THIS IS A PRODUCT TEST. Today I'm trying to answer a long question I've had about the Mavic Pro. With all it's sensors off, can it land on a moving platform like the old school Phantom 1 and 2? The alarm you hear is object detection, NOT object avoidance.

If you try it again. 1. Fly backwards. It will feel more natural with the drone facing the same way you are, and you won’t need to worry about the forward sensors. 2. Wear a jacket with long sleeves. If the drone heads toward you, your natural response will be to put your arms up to protect you. With a jacket, you will be less likely to freak out during landing. 3. I was waiting the whole video to say this . . . I think we’re going to need a bigger truck! ;-)

Just about to say the same. Or use Course Lock mode if the pickup is running straight. I guess the difficult part is the drone will try to return floating just before landing, which would create a lot velocity for landing.

Chris, if you disable obstacle detection, and then most importantly, under advanced vision settings, disable the downward vision position, you will be able to land it on any moving surface. This is the same feature you need to turn off if you want to hang something under the Mavic without it shooting into the sky automatically trying to avoid it. Once this is off, you can land full speed. It won't slow down as it approaches the ground. In fact, it will SLAM into the ground at max vertical speed (i.e. doing damage). But, it's a way to get it to ignore the surface or any forward movement.

I'm usually a drone snob, but this was great! One thing I didn't see mentioned was the massive turbulence that is created behind the truck. I use the following method for spot landings: 1.) Get used to landing manually. 2.) Develop a set routine of commands (usually forward/down) and get used to where that puts you. 3.) ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE MASTERED STEP 2, find the appropriate place over the truck bed and execute this maneuver. Trying to react to the drone in turbulence is futile. Perfect your landing, then trust your skills and use them!

Really cool Chris, Thanks for posting. Just for those whom will try this challenge in the USA, please be aware of FAA Part § 107.25 and do this in uncrowned/less-populated areas (as mentioned in part B). Also be aware of your local State laws as they differ by state. Part § 107.25 Operation from a Moving Vehicle or Aircraft No person may operate a small unmanned aircraft system - A) From a moving aircraft; or B) From a moving land or water-borne vehicle unless the small unmanned aircraft is flown over a sparsely populated area and is not transporting another person's property for compensation or hire.

Chris, great attempt! I'm with you, I would have thought this would be relatively easy, or at least do-able after a few tests. Much harder than it looks! Thanks for sharing, and for being willing to put your Mavic through some abuse to get the shot! PS -- I watched your abandoned hotel footage you shot (presumably the next day from your comments), excellent work! Did you use the Point of Interest mode in order to get that orbital shot of the exterior of the building, or just fly that manually?

From what I have seen/read/watched, the Mavic works really well with return to home/land when you snap a pic of the takeoff landing area..... Get it up over the bed of the truck, snap a pick of the star in the truck bed, THEN start moving..... Once you're up and moving it might be easier to give it the land command...... just a thought, great video!

Good video Chris. Very entertaining for sure! I had my doubts about this from the beginning, but maybe it's possible somehow? Haven't gone through all the comments, pardon if this is spam, but thinking the air turbulence of the vehicle, even at just 20 mph, might make for a tricky landing? So, maybe matching wind speed and direction, ie - on a boat, would be a good trial?

Were you trying to do that in GPS mode?? That would explain why it was sliding off the back of the truck in landing mode. its using gps to hold its position while landing while your moving down the road.

This is a great argument for buying a Mavic Pro. 20mph crashes onto a paved road and it still works great! Arms didn't break off, props stayed intact and the camera still worked; nor did the battery pop off. (Seriously impressive) This kind of drone is in my future as I'm a totally new to drones. Any suggestions for a good drone to learn on before dropping a house payment on the Mavic?

I was wondering. When you reach a foot up the platform while fling, you could use the option of pointing both sticks down inside. Like this you will stop the rotors (emergency usage) and then the drone will land (a bit rough maybe) but will. I'm thinking about it for some footages to be done in some sail boats here in the Caribbean, which means landing in movement. Ah, other thing. Maybe hand landing can works as well? At least you can grab it tight and put the left stick down to stop the rotors. You could try when have chance. Maybe can works. Do the tests in safe places as you have done. Cheers,

A valiant effort. I'm not sure if this can be done. If it uses GPS while landing it would see the motion. But if it only uses the ultrasonic sensor and down facing cameras it should be possible. These things have so much "smarts" it simply might refuse to power down if it thinks it's still moving. I think it's probably possible. You could always "hand land" it of course. Just get it close and pull it out of the sky.

That's why I'm interested in this test (i.e., boat landing). You may have to turn off landing protection and adjust the stick shutoff to work in non-emergency conditions. Plus I'd work with something like a flatbed truck and start out much slower to work out the technique, then increase the speed of the landing platform.
@matthewlemon

This cannot be done, there is no way that the aircraft will land while it detects a forward velocity. It just assumes that it's flying at 10mph straight into the ground. The only way I can think of it to hand catch it or else come in faster and as low as possible then use the emergency engine kill (same as the engine start) so that the rotors are stopped and it drops to the floor. If you aren't fast enough it will slide of the back of the truck again. Did you have the collision avoidance on? Was that the incessant beeping every time you got close, it sounded like it.
@ChrisRollins
@ChrisRollins 7 жыл бұрын
you are correct! I thought about the emergency engine kill, but it takes about 3 seconds to engage, and by that time the truck would have moved forward and the drone would drop to the street. one person here in the comments suggested a net suspended just inches over the bed of the truck, to prevent it from sliding, not a bad idea.

@Chris Rollins Bro, love these vlogs. I can see that you are under the impression that you should fly with the clear dome on. YOU SHOULD NOT! lol. It is just to protect the gimble during transport, but needs to be removed because A) ALL of your shots are going to be fuzzy and reflecting the light onto the lens and B) it obstructs the airflow from cooling the Mavic; like a turbo charger for an engine, except this engine requires that airflow or it will overheat and damage the Mavic. Hope you read this while your Mavic still functions. I know that the Mavic is hot enough to boil an egg when it's finished it's flight because you're flying with that dome on slowly ruining that awesome little drone. LOL Love your vids and like how ya think. Peace bro and keep 'em comin'.

I have noticed that once it is landing you have almost no control over the mavic as far as directional control. I am sure the wind just blew it out of the truck in that state because you had very little forward stick at that point and props are still on until it lands. It needs a expert mode where we have full control of it.

this is not a gps problem, it's a wind resistance issue. once it lands on the bed, it continues to move whatever direction or speed the truck is. put a topper on the truck (or wide rubber feet on the landing gear) and disengage the rotors completely when it lands, and you're golden.
@4puf
@4puf 7 жыл бұрын
I've done it several times on a boat. You have to hand catch it otherwise it will always slide as soon as it touches a surface. The Mavic need to be tilted forward to be able to move forward. Another suggestion is to come in in reverse, basically facing away from you, makes it more intuitive on the controls.

Its a bit late but if you want to that it would be better to practice with a cheaper drone. The problem is that once the drone in landed I guess you let go of forward move which physically is equal to landing the drone on the not moving ground then as soon as it landed pull the ground off from underneath it by 10 m/h To achieve that you need to gradually slow down forward moving force after it landed, not letting it go at once. I am not sure how easy is that with drone controller, I am gonna receive my drone in few days so I was watching some videos about it to learn some stuff but I definitely won't do this test on it. :)

Aerodynamics. The air is streaming over the trucks cabin and then it drops to try to fill the low pressure directly behind it. When the drone is approaching you and coming down, it's being hit by that air stream, which pushes it back. When you did get it through that stream, then it lunges forward, like when it almost hit you and it hit the roll bar.

Great also :-) was wondering if you make it. Why didn´t you put a blanket on the truck to prevent the drone from slipping. Would have been my idea. But anyway,GOOD !

Tried a "similar" thing with my Inspire 1. Tried to have the craft hand caught on a slow moving sail yacht. I did this in GPS mode and not ATTI mode. Once you center the sticks, the craft wants to stay in that exact GPS location. Hence it is doing 0 mph and the truck is doing 20 mph. The laws of physics dictate that the Mavic "flies" out the back of the truck. Unfortunately the Mavic doesn't have ATTI mode. If you tried with a Phantom in ATTI mode, the craft would have a momentum (flying forwards at about 20mph) when the sticks were centered, allowing you to lower it onto the truck. Someone covered their Mavic with aluminium foil creating a version of ATTI mode. By the way I ended up crashing my I1 onto the deck as the battery was getting low. Better than ditching in the ocean. It was then I realized ATTI mode would have helped. I never did try again. Another way would be to have the truck going backwards, take off from the truck and play the video backwards.

Last sentence is probably the smartest comment on this page :) The only safe way to make it happen and say that is doable! Inspiration and creativity is all you need :)

David Barton will it always try to approach to the stick location? coordinates will automatically be updated for every second?

David Barton I also had to land on a boat with an I1 this past summer. What I ended up doing was 3d printing handles that attached to the legs, very low profile so drag wasn't an issue. I had the person who was operating the camera grab it out of the air and it worked perfectly fine. Could provide the 3d files if you'd like

AMG Stopping a motor boat is nothing like stopping a sailing yacht, especially if you are not the only passenger on a chartered yacht with a limited amount of time to get to the next destination. Stopping safely means the crew drops the sails, and drops a sea anchor and/or starts the iron Jennie (Heaven forbid!). If your sailing, it's windy and pushing the yacht around.

I don't know what Mavic you are talking about, but mine has ATTI mode for sure! Although it can't be selected, it turns on automatically when GPS and VPS is not available.
