Join us on an exciting adventure as we team up with Bam Bam Fabrications to bring a classic EJ Holden back to life and see if it will run again.
With Bam Bam Fabrications sharing their expertise, we'll dive into the engine and mechanical components to see if we can get the car up and running.
Will the car make it to the pub without any issues, or will we encounter unexpected challenges along the way? Join us for an unforgettable automotive adventure as we put this classic car to the test.
The EJ Holden is an iconic Australian car that was produced by General Motors-Holden's between 1962 and 1963. It was the first model to be designed entirely in Australia and featured several upgrades and improvements over its predecessor, the EK Holden.
The EJ Holden was available in sedan, wagon, and panel van body styles and featured a range of engine options, including the base 2.2-liter six-cylinder engine and the more powerful 2.9-liter six-cylinder engine.
One of the notable features of the EJ Holden was its sleek, modern design, which was a departure from the more conservative styling of its predecessors. The car's bodywork featured smoother, more streamlined lines, and the grille was redesigned to give the car a more modern look.
The EJ Holden was also known for its reliability and durability, making it a popular choice for Australian families in the 1960s. Today, the car remains a beloved classic and is sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Don't forget to subscribe to our channel and hit the notification bell for all the latest updates. Let's see if we can get this EJ Holden running again!

Love it !! An old Holden Station Wagon……. my first car was a blue EH Wagon, with a baby red motor, wish I still had it. My oldest Brother, bought a blue EH Sedan with a 179 …… later replaced the motor with a 186S motor with extractors …….. he still has it , 52 years after he bought it, last road registered in ‘83. Speco floor shift manual, got the shag pile 🤣😂 carpet, Smiths gauges in the housing that they made for sloping radio speaker on the dash, great nick…….. he only fires it up every once and a while. I want to buy it …….. I’d love to own it, I’d drive it regularly…… but he won’t sell . Cheers and Beers Boys 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻

These things drove ok. My Uncle had one in the 1960s. Lived in Woomera and drove it all around the outback. Moved to Perth in 1980s and and sold it to a couple of girls who drove it around Australia for two years then when they got back to Perth they sold it back to him for what they brought it for. He was always a softy. I think it ended up in his backyard and it sat there for years until one of my cousins started driving it around again.

The engines are generally bulletproof being all cast iron block and head, I replaced the engine in my HR in 1984 with a second hand one from burnt out HR in a scrap yard, moved all the ancillary stuff from the outside of my engine to the second hand one, fitted it to my car and had it running by the end of the weekend, sacrificed three or four cartons of beer with the mates that helped me but that engine ran for another eight years without so much as a cough before I sold the car, still running at the time, in 1992.

Hi just one correction the Hydra-matic (GM) 3 speed Automatic Transmission was available in Holdens model EK, EJ & EH. the HD model came out with a 2 speed Powerglide Transmission.
@edbenti5007
@edbenti5007 Жыл бұрын
If that is an original GM Hydra-Matic transmission it is a FOUR speed non-overdrive fully automatic first offered in the 1940 Oldsmobile, but designed by Cadillac. I had a 1960 Caddy convertible with the Hydramatic. Now maybe GM offered the Hydramatic in Australia as a 3 speed, I wouldn't know, but their 3 spd US tranny was called the Turbo-Hydramatic. The 2 spd was the Chevrolet PowerGlide.
@hamwank
@hamwank Жыл бұрын
@@edbenti5007 Yes the GM was only a 3 speed as the Holden was only a small car compared to the Cadillac, when Holden GMH change in 1965 to the 2 speed Powerglide performance was diminished this transmission was replaced in about 1969 with the locally made tri-matic.

great to see this being done in aus as there is a heap of USA shows like this now. For sure we have a lot of cars like this in Aus sitting on farms. Second I realise that you want to earn money and totally understand that but would be great to see an occasional one moved to like youth corrections or tafe or something like that for teens to learn mechanics and panelbeating on old school cars and build something to be proud of. The Hydramatic was a three speed automatic transmission. My vague memory is that the two-speed Powerglide automatic commenced with the HD. The Hydramatic was unique in that the second gear was direct with some sort of torque converter lockup. Apparently, because of this feature, the engine could be tow-started so long as the car was towed fast enough for friction to begin turning the engine and the oil pump in the transmission to start building enough pressure to energise the servo in the transmission.
@edbenti5007
@edbenti5007 Жыл бұрын
The GM Hydra-Matic was a FOUR SPEED non-overdrive fully automatic, the FIRST fully mass-produced automatic automotive transmission in world history. They called it "fluid drive" and was actually battle tested in WW2. They can move a 3 ton vehicle fast, durable, very tough.
@keithammleter3824
@keithammleter3824 Жыл бұрын
It's a 2-speed transmission. You cannot tow start them. Having only 2 speeds, these EJ cars were known for their gutless drive feel. The engine is only 2.3 litres (138 cubic inches), not really sufficient for such a transmission. GM Australia put "Hydramatic" on these EJ's as a marketing strategy - they had the rights to the name so they could do that, even though it was not what was branded Hydramatic in the USA. The USA Hydramatic box was intended for heavier vehicles with much larger engines. For that matter, even in the USA, GM branded different 3 speed and 4 speed transmissions as "Hydramatic" at various times. You are correct in saying that the Australian Powerglides were 2-speed. They are actually a variant of the same box as fitted in EJ's and labelled Hydramatic. Three speed auto transmissions came to Holdens later, were labelled "Trimatic", and were a considerable improvement.

@@danejames7098 : Sometimes we called them "Try-matic - try and accelerate"". But, actually, they were very good boxes.

@@Rob-fc9wg You are thinking of the EH. The car in this video is an EJ, mechanically identical to the previous EK. The word is "Hydramatic", not "Hydromatic". Although branded Hydramatic on EK's and most EJ's, they are actually what is known in the USA as "Powerglide" - a cheap unit (type C213 etc) meant for basic 6-cyl Chevrolets. The later HD's and HR's were branded honestly - ie branded "Powerglide'". Same actual transmission. You would hardly expect these later cars to get 2-speeds if GMH had already been supplying 3-speeds. Some restorers & lovers of old Holdens replace the auto boxes in EK's and EJ's with Trimatics, as it is not too difficult and the result is a much more responsive car without the excessive revving needed to get the car moving. You need to pick the right Trimatic version (shifter on the right side), get an engineering shop to make up a special flywheel, and do a bit of cutting in the cross-member. Genuine Hydramatic boxes (as obtained from USA) will not fit as the transmission tunnel is too small. GMH probably branded the EK-EJ boxes as Hydramatic as at that time it was the husband who chose the car, and many men read magazines from the USA, where the Powerglide was known as cheap and nasty for the folk who could not afford better than a basic Chevy, whereas the Hydramatic was a luxury quality thing fitted to Pontiacs.

You just worked your auto adventure of will it run. In the US. I'm working on a 606 international tractor waking it up and trying to make it run. It's from the 60's, gas tank rusted threw as the air cleaner can. It's something that's on the slow GETTER DONE as I pick-up used parts to make her run. I enjoyed your adventure. Wish my tavern was around the corner, it's 40 miles away. Great job.

The EJ Holden dated to 1963, the last year the grey motor (215 cid) was used.

215 was a Chrysler motor used in a centura before they went to a 245 hemi.

the holden grey was a scaled down copy of the chev engine which I think was about 200 cubes, so a USA viewer could mistake the size. Both motors looked identical except for size. and yes, the red motor came out in the EH (basically the same body) next model of 149 and 179 cubic inch sizes.

Well done guys. 161 or 186 (I think) motor size? I'm no mechanic but grow up fixing and driving these old cruzers around the farm. Bloody simple to maintain and we used to have a shed full of spare parts.
