I built my tire carrier using the front axle spindle bolted to the tire carrier, bearings, hub and drive flange. That way I had the extra parts, especially the bearings. And the spare did rotate. Kinda funny.

I did a bumper similar to that , it was 3x5x1/4 in thick tubing and used 5/8 plate for the mounts to the frame. The 5/8 plate I brought through the bumper tube was the clevis mounts for my recovery points with a 2” receiver hitch. It worked out very well and strong as hell. It was on a 1967 Jeep J3000 truck. I towed a 30’ trainer with a 43 gpw and a 73 J4000 on it and the truck and hitch never batted an eye at it. Very nice build

You do some fine fabrication, young man. I found your channel after deciding to get back into Jeeps after about 35-40 years without one. I look back on some of the things I used to do tweaking Jeeps and I wonder how I did it. I suspect you’ll look back one day and appreciate the energy you spent as a young man as well. Back in the mid 70's my Dad built a rear bumper/spare tire carrier/gas can holder. It was on our 1969 Jeep CJ-5 The Jeep had the factory 10 gal. tank under the driver's seat and we found at a swap meet an aftermarket 10 gal. tank that lived between the rear frame rails. The carrier had the spare mounted in the middle like yours but the gas cans where mounted on either side of the spare so when you looked at the Jeep from the back you saw the narrow side of the gas can. With this setup the Jeep could hold 30 gals. of gas.

@@SevenBarSalvage Yeah it was. And to top it off the Jeep had the factory installed Buick 225 V-6 with a Warn Over Drive. It was what I learned to drive a standard transmission on and took my drivers lic. test in and somehow scored 100%. My high school friends and I had a lot of good times in that Jeep sadly the Jeep and some of those friends are no longer with us.

I used their kit on my TJ, I set it up so the clamp is pulling down and in at the same time to the swing arm is really jammed into the poly stop block. I also put bumpers on the tire carrier so they would contact the tailgate when latched. Everything locks together with a little preload on it and the whole thing is rock solid. Zero wiggle on the freeway or the Rubicon and it still opens easy with no drama.

Be careful with that welded on hub, the cast hubs get brittle when you weld it and can break off on hard bumps. I did the same thing and lost my spare tire on the highway. Maybe run a supporting rod from the steel frame to the back of one of the steel wheel studs? Your bubba bends came out really nice!

The Jerry can of Petrol is place on the top of the hood and make bracket to hold the jerry can. The oldest Jeep that you have is where the fuel is gravity fed. Yep it is original Like Kaiser-Willys where Overland is sold to R&R company and converted to Juan manufactory of Windsor engined jeep wagons shorty wheel base Quad. In Southeast Asia, he made the tubular unit called spare tire holder swing sideways. With his welding elbow and straight tubes all together without using the bender so he had many different pipe angle 45 degree and 90 degree and 20 degree elbow. It was why he build nice looking spare tire holder. The tube bender can also carries the pipe expanders it depends the set.

The hole saw for add the spindle hinge of your spare tire holder to the rear bumper. Naw, it needs acetylene and oxygen tanks for making a hole for the spindle to to the work of the rear bumper. The acetylene is more expensive than Mapp Gas 20 Cubic foot. Use the Mapp gas and red glow the rear bumper to make a hole on the top. Then blow oygen fast balst blow then it cuts - it makes hole in one second after prep it with blue torch that made the rear bumper red glow about 15 second but with Mapp gas about 30 sec. Because plasm cutter for thick gauge will take like 2 min or 3 min to cut the hole. The hole saw does not last at all. You are a welder not a sawyer. The hole saw is slow like 5 kinutes to make a hole plus they don't make it anymore called resin holding diamond zirconia grit in the hole saw. Then use a single cut round file to cut the hole into accurate hole or use the burr bit whetstone with the unremovable Campbell-Hausfeld shank and attach to hi-speed drill's chuck. Thank you.

That is so well thought out! i just bought '52 Willys. once i get it running, i will need to make a spare tire rack. only problem mounting spare at the rear might block rear sight? what about have it mount on the right rear side, would it block the right vision and offset the turning balance when rounding the corner? of course I know turning any corner requires slower speed. i have seen tire mount on the rear side, but not sure how the handling feel? Ty you for this insightful idea.
@SevenBarSalvage
@SevenBarSalvage Жыл бұрын
The issue I’ve run into mounting it on the side is if you run bigger tires that stick out you have to space out the spare from the body and it creates a lot of leverage on the corner of your Jeep. Stock tires shouldn’t be a problem. Thank you!

@@SevenBarSalvage cool thank you. I have a 1969 cj5. The previous owner put in a custom tank in the rear but it is kinda jimmy rigged. I was thinking of putting a yj tank, that way it will match the hole cut in the body. Also have to do the seat notch, so thank you for doing that and making videos for all of us to see how to do it. God bless you and yours.

That’s a great video. I’m going to borrow some of your ideas. Can you tell me what brand and model of plasma cutter you are using? Do you like it? I’m shopping for one now. Looking for recommendations. Thanks.

Looks awesome, I think I will try to make one for my CJ along with a jerry can holder. On the contrary, what size wheels and tries are you having in this video?

I am working on my 53 3B. What gas tank are you using. I have been looking, measuring various tanks to mount in the rear. Planning to incorporate the swing away tire mount also.

It’s a cj5 15 gallon tank. I’m running a 1” body lift and 1.75” over stock lift and it’s snug but it looks like it will clear the rear axle. I have 2 videos on the install! Thank you for watching!

@@SevenBarSalvage I’ve had in mind my own ideas of building some but yours looks far better than what I had in mind…I’ve got a 2A that I’m building and don’t think I’ve missed a single video of yours unless you did one on the sliders… truly appreciate your response and any help on the drawing or link to it…might be another good piece of content for you
