This was so wholesome to watch... 1st bite: Beets; 2nd bite: Beef sauté ; 3rd bite: Yellow split pea; 4th: Cabbage + carrot (sometimes is has boiled potatoes in it); 5th bite: Red lentils; 6th bite: Ground chickpea; 7th bite: mix of beef sauté + Red lentil. Indian food has some of the same flavour profile because of the use of the same/similar herbs. Glad you enjoyed Ethiopian/Eritrean food.

You should try Doro Wat. It’s chicken stewed in a spicy onion based sauce with some boiled eggs that spend some time cooking in the sauce. I’m half Ethiopian and it’s favourite thing to have. I also love the rare meat kitfo but some people are very picky about how cooked their beef is so keep an open mind if you try that. The injera is made of a type of “flour” called Teff. It’s fermented for 3-5 days before poured thin on a traditional Ethiopian pan you cover it wth a lid and let it cook for a few minutes and then take the injera and put it on a clean towel to cool and prevent sticking. (As it’s not flipped during cooking and it can become sticky)

Ethiopian here, I’m glad you tried our food, but I would like to mention the taste might be different from home to home or one restaurant to another. It all depends on the types of spices they add besides the main ones and the amount of spice they put in, and of course cooking time matters too; for Doro wot (chicken stew) and beef or lamb stews as well. Everyone has their style of cooking that suits their taste. So, basically you might have a different experience in another restaurant, hopefully topping the previous one.

From the disclaimer to “don’t come for me “ 😂 your review is very kind and respectful. ❤ the red lentils you are describing is called misir wot made with Ethiopian national Barbara powder ( ground chili peppers with about 15 different spices in it) it’s my favorite and I make it weekly. Traditionally, we eat a combination of each food definitely OK to mix couple of dishes you like in each of your bites. @@pennystwocents Penny and your Dad! Enjoy Ethiopian Food! Injera is a Savoury Pancake, not a Bread. *Make sure Dad don't eat, the Hot Chilly Spicy Red Sauces for Dinner at night. He will get a Heart Burn/Reflex. Only give him the yellow Sauces and the Veggies, the mild ones. Because, he is not used to it. Make sure, you keep Milk and Yoghurt at home, incase, he gets too much Chilli burn. Let him drink water too. Otherwise,, it is very healthy. But, you Penny, can it everything, no problem. Enjoy! Next time go and enjoy Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony at the Restaurant! Just like Japanese Tea Ceremony. Enjoy! 👍😁

I'm Ethiopian, It nice to see open minded people checking our food, one thing I noticed that the dishes are correctly put together, here in Ethiopia the dishe in front of your dads are called "Beyaynetu" and it meant to be eaten take a small amount in each wot with Enjera make it a bite size then eat, it's for fasting season and it wouldn't touch any meat or diary product the dish with you is just normal "Tibs" because here in Ethiopia if you go to meat house you would have normal Tibs, if you want to try other tibs type please ask the restaurant if they serve "Shekla Tibs". The Other thing I would recommend is may be try "Doro Wot"

Awww you guys are sweet ❤️ next time I would try doro wot and all the red stew ( not too spicy but mild) Shiro ( chickpeas) with salad Gomen mustard and collard greens Missir wot Red and yellow lentils Beg wot ( yellow and red spicy lamb stew) The beef tibs is better when it’s awaze tibs ( the white tibs sometimes can be bland in the us for foreign clients) IF your worried about the red stews being spicy DON’T. When you mix the variety or veggies and red stews together in one bite the spicy level goes down big time. I wouldn’t recommend chicken tibs , it’s something they started in US restaurants. With that being said Ethiopian food is usually made to be eaten all together. The flavors blend well with each other. It’s like taco with all the fixing. When you’re a first timer restaurant tend to recommend all the mild testing food. I hope you get to try all our other dishes with robust flavors!!! ❤️❤️ The red stuff you ate is beets ( the one with the sweet flavor. You comparison with Indian food is ON POINT. As a person who like both, Ethiopian food you can taste the spices blend together really well but in Indian food can have some strong spices. I can taste every spicy when I eat Indian food …

Definitely try Indian food. Go to a buffet if possible to try lots of things and see what you like. I’m not a football fan ( but rooting for SF). I’m going out to a French restaurant during the game which is my tradition.

the first bite you took & mistaken as red cabbage is beetroots actually this is less i mean there should be clear description & a lot more veggie combos. and even there wasn't our national dish on the platter, but enough for first experience. Honestly, i liked the way you were respectfully open to eat with hand, which you did perfectly without making any mess as first timer grabbing the food .

Great description of the first experience with Ethiopian. You and your Dad are really adventurous. I have never liked Ethiopian food at all, although I love the people and restauranteurs. I just don't like lentils and their bread much. Most people would not try Ethiopian, I am impressed. I LOVE Indian food BTW. You should definitely try Indian.

@@Lemlem7682 I have no doubt that is the case, and I am certainly happy that there are Ethiopian restaurants where people can get these foods. I am just saying I personally don't like it, no one is going to like every kind of food. I think everyone should try it and other foods they haven't tried, and that is one of Penny's missions I think which makes Penny's Two Cents a fun channel.

@@Lemlem7682Fair enough. How am I to know whether people will try a different cuisine? Ethiopian restaurants are in every city so lots of people are trying it and many are liking it. I agree with you I should not have put it that way, I apologize.
