I interviewed Willie Mays in 1984 and found him very introspective on the aspects of his 22-year career that endeared him to the fans, including his catch off Vic Wertz in the 1954 World Series.

Without a doubt, the greatest all-around baseball player: Willie Mays.

Don Mueller beat out Mays for 1954 batting title by taking the averages out to 4 places. Mueller an excellent ballplayer.

Wow - amazing what time does to the memory. Checked the stats and that year 1954, Mays finished at .345 and Mueller second at .342. Where the h did I get that 4 decimal places story? I've been telling it for years. Oh well, my Mueller comment stands - excellent ballplayer.

George Will wrote a book about baseball (Men at Work) and he asked everyone he interviewed who was the best player and best pitcher they ever saw. Many people answered, "Do you mean besides Mays and Koufax?"

Campanella and Robinson weren't too pleased (at 2:40) about that call at home on Mays's inside-the-park home run.

Excellent interview. Thanks for sharing. BTW, Giant's announcer Russ Hodges, who was in the booth with Jack Brickhouse, who called the play, added, "He's been doing that all year."

As I recall, a reporter asked Monte Irvin, who was playing right field, what he thought when Wertz hit that drive. Irvin said "Wille gets that ball".

Leo white and Mays black. Why don’t we honor the good things that happen in life? They had real respect for each other and helped each other for the greater good. In retrospect: humanity!

Remember, it was Leo who woke up the Dodgers and read them the riot act when some threatened to strike over Jackie.
