What a harmony:a British composer's splendid music against the background of a Russian painter's landscape!William Walton (died in 90s) & Igor Avramenko (he is 46)have met in the space of KZfaq so unexpectedly! For the admirers of I.Avramenko it's a fact, indeed. One can watch the tiny house near the calm sea for a long time, without music as well,so attractive the summer landscape is,but the 2 works of 2 arts have agreed here so well, that the author of the idea should be praised loudly 3 times!:)

Two movements of tedious note spinning; an exquisitely inward slow movement; a pleasingly jolly finale. As so often, Walton is all over the place in quality. tstsullivan et al.: There's no need to bash Ian Fraser as though he insulted your mother. He has one view, you have yours. Take it easy.

Your own comment on this quartet is pretty opinionated and dismissive too. Maybe look to your own mode of expression before offering others advice.

Walton entered a downward spiral after the First Symphony which he was never able fully to break out of, though this is brave attempt. Not helped by the fact that he had to become a propaganda composer during WWII. The final movt just doesn't come up to scratch, seems flashy and superficial somehow. A lot of the rest is backward looking also.

totally disagree...his patriotic and film music is first-rate. and what about the violin concerto, Troilus and Cressida, Johannesburg Festival overture and Varii Capricci, to name only a few. For me, Walton was a consistently inspired composer and Im sorry you cant see that.

+Ian Fraser Completely disagree. I think your taste in this area is poles apart from most followers of Walton.

Such nonsense, the british critical establishment turned on him when he refused to embrace inaccessibility. His last string concerto, for cello, by far the best of the three, was derided stupidly. The 2nd symphony is better than the first as well. The term 'backward-looking' gives you away. Walton was always inward-looking.

Inane comment. This is a first-rate quartet, the second symphony is a fine piece, I have taken to the violin sonata lately as an important addition to the 20th century repertoire.

@@tstsullivanThe original comment is over the top, but so are some of these reactions: the patriotic music isn’t first rate and the 2nd symphony isn’t as good as the 1st. But yes the violin and cello concertos are excellent pieces.
