Hi Claire. I am no expert in polymer clay, but what I have used to bake it with is an old toaster oven that I got second-hand. It is now exclusively my crafting oven. That should solve the problem of not wanting to use your kitchen oven for these projects. ❤

I do the same. Just have a thermometer to be sure settings are correct or mark new ones that are. ❤

My toaster oven would singe the clay when it turned on to keep the temp correct. I found a roaster with a lid doe it perfect and they are very inexpensive. Everyone else uses toasters. I just never could.

Get yourself a large ceramic tile Claire, it works a treat for working on, even for baking on as well. Great job, loved watching this video xx

I've done polymer clay stuff semi-seriously for nearly 20 years, and I still occasionally cut myself. 😂 Btw, I use ceramic tiles or glass to work my clay on. Some plastics turn sticky because of the clay softeners, and you can even bake your pieces on the tile, so if your clay is soft, it won't bend while moving it on a separate baking sheet. Also, I love these!
@Leena79

And now that the video is finished, I use both UV resin, epoxy resin and polyurethane varnish to finish my pieces. I've had trouble with the UV resin bending some of the thinner pieces, but I need to switch brands to see if that was the issue.
@Perivale
@Perivale Жыл бұрын
@@Leena79 I've had so so luck with UV resin - bending and feeling tacky. I think unless it's being held down securely in a mold it will bend. Also, mixing the resin in the bottle helped with tackiness. Last piece I made actually turned out okay.

@@Leena79 That would be interesting to manipulate that effect to something useful, kind of like slumping polymer clay like one does glass. TY for the info!

Yeah it needs to be bendy for smooth/rounded cuts. If your clay doesn't want to come up easy you can always pop it on the freezer for a bit.

Hi Claire, I was watching your video about the polyemer clay with the chemelion powders and tried to find it on my phone, this is the closest I could find. You said you thought your clay had gone off and was crumbly. It gets that way but you can put baby oil or even hand lotion in it and it brings it back to workable. It doesn't go bad (in my experience) and I've used years old clay just fine. Hope this helps

I've been working professionally in polymer clay for about 20 years and out of all my tools I have two very expensive items, my LucyClay extruder and my custom built pasta roller, but the rest are random tools that aren't even made to working with clay. Dental, nail art, wood working, painting (so many textures or paint brushes), color blenders, ball tools, cake decorating, and various sizes of X-Acto blades since the blades are sold in bulk cheap and make it so much work so much easier. Oh and a few of my husbands tools, but shhhhh he hasn't noticed yet. lol I do have the straight flexible blades as those are a must as well as corn starch. Corn starch is amazing for keeping your clay from sticking to your surface and keeping it from getting finger prints. Rubbing alcohol is also a great tool as it can remove finger prints, dust or other mistakes from the surface of unbaked clay. But be careful and only use a little at a time as it breaks down the clay, but it really can save a piece. You don't have to use acrylic as your base, I use a 12x12 scrapbook glass mat and for smaller pieces I use cheap 4x4 porcelain tiles from the hardware store. And last but most important, buy the coolest, brightest, most fun set of bandaids (plasters) you can! Because even after 20 years I still cut my self at least once a week! lol Being passionate and professional hasn't made me any less clumsy! lol

Use some cornstarch to make things less sticky. It helps it move a lot better. I had a lot of trouble with that finger guard too, it's useless 😂. Eta: those tools with the silicone tips are great for moving resin around on your project and they're reusable.

I love this and I've worked with all of these elements on their own. I love how you have brought them all together. I was thinking of doing similar,but with an air dry clay. Just to see how they turn out. I feel the same about the oven. I had put my little toaster oven in storage, so have not worked with polymer clay in a very long time. To answer your question. I simply topcoat with epoxy resin.

Claire.. I always love your videos. If you do much polymer clay, try a firmer clay for this technique. This just seems to distort quite a bit because it's too soft. Also, you can put some cornstarch on your tile to keep it from sticking.
