Glad to have found this. Thank you. I do not agree with all that James writes, especially in his later writings, but he always inspires to me think deeply about what I believe and how to live my life.

Grover Gardner is one of the greatest narrators extant, Will Durant's THE STORY OF PHILOSOPHY is a great introduction for beginners.

I have this hope that with his "last sentences" ending with, "farewell", it was perhaps a nod to the way Seneca ended his "moral letters".

Mr. Wil Durant truly holds high William James body of work, yet I feel he has not grasped the working process to James in depth nature of truth. This following statement does not take away from James 'knowings', although it does in point show Will Durant's need to know to understand. ...the feeble membrane of its' mother...metaphysics? The last book 'The Varieties of Religious Experience', published in 1903 after his death brings into focus William James aetheric refinement of distillment the fine ethers of the rarified mind's eye. William James flows comfortably with and within the streaming fluidity of the expansive consciousness, delivering as an innate, universal motherbirth nature of its' Oneness. Be as the river Current brings The divine waters Upon the deep Into welcome well Of curiousity's learned knowing Light dawns on those Who dwell near mystic musing Where ripples vibrate The part and the whole To the one who abides Down by the river.
