Its s shame that some species of willow are short lived, although at least its easy to replace them with cuttings. Yes it can be a lot of work, It usually takes me one long day or two short days each year to keep them pruned, although all the branches that come off makes it worthwhile as they are so useful in the garden.

Use the cutting from that tree and grow a bunch of new one and your timer will reset. Willow seem will live forever through propagation

@@lionolee5480 yes that's true, even a very old weak tree can provide good cutting material which will grow like a young tree once planted.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the update. Yes both of those facts are correct, although I think it's only a few varieties of willow that are used as medicine. Yes I think if the wood chips are used as mulch it could help cuttings to take root or help newly planted plants to establish their roots more quickly. They are such amazing trees, especially their ability to recover from pruning, make sure you carefully select the correct type of willow for your garden. Some willow trees are huge and will take over most gardens, where as others are small trees or shrubs which are well behaved and stay small. Also there are some which have brightly coloured stems which look great over winter.

Hopefully they will grow well for you, I find that their leaves can get a little damaged by the worst winds, but they are such vigorous plants that they come bouncing right back. They still grow very quickly despite our cool summers and so should do well in Orkney.

This variety is probably more like a tree, there are hundreds of different species of willows some are tiny shrubs less than 1 foot tall and others are giant trees over 100 feet tall. There are a lot in between which are somewhere between a tree and a shrub, this one of those as it only grow to about 20 feet tall. Pussy willow is a vague description of various willow species which have nice catkins, so my willow could be called this although it's usually the smaller willows that are known as pussy willow. Yes pollarded is the correct spelling, a pollard is a tree which is pruned back to the same part of the trunk or branches (usually 3ft up or higher on the tree) on a regular interval to keep the tree small and also to encourage long straight branches. A coppice is similar but the tree is cut close to the ground. This was done a lot with willows in the past so that straight branches could be grown for baskets and fencing. I don't know the exact variety of mine, but it's a hybrid willow with the species Salix viminalis (osier willow) as one of its parents. As a hybrid willow it grow a lot faster than most willows, it is also good for wildlife, especially insects. This variety is often used for baskets as the stems are very long and flexible. There are also some similar species with bright yellow or red stems.

It's a very fast growing willow, it gets to full height in a few years, but then doesn't grow fast again unless it's cut, maximum height is only around 8m.

Some willow species can be very bad, especially their roots. Choosing the right species is key as there are many small willows which are well behaved and can be grown in small gardens. This variety is a hybrid using Salix viminalis as one of the parents and so only grows about 20 feet tall despite it's rapid growth. Although at 20 feet it's best suited to large gardens.
