I explore the latest advancements in teleconverters and how I can use them with my mirrorless camera to achieve greater reach and quality in my wildlife and nature photography. I discuss the pros and cons of using teleconverters or if it's better to crop the image, the different types available and how to get the best results with them. I also share some auto-focus tests for canon shooters and tips on how I can use teleconverters for video and stills.

Will, I use a 1.4 on my mirrorless Sony A9 with Sony 200-600. You are right about ‘light needed’ and air mass movement but in the correct circumstances the image captured is superb. It’s the quality of the light that needs to be used and early morning/dawn and evening sun set are my favourite times to get out and capture the shots. Topaz Denoise is the game changer that allows the use of higher iso levels and useful shutter speed and then cleans up the grain. Early morning dawn light or the red evening light on deer/hares etc and the combo is a killer. Thanks for doing the videos and giving us something educational and well presented to think about and help get us all through this time. It is really appreciated.

Hi Mark, thanks for watching and yep, what you say makes sense to me. Especially with the big pixels on the A9, I have a feeling they also have a lot to do with it. How much of a difference do you note in colder conditions? I feel I definitely get better results in winter than summer.

@@WillGoodlet 😄heat haze is not a major problem in the UK but the clear cool mornings or still evenings are definitely going to make a difference to image sharpness. The heat haze of SA midday Sun will affect shots using a teleconverter especially when the critter is ‘too far’ away. I tend to just go out when the light is right and just hope the nature turns up at the right place and time. Over the sea and lakes, the heat haze does kick in even in the UK, so birds on water needs thinking about. The cool air/dew probably contains less dust as well aiding sharpness when shooting at ground/eye level. But I do agree winter will tend to give sharper pics.

Super useful video as ever Will. After a lot of thought, I finally jumped on the 1.4 TC to use with the Fuji 70-300 on the X-T4 and it's been excellent! No loss in image quality and the autofocus in good light is not affected at all and still really fast. Thanks for this video dude because the two factors you mentioned about how useful it can be for video along with not losing as many megapixels for photos were a couple of points which lead to me taking the jump. For video it's been awesome because the X-T4 has a 1.29 crop mode for filming which gives the 70-300 w/ the 1.4 an 800+mm equivalent and for a 580g lens (700g w/ the 1.4), that's pretty insane! Plus, not cropping as much has definitely made a difference. Can't wait to release my new surfing short film on my channel early next week where I first used the combo. You mentioned when I commented on one of your other videos that you might be interested in the X-H2s. Any news on that Will?
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 3 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Yes, I am interested in the XH2 S but I’m wary because it’s hard to sell on Fuji gear here later on. Much easier to sell Canon. Same for OM, Z-Cam and Black Magic I’d love to try them all :) The Power of the Atlantic video looks awesome on the X-T4!

@@WillGoodlet Wow!!! Thank you so much for checking out my channel!! Really appreciate it 👍. Yeah the X-T4 is such a fun camera and very underrated for action. As long as you don't spray and pray and choose the right autofocus mode along with using single point or zone, it's excellent for sports and wildlife. Plus, the retro design just makes you want to go out and shoot almost on a daily basis. Ah fair enough, but Fuji cameras seem to be getting more and more popular cause I've seen many photographers use them since living in Morocco, so maybe that might change. Can't wait to finally do an African safari hopefully sometime next year. Do you think the Tamron 17-70 and the Fuji 70-300 w/ the Teleconverter will be enough for hybrid shooting on a tour?

The question of "How far is too far?" is an interesting one. I am only just beginning to figure that one out, but isn't it the same question as which longer focal length lens should I use for a particular subject, of which using a teleconverter is an extension? If the subject is too far away, then the image is too small, and no matter the cropping, teleconverter and so on, you will hit noise of some sort. So, the old adage of trying to mostly fill the frame is useful to answer the question.
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 3 жыл бұрын
It's related but I think we also need to factor distance to subject. I could fill the frame with an elephant using an 800mm but still have poor image quality simply due to atmospheric effects (usually heat) that compound with physical distance and magnification. Whereas, I could fill the frame on a 400mm at half the distance or 200mm at quarter and (I believe) have a much improved image. I think that atmospheric heating plays a big role in Africa - probably much less so in cooler climates?

Another fabulous video Will, I really like the way you explain and quantify your findings and thoughts in your videos, I have over the years found very similar results and findings with tele convertors, in the right time and situation they are a fantastic tool like you say, and on the new mirrorless systems even more so, if you don’t mind I will be sharing your video with some new photographers to help them understand there use, you do a far better job than I could ever do. Learning how to get close to our subjects is always best and what I try to do the most but, we love our subjects but they don’t know that so having that extra reach at the right time is always handy lol Hope you are loving your new R5, please keep safe my friend Regards Michael

Hi Michael, thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. I'd be delighted for you to share the video, that's what it's for :) Getting close is the real secret - It's hard over here though. The only real way to do it is if you can go with private safaris and drive off road or have some kind of relationship with a local farmer. As an immigrant who can't speak the local lingo, its hard. They replaced the R5 - that was the new one in the video, not take a shot with it yet :) Take care!

You, sir, are a wonderful teacher. Your reminder about atmospheric effects was spot on. Sometimes magnification can be overdone if you want to make a nice picture. What I have finally learned after years of trial and error is that sometimes a wider shot of an animal is better because it shows the context of the environment that it lives in. Thank you for your good work.

Always a pleasure to watch your videos Will - I used to have both 1.4 and 2X TC's but these days I only use the 1.4 primarily given with the 45MP of the R5 I find the in body 1.6 crop (approx 17MP) which I can switch too very quickly, gives me all the flexibility I need and does not degrade the AF tracking speed (or at least I think it does but that's just my impression to date)!
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts as well. I suspect the 2x might be too much for the R5 in terms of diffraction due to pixel size. I want to do some tests to check it out. So using the 1.4 as you do sound appropriate to me and probably the best way to go. It's certainly faster to focus than the 2x that's for sure!

Thanks David :) I think that the TC's on Mirrorless (with the frame wide AF) have improved tremendously. Especially for someone like me who uses a compromise lens selection - I don't have anything over 400mm because I want to be able to catch an elephant or a bird - the birds get teleconverted. I used to have longer lenses and change - but it became a logistical nightmare.

Hi Andrew, thanks for watching. It's a very noticeable trait with any of the long glass I've used out here. My 800mm native lens behaved in exactly the same way as my teleconverted 400mm. Much better results on both with closer distances, cool air and softer light. Theoretically, teleconverters should work best on big pixel full frame cameras (like 1D series, older 5D3 etc...) and fast glass F4 or F2.8. The pixel size on something like the 7D2 or R5 will be too small and the airy disks created by the optics too large, causing diffraction effects especially at higher apertures. Ideally we want a situation where the pixel is larger than any airy disk. On something like the 1Dx or R6, the pixels being larger, can accommodate the higher aperture on lenses like the 150-600's with TC's (f9 just) but easily accommodate them when using f2.8 and f4 with TC's - or a 100-400 + 1.4. Then the lower resolution of these cameras will give the glass an easier time too. If, when using the TC, there is no need to crop in on the large pixel cameras they should produce better images (that's what I believe anyway!) Something I'll test in the near future. I'm guessing the use cases from my observations so far would be: - Use TC's on low res cameras and fast glass to good effect. - Crop in on High Res cameras and avoid TC's especially on slow glass (f5.6 +).

Thanks so much Stratos! Happy to hear you enjoyed it :) I think the R6 will probably handle the 1.4 better than the R5 (the R5 is diffraction limited with that lens and the 1.4 but the R6 is not due to the bigger pixels). The biggest issue is likely to be the loss of 1 stop of light and slower autofocus with the teleconverter. But it depends greatly on what your subjects are. For me, with large mammals, slower AF is not such a big deal.

Very interesting video Will. I use a Canon 1.4 tele with a 100-400 mk 2 and a 5dsr. I have found that the image quality is very near the naked lens and auto focus also near. The problem is, as you mention, f8 only gets the centre most af points working. Mirrorless solves that, but I have used many mirrorless cameras, my latest is Panasonic S5, and nothing beats an optical viewfinder for me. EVFs are good and certainly good enough, but I do like the optical version.
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, thanks for watching and your thoughts. It's so useful for me to read all these different perspectives - and I'm sure for other people too! I do like an optical finder too, it's a much more authentic and analogue view and, personally, I feel it's an important way to connect with the wildlife and scene in front of us. For me, simply watching wildlife is the overwhelming component of what I enjoy and the OVF is a great part of that. I will say though, that the R5 is really very nice to look through. The only think I've noticed is flying geese with 8 wings as the frame frequency messes with their wing beats. It's great to hear that you rate the optical quality of the converted lens on the 5Dsr too, I haven't tested the R5 (obviously it still has a low pass filter with the 5Dsr doesn't) but it gives me hope for very useable images when I finally start shooting it.

Very interested to see how they work with the R5 as considering whether to upgrade to an R5 for wildlife and landscape photography

Hi Stephen, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. From my perspective, the TCs work far better on the R5 than they do on my optical cameras. I would normally not use the TC's on either the 7D2 or 5D3 except on f2.8 lenses - but on the R5 they work really very well in comparison.

Yes I definitely expect this is true. I'd like to try one myself! The one bonus of the TC setup is if you need a wider field of view or low light performance above reach, but sometimes you need a little extra reach - saves you owning two lenses at the cost of quality at the long end.

TC's are for sure an important tool in my bag. On my 400fl i think i use the 1.4 about 40% of the time and the 2x about 10-15% of the time. This have had me asking more then once if not a 600f4 would be the right lens for me. Then again you know when you really want that 2.8 or when 600 is just to long. Nice upload Will =) Cheers

I know how you feel, I would like both the 400 and the 600 but I went down that road before and it was horrible trying to travel with it all! Feel like, even though I lose some quality with the TC's it is the best compromise. If I only shot birds, I would definitely want the 600.

Thank you Mr. Will Goodlet for a deliberation that I had been waiting for. Being an enthusiast nature & wildlife photographer, I’m a Canon shooter for last 12 years. More often than not contemplated leaving Canon for Nikon or Sony. However, apparently Canon’s success in achieving seamless compatibility of their EF and EF-S lenses with MILCs via adapters inspired me to stay back and even thank Canon. Thinking seriously about procuring EOS R or EOS RP. My premium telephoto lens for bird photography is EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM that I always use with 2x teleconverters on my 7D and 5DII. Sometimes I feel the need for more reach and stack 2x and 1.4x teleconverters but rely on manual focusing for static subjects. I use version III teleconverters and stack them with the help of a Canon 12mm extension tube. Perhaps now I can use this combo of 300mm f/2.8 + 2x + 1.4x via an adapter on the EOS R or EOS RP and still get AF! Am I right? Thank you in advance.

@WillGoodlet 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I believe you are right, I am getting AF with stacked TC's even on the humble M50. I would say though that the R and RP are not well known for great autofocus for wildlife - you might find that a cheaper /possibly better option is a Tampon 150-600 G2 for the more distant subjects? Add something like a 90D and you would have a nice kit alongside your 300 f2.8. I would just be a bit worried about the AF speed on the R - maybe try one before you buy!

Thanks so much for this video! Very precise and informative. I'm not a pro so the fast super-tele primes have so far stayed beyond my budget. But if I happen to find a good secondhand bargain I will buy it and certainly buy TCs for it as well. So for the slowish super-tele zooms I have had TCs haven't been that tempting. But already with something like a sharp f/5,6 400mm in a good body 1,4x TC should work very nicely. And if a sensor's pixel density isn't very high (staying below the DLA limit) 2x TC could be a usable option as well - though resulting f/11 is quite dim. One nice thing with TCs is that they give flexibility to otherwise so limiting primes. Like, you could buy slightly lighter and cheaper 400mm f/2,8 and have the benefit of great low light performance (if you can use it wide open / the shallow DoF not coming a problem). And then during daytime add 1,4x TC and get 560mm f/4 or 2x TC and get 800mm f/5,6. Well, the image quality isn't quite as good as if you have a native 600mm f/4 or 800mm f/5,6. But with a 400mm + 2x TC you can focus much closer than with a native 800mm. Too long minimum focusing distance is sometimes annoyingly limitin. For my use I would still prefer to have a 500mm or 600mm f/4 with TCs, because I so rarely shoot in situations where 400mm would give enough reach (with FF sensor). But for a "real" wildlife photographers who have the time and skill to get really close to animals (and have opportunities to take photos of large animals) at early morning / late evening the very bright 400mm with TCs sounds like an excellent combination.

I think the minute the RF super telephotos come out next year, there will be a lot of second hand EF primes on the market... I have to decide what I will do with mine too. Another person I've been chatting to picked up a used 500mm F4 L IS USM for USD1700 recently - just have to be aware that spares may be limited. You are right, the TC's are slow on the super zooms and f5.6+ lenses. I use the 400 f2.8 ii and teleconverters and this combination replaced all three of my telephotos (500 F4, 300 f2.8 and 800 f5.6) Now I have all that in one lens and a couple of teleconverters. Such a big relief!!! The image quality is not quite as good at 800mm but it is good enough for me to use it. And when I need a wider field of view for large mammals, I have it. And now, finally, with the R5 I have the last piece of the puzzle that I have been waiting for. A High resolution full frame sensor. Now I can photograph an elephant with the 400mm one minute and crop in to a bird the next minute without having to change lenses in dusty conditions. Like you, I would also really love to have a 600f4 for bird photography - but I think, when I consider travelling on small aircraft, the 400mm has really offered me a lot of advantages in one lens.

Excellent discussion of teleconverters, Will, though it did raise a question for me. You have a graphic @ 8:22 that indicates subjects will be 2x larger with a 1.4x teleconverter. I've never heard it put this way. I've always been taught that a 1.4x teleconverter has the effect of increasing the effective focal length by 40% or 1.4x. Did I just learn that a 40% increase in focal length doubles subject size? The math in the slide suggests this is the case.

Hi Don, if you are shooting at the longer end mostly and want more reach, it's likely to be frustrating using the 1.4TC. Focus is slow and only really suitable for perched or still birds and larger wildlife. For flying raptors, one of the 600mm zooms might do better. They would offer more focus points, a little more reach and probably close to equivalent image quality (if not better) at F7.1/F8.

Hi Greg many thanks for watching and the question. On a student budget is tricky but not impossible. There are a lot of lenses available these days that just weren’t when I was younger. Your 4000D is going to be fine for record shots and for birds that aren’t moving around too much. So I reckon the first place to think about an upgrade is in the lens department. A lens upgrade will be revolutionary for your shots. I would avoid teleconverters on the equipment you are using right now. You can look at secondhand lenses too. Canon 400mm f5.6 L is what I started with and is a great value choice. Followed by the new Sigma 100-400 zoom lens (rather than older models). If you require a zoom instead. If you can stretch the budget further - something like the 150-600 sigma contemporary or tamron 150-600 would also work well particularly for birds. Once you have the lens, you can look to upgrade your camera at leisure or as needed. Don’t forget you can rent cameras and lenses for special trips. Also camera body rental might be very little compared to camera lens rental in terms of trip costs

Hi Dave, sorry missed your comment as if was held for review for some reason. I have never used the 200-400with TC although it is very well regarded as a wildlife lens for African animals. I've seen some stunning results from other photographers who use it. I'm sure that, given its design, the lens is likely to suffer the least from using a TC of any option out there. I use TC's on my 400mm prime and although the image quality does suffer slightly, it's a brilliant compromise considering I used to carry 3 telephotos on each trip (300mm f2.8, 500mm f4 and 300-800 f5.6 zoom)! Now one lens does the job of all three. I find that the aps-c cameras perform significantly better at f2.8/f4 than they do on the f5.6 lenses they are normally paired with.

I know this is an older video, but it was helpful, since 90% of my photos are birds, which need reach. Thanks. Some commentators who use teleconverters on full frame cameras will not consider them for crop sensors, since the image is "already stretched". I don't understand this view, since the image circle is unchanged. Your explanation would suggest that it still depends on sensor resolution and lens quality, which makes more sense to me. I use the Canon 1.4x TC on an R7 (32 MP crop sensor) with the RF100-500 zoom (a superb lens), and I find the TC provides excellent image quality. Like you, I have no complaints about AF speed, and in fact find that bird eye tracking "locks on" more readily when the subject is larger in the viewfinder. Of course, this may not apply to other sensors or lenses. Do you have thoughts on using a TC with a crop sensor?
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 7 ай бұрын
The tracking or rather, the locking/discoverability of the AF is better. Exposure is also much more accurate with the subject larger in the frame. The sensor resolution (not the size) pushes the lens very hard indeed, the optics need to be superb in both pieces of glass. With DSLR's one of the big negatives of TC's was slow focus due to narrow aperture. But the mirrorless cameras are so much better at dealing with this, so that argument is no longer valid. So you have yourself an L series cutting edge lens with brand new TC design, in a world where camera engineers are producing 45mp full frames and thinking very hard about 80-100mp full frames (to compete with Sony) which will probably use the same glass you do at very similar resolutions - only difference is you will be using the best part of the image circle - the centre.

The best way to get bats is with a camera trap, they do the same as you would for lightening, run a long exposure enough to keep the ambient light out if there is any then hope a bat triggers the light trap and the flashes.if you set the light trap to fire the camera instead the bat will be long gone before the pic is taken.

Well Will, you are among the 3-4 KZfaqrs on camera gear that knows what you are doing. When it comes to TC’s, there’s no question that have a place to fill. When I use my Canon 200-400and I need the extra reach, I smack on a x2 converter (Canon) so I get 800mm, using the built in x1.4 at the same time degrades the image too much. You are 100% right about the distance, heat waves etc. Once shooting rhinos in Namibia at 1120mm I thought I would get great images. Not one was usable, too much heat waves in the desert. Some years ago in Yellowstone, I tried the 100-400mm ver1 and a x1.4 TC, not a great combination. At the beginning of my career I used my 70-200mm and a x2 TC, no problem if you pair it against the cost.

Hi Ruzdi, thanks so much for watching and the great compliment. I can imagine the trouble you had with the Rhino at 1120mm!!. I haven't shot in very cold climates, so my thoughts on colder air are untested. But even shooting out the right window (where the air intake is on my land rover and heat comes out the engine) can cause softer shots on cold days. Then on hot days, I have to be careful shooting across the bonnet. Yes, it seems the faster glass fares much better. Especially on the low megapixel pro bodies (with large pixels) I am fairly confident that my combination of 400 f2.8 and TC's would be better on an R6 than the R5 provided I didn't have to crop because the R5 is diffraction limited by its small pixels.

Tnx for doing this Will. I'm impressed that the defocus front with 1.4x is the same speed as the naked. So the lesson maybe just get your lens at its widest (if it a zoom) at the start of a focus sequence. mistakenly In general I cannot stomach the defocus behind times with either 1.4 or 2x. I think Canon has been fooling us in saying with 1.4x you loose 25% of the AF speed and with 2x 50%. They probably were only referring to the defocus in front component.To be technically correct but meaningless in real use. In general I had hard time keeping up with fast moving subjects even with the 1.4x on the 300 MII f/2.8, the 400 MI f/2/8, and the 100-400 MII. The camera just couldn't lock and keep AF fast enough to give me the 10 fps that it could shoot in theory. The 2x is even more of a struggle and I only dare use it on the 300 f/2.8 for moving subjects. I do not know how fast are these on a DSLR maybe you can try it on your 7DII but my hypothesis is that the AF times haven't got much faster in the R5 due to the superior AF, processors, or battery. I think the real bottleneck is the focusing mechanism inside the lens, the need to confirm, and micro-adjust before taking each shot. So my hope that these times could improve with an R5 are evaporating. I would be grateful if you could repeat the test/do some comparative with the 7DII and posted the results so to have a basis for comparison. Tnx in advance and carry on the good work. For the record Nikon does 1.4, 1.7, and 2x. We in the Canon world do not het the 1.7 which is a bummer I think (I wish Canon or a third party would do that) cause 2x is sometimes too much.

Hi Dimitris, thanks for watching and the many comments and helpful replies. Yes, it was interesting to note the differences and also how different the results were at different focal lengths (using the zoom). I wanted to give a comparison with a DSLR but my 7D2 is in for repairs. I guess I could have tried the 5D3 (obviously not stacked though). I would also like to try the AF speed at different exposures, I feel subjectively, the the R5 works better with a bright evf. The AF will feel better the more distant the subject is too. It was just a few metres away and heavily defocused. So many variables to work through and I am definitely not a testing type personality! For big animals at reasonable distances, they all work well enough. For the small close, fast stuff - that's the difficulty. I saw some anecdotal comments saying the R5 was slower with converters than the DSLR's - so I'd like to check.
@dimitristsagdis7340
@dimitristsagdis7340 3 жыл бұрын
@@WillGoodlet I agree that distance is key cause if you are more than 10 meters; then it is infinity :-) And subject size and speed does matter. I have greater success with my young daughters running around, even towards me than fruit bats or seagulls at longer distances even when they move parallel to the sensor. This is anecdotal of course. Also for the DSLR you have to take into account the lens native aperture. The 100-400 with 1.4x is f/8 so you are pushing the AF limits on most DSLRs (e.g. the 6D will not AF, 7DMII will only centre point focus). Which is different with the f/2.8 primes or zooms which become f/4 and can use more focus points and in general allow more light. Bummer for your 7DII. I hope you get it back in good nick and able to do some such tests and in longer distances. Concerning the R5 with converters I suppose it will also make a major difference as to which Gen lens and converter is used. The older MI Gen lenses and MI+II extenders tend not to work as well according to various reports I've come across. Tnx once again (and for welcoming my commentary).

The 1.4x stays connected to my 600II 99.9% of the time. I think I've used the 2x more now with the R5 than I ever did with my DSLRs. Two things stood out to me with the R5 mirrorless camera...the ability to focus down to f22 and more importantly we no longer have to Micro AF our lenses to each DSLR camera. Those two things were the game changer for me in my decision to go with a mirrorless camera. With the great high ISO capabilities those Canon 600/800 f11 lenses will be a good choice for someone who wants a long prime for cheap. I believe those will be "sleeper" lenses and great for those areas with lots of really bright daylight, such as Africa, Arizona, Florida and Texas, just to name a few. Hi Will, this was exactly what I have been wondering about as I take my time waiting to buy an R5. Should I spend the money on a 2X converter which would give f11 at 800mm on the 100-400 or spend the money on the RF 800mm f11 lens instead. I have the 1.4X III already. It appears that using the 2X you would get full frame AF instead of just the center portion as with the RF800. As always, a great helpful video.

Hi Peter, it's tricky to answer because I have never tried the 800 F11. I'd be surprised if the 800 wasn't sharper and probably quicker to focus but it is obviously far less versatile than the 100-400 with TC's Is it a one or the other decision? I'd be tempted to keep the 100-400 and add the 800 to the kit. Or maybe rent a 2x teleconverter and try it out first. If you like the results you can stick with it? My first rule of thumb has always been, if I am constantly having to use a converter then I should buy a longer lens. My second rule is only ever use a converter on a prime lens and never on a zoom. However, with the great improvements in lenses in general and zoms in particular I have found that using a converter on the new Canon 100-400 to be acceptable. The image quality is very good though still not as good as the native lens. The other downfall of course is the loss of light and trying to photograph badgers at dusk in Wales requires every stop of light I can get.

Hi Robert, good rules :) I'd agree generally but went a slightly different tack. I shoot large mammals and birds, and to be honest mostly birds at the moment. But the 400 f2.8 with the TC's is very versatile because I get stellar shots of mammals and can get decent shots of birds (not as good as a native 600 but still pretty good). If I chose the 600 for the birds, it would be harder to shoot the mammals and get the desired depth of field and wider field of view. I'd have to be much further back to frame them. Obviously, I should own both lenses!! :) I've been wondering recently if I should pick up one of the 150-600's in preference to the 100-400. Not sure what to do. Plus you have the benefit of the large aperture when needed. Re the 100-600 I too have given that a bit of thought but to be honest the Canon 1-400 is sooooo good that I would be very loathe to part with it. I do have an acquaintance who owns the sigma 150-600 sport lens so I should give it a try some time. With the variety of wildlife you shoot I reckon you have a good set up. Red deer are the biggest thing I shoot over here and that is only occasionally so the longer lenses get used more. I have been extremely fortunate in having a Canon 800 on almost permanent loan so that and the 100-400 make a pretty good set up. Hi Andrew, thanks for watching and commenting and yes, it's a complex choice. I think the part that I misunderstood before researching more was that the camera body plays a very important role in this. In my case, I always thought that it was purely a lens decision and I could slap any old camera on it. That's not true, the larger pixel cameras, like your 5D2 should fare better in theory. BUT you have to then throw in the clever design of AA filters and microlenses etc... that have moved on and delayed the effects of diffraction. I think it's well worth making the choice of lens, TC and camera all at the same time because the lens will behave differently on, for example, my 5D3 and my 7D2 - and probably the R5, I want to test them all out soon and compare them.

Because I don't have the EF 100-400mm I will most likely buy the RF 100-500mm at next spring. I haven't yet desided if I will buy 1,4x TC for it. I read that 100-500mm is f/6,3 at 472mm, so with 1,4x TC 660mm f/8,8. R5's DLA limit is ~f/8,2 and it takes "full effect" when the airy disc from the diffraction reach 3x pixel diameter at f/9,8. But without testing it's hard to tell if/how much the 1,4x TC would improve the resolving power compared to cropping with native 500mm stopped to f/8 (for close to maximum sharpness / micro contrast) 🤔. If the difference isn't that big I would prefer more compact and simple configuration. Especially because the 100-500mm can't be closed (even for transport) below 300mm (420mm with TC) when the TC is in place ☹️. Somehow this detail gives me a feeling that Canon didn't really intend it to be used with TCs. Maybe they have planned the 200-800mm f/6 - f/8,5 lens described in their patent to give the more practical solution for longer reach requirements (link below). But I would prefer faster, closer focusing 140-700mm ~f/4,5 - f/7,5 instead... cameratimes.org/patent-canon-rf-200-800mm-f-6-8-5-lens/

Will: I have an new R5 (leaving my trusty 7D Mark II) coupled with the new RF 100-500mm lens, and 2X extender. I have a few older Off brand batteries which I have always used with good results on the 7D Mark II. So the issue is with the R5 using the non-Canon batteries ( all of which had higher Mah and Whr ratings than Canon). When they are plugged into the camera all appears OK but the R5 immediately reduces its mechanical maximum shooting speed to 7fps. The electronic mode still works fine at 20fps. When I use the older Canon brand battery LP-E6n there is no problem. Would this be another move by Canon to sell their batteries and arbitrarily hamstring other battery brands? On another matter I have found a bug with all focus modes when at the 1000mm distance it most always locks on background or surrounding areas and refuses to find the bird directly in front of it until I work the manual focus ring (impossible to use in reality with birds-in-flight). This is a real problem when I shoot mostly birds-in-flight at the greater distance as I always did with the 7D MarkII and the 150-600mm Tamron lens. Any thoughts or experience with this?

Hi Larry, to my knowledge off brand batteries have always been a bit of a risk with Canon. I do use them as well as camera accessories are so expensive in SA. A friend of mine's Hahnel battery caught fire inside his 1D Mark IV and I've also had some issues with the 70D using them. At the moment I do use 3rd party batteries and just accept the reduced frame rate. If I want fast mechanical, I just need to make sure I've got a fully charged NH battery or a couple of 6N's in the battery grip. As you say, electronic is rarely affected and I often use it as a preferred option too. Ive been getting a few emails about background lock and tried to reproduce it today on the R5. I do also get the problem, but it seems a fairly normal consequence of contrast AF on the mirrorless cameras - similar to focus using Live view on the DSLR's? I had similar problems when testing the Olympus and AF was always one of the largest issues for me moving to Mirrorless. I did fiddle with the AF cases and I find that most of the time I am able to focus on BIF quite well, I haven't really noted this as a big problem so far. I don't know if that means I am having a lucky escape, or perhaps focusing in brighter or more contrasty subjects? Either way once I can get out of the house again (SA is in a bad way re covid) I will try it out and report back to you.

Certainly on the Sony system the 1.4TC has no significant impact on the lens applied! Obviously with less light coming into the camera there is a slight reduction in auto focus capability ! Quality is still exceptional and the extra reach is very useful particularly in good light. Top make lens with a native converter usual work exceptionally well!

Interesting as always. My old rig was a Canon 7DMii with the Sigma 60-600mm Sport that I would occasionally pair with a Sigma 1.4TC. In most cases, I found the results a little too soft for my liking when using the 1.4TC. Moving over to the R5 reduced my effective reach with the 60-600mm but autofocus was uniformly sharper. So I experimented again with the 1.4 TC, 60-600mm on top of an adaptor affixed to the R5. The 1.4TC gave me back the effective reach and although there was a little softness, the image overall was better than the 7DMii without the TC. I assume that is because of the autofocus superiority of the R5, but I am more inclined to use the TC more frequently now and I am very please with all of the combinations in the new rig. The addition of a robust EyeAF makes this setup unbeatable for me. Thanks

The main culprit is the sensor of the 7DII (I have it and I know), high pixel density/small pixels you are asking too much with the 1.4x on a zoom lens. This is why it looks better on the R5.

@@bernfar82 Tnx - when you say you do not see an advantage, you mean that with cropping in post you get the same result in IQ as if you had used the 1.4x? If so then the main difference will be when you zoom in or print large. I like to watch my photos on a large TV screen and it shows the 1.4x allows you to retain more pixels. If you print small or see the pictures on a laptop maybe there is no difference.

I haven't used the Nikon of course, but if it is anything like my Canon 300 f2.8 - and I am sure it is (my favourite lens of all time) it should take TC's really well. I often shot mine with a 1.4TC, which was all I had at the time and it delivered superb images.

Will you be shooting moving or stationary subjects and in a lot or little light. 1.7x will cut 1.5 stops of light vs the 2 of the 2x and the 1 of the 1.4x. And the AF speed will be roughly between their respective AF speeds. IQ the same. Do you have any extenders or experience with them? Are you happy with the results you get so far?

Hi, they have improved a lot during during the last decade. I think the first really good ones were Canon EF III models. Of course they are not as good as having native lenses, though. But just imagine the difference in expenses and weight between having: 600mm f/4, 800mm f/5,6 and 1200mm f/8 or just a 600mm with 1,4x and 2x TCs...😅 Based on reasonably reliable rumours Canon is releasing the following RF-mount primes during 2021: 400mm f/2,8 500mm f/4 600mm f/4 800mm f/5,6 1200mm f/8 So if someone has the cash, extra camera bodies and truck or boat - no need for TCs 😂.

@@tkermi Converters have always been available for decades. After I watched this video I decided to look about today's market place. Name brands like Nikon, Canon, etc seem way over priced and their reviews are pretty much a mixed bag of opinions. Cheap ones make good paper weights but not for me. If the opportunity comes to try out a Nikon 1.4 or 1.7 I'll be fair and give them a test on my Nikkor 80-400. I'd rather go without than accept poor imaging on my D810.

@@b_cn_u1027 Yes, I know that TCs have been around for a long time. I just wrote that the models made (by name brands) during the last decade (or 5 years) have been higher quality than earlier models. You get the best performance from TCs when used with a sharp, fast prime and with those the savings are also most notable (lenses costing $10k-$15k). They work well only with the most sharp super-tele zooms (like Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM or RF 100-500mm). I think that AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR can handle 1,4x TC but it might not be sharp enough for 1,7x. The older 80-400mm model might be too soft for a TC use - at least with the reasonably high pixel density of the D810 sensor. Here is a good comparison and sample photo site with a lot of lenses, TCs and a few bodies so you can get a better idea what to expect. It includes your camera and lens model. www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx

I have the 7DII and ponder the same. You will definitely win in dynamic range, ISO-noise, fps, and AF speed n accuracy. These for me (esp. the AF) worth the upgrade. I think cropping will produce better results *than the crop sensor) plus you can shoot the R5 in crop mode and still see the full frame (no black left/right borders) in the EVF. Nonetheless, I would shoot in full frame mode so to keep a moving subject better in the frame and have more leeway in cropping in post. I'm inclined to buy the R5 just waiting a bot for stocks to build up and prices to come down; esp. as I have no immediate need for an R5. Plus there may be an R1 and R7 so would be interested to see that too. But I think R5 will be a very good all rounder (if you can deal with the extra storage/memory cards, EVF, and battery :-).

Dimitris answers it. But from my perspective shooting in relatively bright conditions, I can get good images with both cameras. You also need to factor in that I shoot large mammals and birds - so the wider field of view and relatively high resolution is very useful to me - The 7D2 still has a resolution advantage over the R5 but the wider field of view helps to frame large subjects and, as Dimitris says, keeps smaller ones visible in the viewfinder. But the R5 has significantly better noise, dynamic range and much, much better AF and handling. If you put both cameras next to me I always pick up the R5. The big question is whether it is worth the difference in price. From an image quality standpoint, I'd say no. I get good enough results over here with the 7D2 and it's only really my gear acquisition syndrome playing out regarding image quality!! Of course, a lot depends on what you do with the shots. I don't sell prints, so... But the R5 is so much better to use, and also will be far better for landscape and astro (which is also something i do) and, significantly for me - video. Making YT videos - the mirrorless is a no brainer.

Using a TC is like spending a set amount of money. The more you start with the more you have left. So a pocket full of prime leaves you more IQ at the end than one full of zoom. The new(ish) Sony 400/2.8 and 600/4 show little IQ loss and AF speed loss with either the 1.4xTC or the 2xTC. At a guess they were designed to work together.
