Episode 3: I drive around the famous Mahonie Loop at Punda Maria in the far northern Kruger National Park. Along the way I run into some Crested Guineafowl, Nyala, and Duiker.
This is a place of legends, lost African kingdoms, ivory hunters, blackbirder's, villains and, of course, magnificent wildlife and scenery.

Not the same - but - when canoe tripping we enjoy long periods of time sitting under a tarp in the rain silently watching and listening. Sometimes a bit of amber fluid will appear. :) And, even when paddling, often we drift silently, without conversation, and yes sometimes in rain, and we will come around a bend and there will be a wolf, or a muskox, or a bear. You never know.

Sounds Magic Robert. I have had a couple of experiences on foot that sound similar. I remember waking up in the middle of a herd of grazing elephants. I had been sleeping under the back of a beetle in the Caprivi strip. They didn't bother me at all and I watched them as I brushed my teeth. It's great to come across an animal in silence. I remember meeting an eland on the other side of a mountain stream in the mountains. The water was loud so it didn't hear me stumbling through the brush. But we held each other's eye for what seemed like hours before he turned and disappeared. Those moments live on.

Thanks for sharing. I hope to visit myself one day. Seeing you drive around looking for wildlife brings to mind another potential benefit of electric vehicles. They could potentially be used as the ultimate wildlife stalking tool. The silent engines and lack of emissions would make them much stealthier and perhaps less disturbing for the animals
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 2 жыл бұрын
They certainly will have advantages, mainly for us! The animals are very used to vehicles. It’s interesting to see how different species behave. Lions couldn’t care less when cars stop - impala get very suspicious of stopped vehicles (because being common no one stops for them) but have no problem with passing vehicles. All the antelope dislike voices and move away. Electric will be a bit problematic it the more remote areas when we cover long distances - even Kruger at 400km long would see a lot of recharges I’d guess?

@WillGoodlet

Hi, Yes I use ND filters depending on the lens. I use ND on the R6 and 100-400 and I rarely use ND on the 400mm f2.8 (because it's main job is photography). I shoot video on both cameras when I don't have time to change over. 60% of the wildlife shots are with NDs For video, I mostly use manual focus these days. I'll try to make a video for the autofocus settings I use

Hey Will! Thanks for the videos! We are learning lots for our future visit. What month was this rainy video filmed? What month (s) are optimal for birding and wild life enjoyment in Kruger?
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. This was filmed in October 2021 - Summer is the optimal time for birding in Kruger (November - March). The rain usually starts in November, while October is known as suicide month because it's usually extremely hot and dry. So the rain in the video was early, and 2021 very wet (La Nina effect). When the rain starts, it immediately becomes cooler and more bearable. While for birding, the summer migrants come south and the summer breeding plumage usually comes in. The northern part of Kruger is by far the best are for birds, but wildlife is more obviously and often seen in the South. Winter is better for interaction and wildlife photography - or at least, winter is more predictable and has better low dusty light, while summer is fresh, green and all about drama, new life, and thunder clouds.

So I have an opportunity to go to Zimbabwe in late January. I’m wondering if the rainy season/foliage would make a 5 day trip a bust for finding wildlife such as the big 5. It’s hard to decide if my resources would be better used elsewhere or at another time. Any advice?
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet Жыл бұрын
It's a difficult question to answer. It depends a lot on what happens in the area, what weather systems come through and also where you go. Wet season can be very rewarding, because there is a lot of atmosphere. Usually lots of young animals around, a lot of additional birds (due to migrations), lot's of birds in summer plumage and a lot of activity BUT. It's hard to see animals in the tall grass, there can be long bouts of wet weather and depressed sightings, the animals are spread out and not forced to concentrate at water & grazing. It's hotter and stickier. The sun is higher in the sky earlier in the day (more so in Zimbabwe because it's closer to the equator) and the light is harsher earlier. For a first visit, I would not recommend summer unless it's likely to be the only visit... I think it's a season that you explore after a few other trips and experiences. You can get fantastic shots in summer but you just don't know for sure. While in winter, there is better light (in terms of golden light), more concentration around resources like water and grazing and therefore more interactions and chances of predation. The grass is lower, there are fewer bugs and the climate better - although extremely cold in the mornings - below freezing depending on the area. You will sacrifice the summer migrants - but it you are not a regular visitor, you will still find MANY things to shoot. Additionally, you get clear night skies.

Never begrudge rain in such a climate! November eh? So that's spring. But wait, it's February! Hmmm... You must be in process of posting unseen videos from "back when". I know you guys have had a hard time with the edicts re: the infamous C19 - so is that why we're seeing 3 months old videos? Things returning to "normal"?
@WillGoodlet

Hi Breck, I’ve been working on recovering my house and computers from a devastating lightning strike which caused around $15000 damage. Still have lots to do to get back to normal. Nothing to do with C19! I still have unmade videos from 2019 so I don’t always make them in order

Can anyone go and see the actual meaning of punda in tamil....
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 2 жыл бұрын
It means Donkey in Swahili- which is the language it’s named in. What it means in Portuguese or Tamil is not really relevant. Lots of languages have words that are ‘offensive’ in some other language e.g the Mitsubishi “pajero’ means to jerk-off in Spanish but has no meaning in English.
