Will The New Speckled Trout Limit Improve Louisiana's Fishing?

In Louisiana, on November 20th, 2023 the new speckled trout creel limit went into effect.
Before we could keep 25 speckled trout (that are 12 inches in length or longer) per angler, per day. Now we can keep 15 speckled trout between 13 and 20 inches in length, with only two over 20 inches, per angler, per day.
Why was this done? Was it necessary? Can we reasonably expect the fishing to improve? Was it even worse to begin with?
These questions and more are answered in this video.

Look I fished for first time in Dauphin Island AL this past summer. What a great trip as we caught limits, 6 trout per person, min 16” size. I have not done that around Cocodrie in past 3 years. So that is enough proof for me that increase size and reduce limits work. I will be back to AL this summer

Extremely well developed presentation Devin ! I haven’t posted on LAFB for quite a while but I continue to follow all of your posts. This year I’ve fished infrequently, but I’ve succeeded at Fourchon and inshore at the Sulfur Mine near Larose. Salty water is much further north with the drought. That, combined with the new limits should be a double whammy for population comeback! Thanks for continued support and education on your blogs. RodFather (LAFB Elite).

Loved the video. I’m new to owning a boat and have only been saltwater fishing a couple times. We did all right but we never caught our limits but I don’t care about limiting out. I just love fishing. Most of the time I give all the fish to my family who is usually in the boat with me. I’m glad they changed the regulations before we had nothing to catch anymore. Thank you for the education and keep the knowledge coming. Happy new year to you and your family and tight lines.

THANK YOU! Thank you , thank you, thank you!! Someone who finally seems to understand that there are a multitude of things that have caused the trout fishing to decline drastically over the last nearly 20 years. And had to evidence and facts to back it up. Very well said Capt.👏 Bravo sir. I believe in the next couple years, the trout fishing will be better. Possibly the best of our life time.

Spot on! I think the trout just moved in past years with the freshening. Mississippi the past 5 years has seen the best fishing it has had since I can remember. No doubt there are more people fishing which takes a hit on the population also. I think with the good salinity now and the new limits the trout population should see a dramatic increase in the new few years.

Excellent video. The freshening and saltening makes perfect sense, regardless of other factors. On the east coast we have seen the same thing. Fishing on the Outer Banks in NC, old timers will tell you how salty the water was and having to constantly clean the dried spray on the windows so you could see. While at risk of sounding like a tree hugger, it is true all of the trees/forest that are cut down for urbanization/farming has led to more runoff (freshwater), without the trees/forest to “drink” it before being dumped into the streams/rivers. Compound this with more fertilizers and nutrients from the runoff causing other issues (think “red tide” in FL), and it’s easy to see why a “freshening” could hinder spawning. In NC, our limit is 4 Speckled Trout per person at 14", and it keeps getting worse.

We smashed some trout last year in lake Calebasse, big rain storm came through and we couldn’t buy a fish in there after that. The water wasn’t crazy muddy but it definitely dirtied up and had a lot of small debris floating in it. I couldn’t believe In the short time it took for all that rain to dump, the trout left out in a hurry.

Maybe one day the Morganza spillway will be utilized as intended, should rotate the opening of this and BonneCarrie when required instead of always punishing Lake Pontchartrain… also open the rocks up again and let MRGO bring more saltwater …so many 10+ pound trout were caught at Seabrook in 2001-2003…. Limits were easily obtained in the early 2000s with >100 boats fishing at Seabrook. With a 15 limit, charter captains will be running two trips per day and putting more pressure on the fish.

15:13 that would be fine if they were say OK will do this and when the fish population comes back out, will redo the limits but they don’t they just re-limit and redo the limit and redo the limit until eventually, you can’t catch any really put it in perspective for you we have a gas crisis they start charging through the nose for fuel. The taxes go up on the fuel that’s where the big increase comes from, but when all of that, settles down the tax and never drops, same thing here I remember when the creel limit was I believe 50 and then 25 and to be honest I’m fine with 15 but the 13 and 20 needs to go away

I think you’re right for that area. I don’t think all areas need to be managed the same. West side of the state has been 15 for years and we haven’t see any increase of larger fish. Mostly over stock of smaller fish. To many small fish competing for bait.

Your heading for Texas limits. The more people are fishing the worse it’s going to get. Especially more guides. We had 10 for years then 5 now freaking 3. Ridiculous. But 25 12’s was pretty stupid. Hell 10 is a lot.10 15’s is a good limit. No one should b keeping a 12” trout.
