an image, and that image tells a biased story. I'm sure the apostles wholeheartedly believed they saw Christ, risen from the dead. I've yet to be convinced that the truth of events is the same.

A very good point considering the brutality of punishment back in their time and ultimately how their deaths came to be. To my knowledge, the most powerful emotion for a person who knows nothing of faith is not love but fear. Had Jesus's disciples bear no faith in Him and in what they saw, fear would've succumbed them to renounce their statement of Jesus's resurrection.

If somebody was convinced they saw spirits or dēvas or something, and they died for that belief, would that mean that both are real? Or like, i dunno, if a group of people claim to see the mothman and hear it and feel the flap of its wings, can we rule it out as a hallucination, therefore proving the existence of the mothman? Cause that has happened before.

They were brutal and horrible deaths too and were tortured as well. For example Simon was martyred and sawed in half. Bartholomew was skinned alive then beheaded. Peter was crucified upside down because he believed he wasn’t worthy to die in the same way Jesus did, he had to beg them to do it upside down. And John the Apostle was boiled alive in oil but wouldn’t die which scared the emperor Nero so he sent John to the island of Patmos, there many people believe is were he wrote Revelation. These were all horrible ways to die and these men knew without a doubt that Jesus of Nazareth was the Son of God or they wouldn’t have gone to these lengths.
