Fantastic job my friend! That is how you save a carb. That was nothing short of magic. I use simple green for pressure washers and it's quite expensive $20/gallon Canadian where the pinsol is just as good and I think better for so little money. The proof is in that carb you just saved. That float bowl would never have come clean with just normal carb clean spray.

Thanks for the love Pat! I am really glad this little project worked out, the atv has been running quite amazing for just cleaning and setting up the carb! I have found myself using Pine-Sol around my garage much more lately too haha.

Used Pine Sol over the wekend for my old Ford carb and worked very well. Only thing I noticed was Pine Sol tends to eat steel parts more than I expected. The throttle lever and fast idle cam are steel and saw a bit of corrosion on them. Ended up using Evaporust in my ultrsonic cleaner and clened right up. I'm a new believer in the Pine Sol!

Great video. Lots of opinions on whether or not Pinesol should be used on aluminum. I use it all the time, in a heated ultrasonic cleaner. The key is to not let it sit for days or weeks. A couple hours or maybe overnight, then cleaning all of that dark gray stuff off--exactly as you showed. For the rough, external parts, I rub copper anti-sieze in, sparingly and make sure its all wiped clean. That seems to ward off oxidation of the aluminum for a good while. If you use it internally, I'd clean with a clean rag thoroughly. On the brass bits, Brasso and elbow grease get them into great shape.

Yea this is my first time really using Pine-Sol in this manner and I am glad I did rather than using a harsh chemical dip kit. Thanks for the tips, I will have to wipe down the outside with a bit of anti seize. I suppose that would work on the raw aluminum air cooled engine as well?
@sailorcto
@sailorcto 3 жыл бұрын
@@HighPriority I'm not sure how it would do on an air cooled engine. Probably pretty good. I used copper anti-sieze specifically, not the silver nickel-based stuff. I restore old BMW air-cooled bikes, with Bing carbs. Cleaning all that dark gray slurry off from the Pinesol dipping exposes the raw aluminum, so I hit it with WD-40, then wiped down and do the copper anti-sieze. I used Pinesol pure, maybe I'll try it 50/50 like you did.

Sweet! I just came across you vid today 6/3/23. I have a set of 4 carbs off my snowmobile (Rupp / Honda CB550). its been in and out of storage and run very little in the past 17 or so years. As of last winter, I lost one cylinder only rode one short trip around the field. This spring I started it to "summarize" it and noticed another cylinder dropping out. I pulled off the whole rack and dropped off the bowls.... yah. I was rather surprised on the corrosion and gunk build up. seeing I only run non-ethanol gas, i run it dry every spring (well not every spring) the tank is lined, I keep additive in the fuel and I still have a bowl just full of debris. (dirt, rust and deposits even looks like water was in them for a while) Im gonna try this method right here next week. I have a vid here on YT, (custom Rupp). It was running ok when i took this vid in the winter of 20" but not great.

Right on I hope this works for ya! Sounds like a cool project I will def check it out. The tank on this trike was pretty bad as well, rust and chunk. And stuff. I have another vid where I cleaned the tank out, I thought about lining it but didn’t.

I have seen a video of a guy took a vibratory sander put velcro on the bottom of a jar stuck to the sander hung it up turned on the sander to get a little vibratory action going. We 40? Try pb blaster it's cheaper and works great for me better than wd 40 does.

Maybe after soaking you use a water blaster to remove the grey scum. Then you should not need to scrub and the effect should be uniform over the whole caribe.

Nope turning that "aluminum" which really is pot metal black means you've ripped off the protective "parkerizing" which really is a zinc and cadmium coating. It will take the oxygen in the wonderful gas of today and make flowery alumimum oxide. You could have just used hot water and elbow grease to get it clean better. You also are better off using petro based because, well it is supposed to stand in gas for all eternity.
@HighPriority
@HighPriority 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the insight, I did not know this.
@seshadrisrinath

@@HighPriority You dont want to know how I know. Really the best "lazy" way to clean a caked up carb is a few days at a time soak in good old gasoline. Then take it out, tooth brush what you can off, and soak in fresh gas, Rinse repeat 1 week at a time. Works well in "projects time" = Winter, gas evaporates slow, breaks down slow and its all in dead (non riding) time. Also soaking the whole body of the carb is a bit counterproductive. Most carbs have dirt and gunk and other dust on the outside but just gas dried and lacquered inside. Getting those 2 mixed into each other is another sure fire way to make a bad problem much much worse. I'd clean the inside, and leave the outside as filthy as it was. But then again a "restoration" wont work with that.

The best thing is a mixture of meratic acid and water it only takes a few minutes, but it takes the shine off, you can bring it back with a small hand blaster using soda, I discovered it on line and tried it, works great but you are dealing with acid, the only other thing that works better is chem cleaner
