Right, he doesn't just air roll the whole time. He rolls to where his car needs to be. I'm rather new to the game and have been trying to learn air roll the same way. Rolling the whole time is cool and flashy, but I think it can be a bit inaccurate. Zen's style of a direct approach is more accurate and is exactly what I've been wanting out of my gameplay. Feeling blessed I haven't learned certain habits already. 😇

What makes Zen great is (I believe) his ability to predict what is going to happen. That is, not only in terms of what is happening on the field, but also generally understanding the physics of the game and predicting how his opponents will move and how the ball will move around the field. I also think that's why he's so mechanical, because he understands the flow and physics of the game so well. This is what made Monkey M00n so great, his efficiency and direct lines to the ball were unmatched at the time, but we will see if other pros can catch up as quickly as they did with MM.

The main reason zens movement is very different from other pros is because his air roll left is an analog input (binded to trigger) instead of a static input (binded to button), allowing him to control the speed of directional air roll dynamically

I agree that Zen is destined for the very top. Having said that, I think every couple of years in rocket league we've seen a new wave of top player reach a new mechanical baseline for pro play and I think the likes of Daniel,Zen, even Chronic to an extent are brining that new baseline with them, ready to wash away some of the older pros. E.g. I'm 26, have 1000 hours in rocket league and am a totally non mechanical but decent player. I solo qed a high GC, 1680 ish MMR 3s tournament and had duo q teammates... now one was shocking, genuinely a diamond player, if that. His mate who carried him there... random player, nobody has ever heard of has totally carried us to win this tournament. I'm gobsmacked by what I'm seeing, every game this guy is hitting clips that would make top 5 plays in a full RLCS season and his air control is special. So I add him. Turns out to be a cpl of 13 year olds... the way Zen moves is so similar, if a little cleaner than this kid... but this kid... 2k hours. I'm sat there thinking, with 2k hours I'd still be 1/4 this kids level and it shows how good you can be when you build your mechanics tailored to a specific game from a young age.

This is crazy because litteraly all the RL pro scene is actually saying that Zen enter the scene will change things, but randoms RL players in the comments still think they are more able to judge on this. Btw something have to be clear, freestyling is mechanical, play mechanical isn't freestyling.

jack something you may find interesting is that zen uses L2 for air roll left. Meaning he has analog air roll left. This also means that he reverses when he uses air roll left (which is his main air roll) so he actually uses R2 at the same time to cancel out the reversing. I think that may factor into his mechanical ability and it might be theoretically optimal to have air roll left or right on L2. Something to think about.
@MrBreadisawesome
@MrBreadisawesome Жыл бұрын
also that means that for half flips, he lets go of L2 right after jumping as to not diagonal flip backwards to the left.
@MrBreadisawesome
@MrBreadisawesome Жыл бұрын
and I know you can already just feather air roll left or right to get an effect that is close to analog but i have played with both (i have 4000 hours) and I genuinely think having a true analog air roll left/right could be the future of the game.
@MrBreadisawesome
@MrBreadisawesome Жыл бұрын
another thing to note is that he will actually often reverse right as he is about to get a reset, meaning he presses L2 by itself without cancelling the car reversing. I have spent a lot of time analyzing his replays and slowing it down before he gets resets. When you are reversing in the air and get a reset, sometimes your car will fall off the ball differently and even stay closer to the ball as well. Take a look for yourself. Its actually insane
@MrBreadisawesome
@MrBreadisawesome Жыл бұрын
last thing, this also means that he could theoretically have true analog for air roll right as well. All he would need to do is hold air roll right and then feather L2 and R2 together. L2 cancels out air roll right but will make the cancellation analog, and R2 cancels out the reversing mid air so you have optimal speed.

At 13:10, I have two guesses for what he possibly did to recover like that. Either after air-rolling with his roof facing the wall, he did an empty-jump (without a joystick input) and then air-rolled through to land on the wall. Or, he did a flip-cancel so fast that it looked like that freestyler technique of "no-flip". Maybe why it might have been a no-flip is the sudden rush his car had going forward and into the wall.

3:40, I definitely see him being a first man, he's a very quick player as you saw about a minute ago, he went for kickoff despite being on the right side, and had a perfect pass for his teammate (assuming that was communicated and he didn't just go, but not sure). He could also fit nicely into a second man, but third? He's too quick to be thrown back there, even though he does have incredible defense, he's just way more beneficial offensively.

His mechs seem slightly above the average pro player but he seems to risk doing an unusual flip for an unusual outcome which gives him that "mechy" appearance - if he goes out his way to actually learn a variety of flips then he could be a very interesting player as he knows how to do what he's thinking. Honestly, I think the reason why you're reacting so much to this dude, because his phiosophy of movement throughout the game and when to challenge the ball is very much you also. Do you know how in the last vid you, chronic and noly played? How they said "no one moves like you" ... That's very much like this Zen dude. While it might not be spot on, you can see a similar philosophy of movement through the match that reminds me of you. For example, I didn't know I was watching replay's for almost the entire first match and nothing disconnected with me saying "this isn't Jack"... I know the decal should have been a dead giveaway but I honestly am blind to those sorts of changes so it didn't register. So my prediction... He's going to be great. Just like you are great because you both have a really nice flow that throws people off. ( I really was just focused on the match and while I could "hear" everything you were saying, I was tunnel visioned on the match, So I also didn't pick up on the audio cues this was a replay analysis. I'm just dense mate. lol)

I think clips don't do justice to how consistent he is. I'll admit I actually underestimated him, and particularly his mechanical ability, before watching him play for longer periods of time

10:52 I would love to see Zen come to NA. But he’s going to make a great player anywhere in the workd

I am distracted and watched the video thinking that it was your gameplay, realised at the first goal that it was a replay 🤦

He should play first or second, Alpha54 is most dangerous when he is 3rd IMO, Alpha is the best defender and his transition game is great so I think zen pushing forward will help maximize everyone on the team.

He would be so hard to play against he looks so unpredictable but if we are talking how technical a player is I still think jzr has mechanics down so well even though I know he’s not an rlcs player

Zen’s offense is so oppressive and his opponents are always on their back feet, nuts.

Jack - you mentioned you see him as 3rd man mechanical - just wondering how you see Squishy and if that's also why he's played that role for NRG. Thanks!

Squishy was very mechanical a long time ago but in nowadays rocket league he doesn't even have mechanics better than the average pro.
