Willie Jackson: Manurewa Marae allegations, Māori parliament | Q+A 2024

Q+A with Jack Tame

21 күн бұрын

Willie Jackson - co-chair of Labour's Māori Caucus - discusses the party's place among Māori voters amid Te Pāti Māori's highly-visible campaigns and why Labour doesn't support a separate Māori Parliament.
Jackson also discusses what he's heard within his circles about what's happened at Auckland's Manurewa Marae.
Multiple enquiries are underway into claims that Manurewa Marae misused census data to help Te Pāti Māori's 2023 election campaign. John Tamihere, the party's president and Waipareira Trust CEO, strongly denies the allegations.
Join Jack Tame and the Q+A team and find the answers to the questions that matter. Made with the support of NZ on Air.

The list of 13 drugs was from a report by the Cancel Control Agency in 2022 and contained drugs used in other countries but not in New Zealand. In some very lazy campaigning, National used the list to win votes. The list contains 5 drugs that are not of interest to any clinician and others that have been superseded. Any new drug finding should be reviewed with current information. A party or elected government shouldn't choose what drugs to fund, Pharmac should. Politicizing pharmacological decisions is crazy and cruel IMO.

Always fascinating to watch Jack interview Willie like this. Willie occupies a unique position in NZ politics. One of the last Maori Labour MPs who survived the sackings of the last couple of years, he's increasingly having to pick up more of the slack. He's squeezing himself harder as he both ra-ra-s the growing Maori identitarian movement while simultaneously slavishly towing the establishment party line. Every interview is tragic and hilarious. There's that breathing in through the teeth to relieve stress. There's that performative laugh that fails to mask his hostility when under pressure. We get to watch him wriggle with denials, attacks and self-contradictions into a diminishingly tiny crevice.

In this interview Willie was getting sidetracked with trying to point out National broke their promise on cancer drugs because they haven't done it in the first six months. As long as they find funding for these drugs sometime while they are in office they will keep their promise. The Labour govt didn't provide the very same cancer drugs in 6 years (this is hippocratic) and achieved nothing, they didn't build homes, they printed money they didn't have and created massive generational debt and inflation, they created huge societal divisions, they centralised more power and authority than any other govt before, every major portfolio saw their metrics worsen while employing 40% more people for less results while we tax payers are paying their wages (and yours) and to then suggest they [Labour} did more than any other govt in the last 20 years, well Willie if a severe spanking at the polls was not enough to snap you out of your previous delusions then I think there is little hope of you ever being in charge again.

@@shauntempley9757 If you wanna play the race card about my right to be here... My Great Great Grandfather is a Rangatira of Rarawa Tribe in Mitimiti in the Hokianga. I say is... because although he has long passed into eternity, he was wise enough to know that we are ALL just passing through to another place.... and we are stewards of the land. We do not possess infinitum. If anything we possess it by the grace of God (Atua) He (Atama Paparangi) lives on in another realm with his Saviour Christ Jesus (Karaiti) who he and our whole Iwi accepted. It was not just for the sake of literacy... or some kind of coercion. He saw the Good News for what it was... and understood the God of the Bible as one his people already had concept of in the form of Animism. But change comes with greater understanding and revelation. It also allowed us to lay aside some very unsavory practices. But being stewards of the land, we should also understand that change comes as it did for Maori through conquest or immigration or treaty. There are very people groups throughout the earth that are the original occupiers of any given land. I have the Whakapapa if that is a necessity of qualification. But even though I was born here, which in itself is a birthright, I will not go back to the separatist tribalism of the past that is promoted by Te Pati Maori. We were killing one another with tribal divisions of our own. We don't need yet another separation with either Pakeha... or other races, people who were born here, and have nowhere else to go. Sir Apirana Ngata, Sir Maui Pomare and Sir Peter Buck saw the Treaty of Waitangi as a uniting document, not a separatist document... "One nation, one people, closely knit people, a people of singular contentment, a people of a sense of trust and mission... above all we must work together." Sir Peter Buck. This is my nation and my people. I won't disenfranchised by people who do represent the hard won peace and unity of what the Treaty REALLY represents. There are to be no privileged race. @@haweavivian48 That is immaterial. You still do not have the right to change that document because you do not want to do what it says. Anymore than you have the right to continue to do what has been done to undermine it. Your fear that we will do to you what was done to us is your problem, and a fear that is common for every white people that dominates others. If you are that ashamed of a nation that has the only document in world history that established a nation by Treaty, with terms you despise, then what does that say about you wanting to remove it, and join the rest that don't, and risk permanent war with those that still live here? I do not want to die an old man with my Maori people going Hamas or IRA in response to this happening in a total war to take full control of the nation, and expel or kill off everyone not Maori.

@@jemma_19988 No, democracy is underpinned by that document. How many times do you have to be told, remove Te Tiriti, your rights go to. Maori are the sovereign people. Deal with it. You do not like that, then that is your problem.

He’s right about what the treaty means, yet what is Willie Jackson’s problem with thinking he needs to talk as fast and talk over Jack when Jack is doing follow up questions? He should listen to Chloe. Listen to the question. Pause. Confirm their question. Then friggin answer it. Then stop friggin talking and listen to Jacks follow up question.

I like what Willie said about the heat going on Maori, when equal heat should be spent on political lobbyists and those who fund Act, NZ First? Also like he gives voice to not just Maori, but those who are disabled and less well off. As some of the comments indicate, there's a bunch of disaffected people in NZ who find Maori easy targets, naive about how their political masters Seymour and Peters play them for their own ends, who think that people like Tame share or have any respect for racist attitudes or comments, mistakenly believe fair but hard questions are patsy.
