Are you a Jacobean fan? You might be mad about this flip. Sadly, the veneer damage was extensive enough that it made more sense to paint it out.
I did want to try to save the top. After stripping it down and sanding through the grits, the top was in great condition. I tan washed it and then warmed it up with a gel stain before sealing it with a hard wax oil. I did the same procedure with the front feet.
For the body, I glued down loose veneer, filled in the damage, did 3 light coats of primer and then painted it in Dead Salmon by Farrow & Ball. It’s a lovely brownish, taupey pink. Gorgeous!
I highlighted all the carvings and moldings with gilding. I was going for subtle elegance so I had to restrain myself on the gold, but I think it’s just right.

The last part of the video features the winner of the furniture challenge I hosted. I picked the theme of Romanaecore/Coquette. 27 people joined me to flip a piece in two weeks. All entries had to be submitted by Saturday, February 24th. I picked the top 3 on Sunday and then people voted for their favorite in my stories on Instagram.
The winner was Kathy from @WhatKCcreates. She chose an antique dresser and mirror to flip. She completely stripped it down, applied a tan wash followed by a gel stain. Then she applied an elaborate floral furniture transfer over the drawers. Stunning!

Lisa, you're the professional, so I'm not going to be upset with you if you paint a piece or not lol. You can clearly see what's wrong and you know what to do for the best outcome. If I had a piece of furniture that needed work, I wouldn't hesitate to bring it to you and let you decide what is the best for it. My dad refinished furniture as a hobby & beat it into my head as a kid “you don’t paint wood.” So, I initially freaked out @ paint but it’s so pretty I’m all in 😊 The right paint on the right piece with the right artist makes a world of difference! (I love the gold!)

This is a beautiful piece. I wasn't sure if I would like the dead salmon color, but it looks fantastic, especially with the romance theme. I love the contrast between the light paint and dark stain on top. It is stunning!

Thanks! Yes, I’ve never done transfers either. I think I like them best when people paint the edges and embellish the actual transfer to make it look hand painted. I’m not very artistic like that though 😅

I think that yours is the best piece of the Challenge. Dead Salmon doesn't exactly have a poetic ring to it, but it is the perfect color for that dresser. I was kind of surprised at the choice of stain for the top (I was thinking walnut, like actual Jacobean furniture had), but I really like how your tones complement the almost-pink of the paint. The gilding is just enough and really brought it home! You gave the old gal some femininity and a little glam, and now she can enjoy a whole new life!

I loved it! Dries in 15 minutes and recoat in 1 hour. It sprayed like a dream too. I don’t have a con yet. I’ll definitely be using it again.

Have you checked out Furniture Fables? Good tips on taking the middle ground on painting vs refinishing creatively. Like stripping the veneer off drawers & stenceling over the solid wood. (Similar to what Kathy did with transfers.) It can be beautiful. Kathy understood that. I spotted her as my choice for winner the first time you showed her entry. An old lady can be modern, rustic, And beautiful. And aren't the flipper challenges an opportunity to go outside the business model box? Kathy has some wow techniques in her skill set. Layering gell stain tickles my curiosity. Also Love your stripping tips. Thanks for the contest. I hope you get loads of views.

Hi! I can't recall which video, which piece, but it had to do with veneer bubbling after drying. A trick after it is on is to give it a tiny bit to dry and then ho im and put a somewhat wet rag on it, and go over the veneer, then turn off lights & in your completely dark room, put a lamp up on it for viewing, and it will show you areas not stuck. Then put iron on it directly, low setting 3, and go over the spots to restock them and it will be good. Maybe you already know that trick now, lol! ❤video may have been awhile ago...❤

Just an FYI. BIN Shellac has an Advanced Synthetic Shellac that is water based. I have not used it yet but saw another KZfaq flipper test it out and really liked it

Great challenge piece. Loved the color choices (except the name of the paint "Dead Salmon," really?) More of a blushy taupe to me...anyway, beautiful gilding as well. It's very beautiful ... however... it wouldn't sell in my area -- very conservative Central IL ! What I would do with my buyers in mind is Shabby Chic it white and use dark wax as a highlight. Yes we're 10 years behind everyone else !! I have a gorgeous Anthropologie Enchantment Dresser completed and it's sitting and sitting !

it is very nice but I think you could have repaired the veneer and brought it back to its original beauty, which, I'm afraid to say, would be much more beautiful that painting over such wonderful wood. I've seen other refinishers do more work on veneers and bring it back to beauty.

It wasn’t cost effective for the return on investment. Since I do this as a business, I have to consider the business side and resell value vs the time and cost investment.

It could have been restored with a little more effort than painting. I'm not an expert however, I've restored a few items. I always try to resore to original even if it has a few battle scars. I don't believe antique pieces need to be in pristine condition.

I don’t restore every piece. I evaluate each piece carefully to determine which design direction to go. I have to weigh many factors like my time, profit margin, and the market for certain pieces. It’s a business at the end of the day. Some pieces I restore and some I paint.

It Is refinished it was given a paint finish and it’s beautiful! Little disapointed that you don’t have a list of people I would love to see them. It was so fast in the vid it’s almost impossible to stop and look up each one.

It looks nice I don't like painting antique furniture. I prefer doing repairs and then bringing it back to it's former glory . I don't like yellow gold I prefer white gold . But everyone has there preferences . Still looks nice . Love From Oklahoma

Baby poo color, covered perfectly good wood, then added gilding to a Jacobsen style piece turned country with paint. Unbalanced, and amateurish looking. Notice all the wood on the winning piece? Paint is just an excuse not to restore. Restoration takes time, skill and elbow grease...and a love and appreciation of wood.

Nope. You should stick with pieces that aren’t as unique as this one, if you plan to paint it. Leave these ones to professional restorers. This piece is not for someone just wanting to do a craft.

Dorothy, this piece is for whoever owns it, for whatever purpose they choose. It's not sacred. And its uniqueness doesn't make it a museum piece. I am sure Ivy Lane is not depriving restorers of material on which to work. There is a glut of antique and vintage pieces on the market and the demand has been shrinking...(not that you have any right to tell anyone what they "should" do with their own property anyway) And for the record, "craft" was a pretty "Karen" way of insulting Ivy Lane's hard work and vision.

It was a hunk of junk before Ivy Lane made it so beautiful. I always said it’s your property, you can take an axe to it and throw it in the fire pit if you want, it’s yours and people should zip it if they don’t have something nice to say. Excellent job it came out so beautiful 😍
