Tibet is a mainly Buddhist Himalayan area of plateaus and mountains, known as the "roof of the world", it has been governed by China as an autonomous region for almost seven decades.
And Beijing claims a centuries-old sovereignty over the region.
But the allegiances of many Tibetans lie with the exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
For China he's a separatist threat, a living God for his followers.
Huge crowds gathered at his temple in Northern India on Sunday to commemorate 60 years since the failed Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule.
Supporters of the 83-year-old Spiritual leader prayed at the Buddhist shrine in Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama established a government-in-exile.
But how long can Tibetans pursue their struggle?
And what's Beijing doing to win the hearts and minds of Tibetans?
Presenter: James Bays
Guests:
Einar Tangen - Political Analyst who advises the Chinese government on economic and development issues.
Andrew Fischer - Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam who researches the impact of Chinese developmental policies in Tibet.
Tenzin Tsundue - Tibetan Activist, Writer and Poet.

I'm Korean. We Koreans also have suffered from Japanese occupation and pressure with losing our country. We also believe that Tibet is indeed Tibet and belong to Tibetan people while ending Chinese aggregation and occupation. FREE TIBET FROM KOREA! 💙💛❤

All true. But don't act like your hands are clean. Vietnamese people suffered under the American occupation and invasion of their land. And South Korea had no problem sending 320,000 soldiers to help America with it's invasion and occupation of Vietnam in exchange for money. Fortunately for the Vietnamese they won and kicked America and its allies out. But America and her allies (like you Koreans) dropped more bombs on the Vietnamese people than all the bombs of WW2 combined. Over 1 million Vietnamese were killed. So South Korea contributed to Vietnamese people's suffering in the 60s and 70s. Unlike Koreans, the rest of the world does not think that invading another country, occupying it, and dropping bombs on them is somehow moral, just and ok when America does it.

I think India's Northeast is more likely to be independent because India's unfair laws against local people ,such as immigration bills, and the Northeastern Indians are discriminated by the Indian mainland. The Indian government's ability is also questioned, and they will not give priority to the develop under the india ruling. The india can only make the Northeast state continue to be poor for a hundred years. Why does the Northeastern state of India want to become a second-class citizen of India? They will realize this, and will independently and publish laws that are better for themselves and trade with all countries. Not being sucked up by the Indian mainland.

Until 1949, Tibet was an independent Buddhist nation in the Himalayas which had little contact with the rest of the world. It existed as a rich cultural storehouse of the Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings of Buddhism. Religion was a unifying theme among the Tibetans -- as was their own language, literature, art, and world view developed by living at high altitudes, under harsh conditions, in a balance with their environment. The Dalai Lama, an individual said to be an incarnation of the Buddha of Compassion, had been both the political and spiritual leader of the country. The current Dalai Lama (the 14th) was only 24 years old when this all came to an end in 1959. The Communist Chinese invasion in 1950 led to years of turmoil, that culminated in the complete overthrow of the Tibetan Government and the self-imposed exile of the Dalai Lama and 100,000 Tibetans in 1959. Since that time over a million Tibetans have been killed. With the Chinese policy of resettlement of Chinese to Tibet, Tibetans have become a minority in their own country. Chinese is the official language. Compared to pre-1959 levels, only 1/20 monks are still allowed to practice, under the government's watch. Up to 6,000 monasteries and shrines have been destroyed. Famines have appeared for the first time in recorded history, natural resources are devastated, and wildlife depleted to extinction. Tibetan culture comes close to being eradicated there.

Maybe you should have dug a bit deeper. Missionaries and explorers who visited Tibet under the DL described Tibet as an "open sewer." Life expectancy under the DL was 33 years and the people were not allowed to own land, the entire population were squatters. The DL never built a bridge, road, rail, hospital, or school. The DL left Tibet after being invited to a ballet by the Chinese governor. If you research the US State Department archives on their website, you will learn the DL and the CIA have a long relationship that includes a sizable contribution annually to the DL for being a "China irritant." Graduate level history courses at MIT also document the DL and CIA relationship being known to be a concern for China because the DL was facilitating the passage of Russian intelligence documents through Tibet for the CIA and Russia was financing Mao's army. There is an interesting transcript of a conversation in which Nixon, Kissinger, and Ford are discussing the wisdon of issuing the DL a visa to visit the US since he might disclose the relationship. The State Department website has a search engine you should check it out. BTW: My wife was born in Lhasa and because there were no medical facilities in Tibet under the DL, they had to move to Chengdu China, when her mother became gravely ill in Tibet. (Remember, there were no roads in Tibet) Under the Chinese, life expectancy for Tibetans has risen to 55 years and infrastructure has been established. 55 years isn't too bad since the lowest place in Tibet is 13,000 feet elevation and oxygen depravation takes a toll. Free Hawaii!

@@easter-nmgr4086 So you “heard” his Holiness the Dalai Lama enslaves people and you believed it? With what evidence ?? He won the noble prize for his fight for the Tibetan freedom with NON VIOLENCE . China’s only argument justifying Tibet invasion is about “slavery”, feudal lord, Qing dynasty. Almost everywhere when Tibet liberation is talked about these are the only “arguments” of people supporting PRC. CCP even made films back in the days to show to their people that they “liberated” poor Tibetans from Dalai Lama and monks as a propaganda. And good for you if you are a Nepali who’s proud of the Gorkha army or any other historical figure but please don’t assume that Nepal has a history without any bloodshed. If when the massacre of the Nepalese royal family happened, and China came to Nepal claiming to “liberate” Nepalis from the war of heritors, have their own people in Nepal, impose restrictions regarding the practice of your religion, impose you to learn their langue and condemn you as a criminal for saying anything against their government, would you be ok with that??? And let’s not forget the communist party, the NCP (Nepalese Communist Party) who were violent and killed anyone they deemed were stability against their communist ideology, in pre 2010 period . “Slavery by Dalia Lama” is literally a wild UNO card that China uses in which there’s no point arguing because not only it’s a ridiculous accusation but also because there’s absolutely no point explaining rationally to someone who refuses to listen and speak with logic, evidence and sanity.

Lol, leave other country affair alone, India itself has far more greater domestic issues. China issue is just a tip of an ice comparing to what non-Hindu minorities are going through here, especially Northeast Indian.

@Cadia L, the so called "tibetan exiles" who are feeding on Indian food and living on Indian money won't be able to protect themselves if they get the so called "independence". They will be gobbled up in seconds by neighboring countries. It is currently safe because it's under Indian protection and it will remain so for eternity. If the tibetans had such valor they wounldn't have fled to India in the first place and living there for 60 years now peacefully and enjoying all the freedom like any other Indian in the country. Tibetans need to be greatful to India for what it did to them and continues to do so. Otherwise they are backstabbers and traitors.

roystonjohn lourdes actually Han cHinese originate from a small part area of yellow river, which is located in Central and a bit north west China. Manchuria is genetically related to Korean, Inner Mongolia to Mongolian, Canton to Vietnamese, Yunnan to Thai, and Fujian to Taiwan'austronesian. But now they were all annexed by China.

Yes Tibet was independent country in history, but Central and local government had signed "17 agreements"for peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1950s, today Tibet is a part of China which recognized by all countries in the world and UN organizations. Can Christians ask for independent or freedom of Constantinople from Turkey today ?

You are Mistaken. First, that 17 points agreement was forced upon 5 delegation members of Independent Tibet after Communist chinese PRC invaded eastern part of Tibet esp Chamdo in 1949. Second, that 17points agreement was taken place in 1951 not 1950.

Middle way approach is the solution to Tibetan issue. His holiness Dalai Lama's vision is transparent. Tibet was independent but willing to remain under china for genuine autonomy. Freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

I believe Tibetan must grow together with the Chinese supporting their GDP with same currency.Tibet although produce natural gas in fact are far more beyond reach to other countries plus East Asia n Russia too has such resources.Being secluded so long in the past until Chinese, British n India became involved with them with not much to offer vise versa other than colonialism,I guess maybe it's this way in the past.If Tibet independent could show sign of fast pace to catch up 1st world, I doubt their currency could stay strong for long even with various countries aids and investments.

@@tenzinchimevlogg6512 it happened in Sichuan province where have deep roots with exile Tibetans, not in Tibet, in fact self-immolation happened among monks in temples or extremists. ordinary Tibetan's relations with Han or government are not bad as you thought

@@jackytang3683 I believe you still don't have the whole picture. Yes there has been more than 150 self immolations in Tibet and even though many are Monks but there are also tibetan commoners as young as 15 years old who gave up their lives. And it's not like it happened only in Sichuan, China is heavily censored that I think you still don't get the whole information. What u have are parts of information given by the Chinese Govt.
