Some of Shakespeare's plays have been re-interpreted by two wonderful Australian writers. John Marsden wrote a novel called "Hamlet" in which he depicted Hamlet and Ophelia as two teenagers, desperately in love but at sea within a world of troubles, namely the court of Denmark with all its tensions and intrigues. Jackie French re-wrote the story in her book, "Ophelia, Queen of Denmark." She showed the way that women were influencing the outcomes behind the scenes and also re-interpreted the death of the King in an interesting way. She also wrote, "I am Juliet" focusing on Juliet's experience of the being in love with Romeo. Her book about Macbeth is fascinating. She is critical of Shakespeare for not sticking to the historical facts in his play about Macbeth but Shakespeare had to take account of the fact that he could be hung, drawn and quartered if the dictator, Queen Elizabeth 1, was in any way threatened. Elizabeth had learnt ruthlessness from her father who had executed her mother. That is probably why Shakespeare depicted Richard III as being a murderous tyrant. Shakespeare had to explain away why the crown had not been passed down through inheritance, an awkward fact because it really meant that Elizabeth 1 was not the legitimate queen, a fact he carefully glossed over. (It also means that Elizabeth II is not a legitimate queen.) It is surprising in this day and age that royal families still choose the next royal by means of inheritance. Most other jobs require qualifications and a carefully written job application and a job interview, rather than just saying, "Mum, has the job so I expect to get the crown." As it is, an entire family is subjected to endless scrutiny and lifetimes on display because one member of that family is forced to be a monarch.

Before you watch, inform yourselves about the authorship question. There is two persons one with the name and one who wrote the plays don’t mix them up. The man with the name is like Mickey Mouse, he got his Disneyland called Stratford on Avon and there they show you five houses that has nothing to do with the author or the man named Shakespeare. It’s all about money, lots of money, hundreds of millions of pounds. The plays are fantastic but don’t believe the man you think wrote them, he didn’t.

Baby William also died. The real playwriter was Italian born. Michaelangello de Crollalanza (literally: crolla + lanza = shake + spear) was the real Shakespeare. The Stratford parents were actually his aunt and uncle. He took the name of his deceased cousin. So the true birthdate of him is unknown.
