Love to know what the V material magic actually is. I see they use some cable risers but the cable is allowed to touch the floor at the midpoint. Is this non-consequential or an oversight?

Also love that my $3,300 speakers employ the same "Magical" 7" midrange driver that Wilson uses. By Scanspeak. Of course the Wilson version is built to Wilsons specs as opposed to stock "crappy" specs scan speak offers. haha

Time alignment? When we listen to live music, do the musicians time align the sound to the audience? Or time alignment is used to adjust to different rooms?

Full range speakers like these Wilsons that go down into the 20's must present challenges both to the designers AND end users because IMHO, the best place in the listing room for your mids and highs may not NECESSARILY be the ideal place for deep bass which is why I'm a fan of PROPERLY setting up 2 very high quality subs in "stereo" to blend really well with your "smaller" speakers that may "only" reach down into the 40's or 30's - albeit this set up may not be able to scale in volume in quite the same way these huge full range Wilson speakers might do in a large room, I'd bet they'd give the Wilsons a run for their money in smaller to mid size rooms. An example might be a pair of Dynaudio Heritage Specials or Confidence 20 stand-mount speakers in tandem with 2 Dynaudio Sub 6 subwoofers - quality in spades and NOT cheap by any means but way WAY less expensive than an Alexia V and a wee FRACTION of the XVX's !! Happy listing everyone !!

you're fantasizing that a bookshelf speaker with subs will challenge the sound of the Wilson's? I have the DAW's (without using a sub) and to compare the sound to Heritage speakers is like comparing a VW Bug to a Porsche..Yes they both have 4 wheels but to compare them is just as absurd.

Wilson ripped off the use of the felt on the baffles from Dunlavy and refuse to acknowledge it that's why it never gets a mention. That really is a poor show. And it doesn't make sense to do a time alignment on a non minimum phase crossover. Why do they bother ?? :(

Fraction of mm's in speaker adjustment, what happens if you move your head 2 in's? How bout motor driven drivers that follow your head movement? My GNP speakers also use felt on the baffles, but then Wilson & Gross also worked together a bit back in the 80's. So similar ideas on how to make a speaker.

Would be interesting to know the actual cost of parts. With all the innovations in ideas and materials it's still paper cone drivers in boxes. I'm ok with paper, I don't need bullet proof kevlar, (I don't have these speakers), but it's amazing how little the overall idea of speakers has changed. Sure you got electrostatic, ribbon, etc. but look at the flagship of sound reproduction.
@jakeslavin9355
@jakeslavin9355 Жыл бұрын
@@bradt.3555 Generally a speaker retails for 4-5X its cost of production. They definitely cost more than 5k to produce. The crossover parts alone may be a few thousand and the labor to make the cabinets and all the machining required is substantial. With economy of scale it might cost less but Wilson isn't selling a ton of 5 or 6 figure speakers. The drivers are off the shelf(modified off the shelf) so the cost of that could be figured out from the internet. I believe they use modified scanspeak drivers.
@bradt.3555
@bradt.3555 Жыл бұрын
@@jakeslavin9355 Yea I realize the cost of parts is considerably more than 5 grand, just wondered what it actually was. I'm sure they don't sell a ton of those. My preference in drivers is still conventional cone and dome type. Just interesting how a driver in a box can still be a top of the line item. Guess someone got it right to start.

@@bradt.3555 Yeah I think with any speaker type there are obviously pros and cons and clearly the benefits of some other technologies don't outweigh the cons. I think the magic is in the implementation and the subtle changes to common tech(better motor structure, etc). I think the reason woofers are still so common are that they are superior to every other technology for bass reproduction. Otherwise the speakers have to be massive.

I have worked in both hifi and pro audio, the overly precious description of basic engineering, I find a little offputting. The theories of speaker placement and diffraction are well known. This is nothing new, and yes, trying to voice speaker can take much time with crossover design. I think this is the type of thing that puts people off from high end audio. I have heard many Wilson audio products over the years and they sound good as many other companies also provide sonic competency.

What a load of snake oil BS in the opening advert for interconnects!!!😡 I’m calling this nonsense out and feel duty bound to do just that as a reputable audio design engineer. It’s claims like that which tar the rest of the industry with the same snake oil tar brush. If you’re going to make such claims then back them up with measurement proving that this design is AUDIBLY better than any conventional IC, and AUDIBLY more faithful to the source.signal. Lets see the source used to send a signal to a ‘scope snd compare the waveform for distortion using a conventional IC compared to the one advertised. If not, why make such claims? Wilson speakers are well engineered but insanely expensive and not aesthetically pleasing. They put me in mind of steam punk design. I don’t much care for their new skeleton style at all, messy. Great sounding no doubt. For elegance I prefer what Verity Audio are producing.
@davidbee8178

Paul C I agree with MUCH of what you are saying . . . although I'm sure you know that measurements alone are not the be all and end all of good sound, I, like you am NOT impressed with the snake oil exhibited here and Wilson has been doing that for YEARS and some people just soak it right up and spend new BMW or Mercedes money to buy them for bragging rights . . . for the price of the XVX's one can buy a LIFETIME subscription for themselves AND a couple of friends (!) to their local symphony and listen to the REAL thing :-) . . . I've heard Dynaudio speakers (as only ONE example!) that would give these guys a run for their money in a blind test ANY DAY! Happy listening Paul!

For simplicity in aesthetics and 'parts', I'm in the Martin Logan (Masterpiece series) camp. True line source, only ONE xover point, true dipolar and a very well engineered bass module that keeps up with the rounded mylar panel that runs down to 280 Hz! Excellent dynamic range with 90 DB efficiency. So, yes, I got away from boxes for my main system.🙂

@ReferenceFidelityComponents Жыл бұрын
@@garysmith8455 I can appreciate what you see in them and like DC drivers, you can forgive their failings for what they do well. The weak point with any I’ve heard has been limited off axis response…a narrow sweet spot plus I’ve not been convinced at lower volumes but that may have been partly the partnering electronics plus it was a good few years ago.
@ReferenceFidelityComponents
@ReferenceFidelityComponents Жыл бұрын
@@davidbee8178 yes, I agree with you. Measurements alone are not a panacea for predicting what something will sound like but do give an insight into how well integrated and considered a speaker design might be. I’ve heard decent measuring speakers sound dire and vice versa. With speakers one thing oft not considered is the set level measurements are made at. Some come on song only with lots of watts up them as the impedance response and phase angle at demanding frequencies dictate that and some may have perfect axial response but look like the alps off axis or have a polar waist at crossover yet look fine in axis. Understanding what to measure and how to properly interpret measurements is a must when trying to form an impression without having heard speakers. As a loudspeaker engineer, I don’t have all the answers but know that every day is a learning day.

@@ReferenceFidelityComponents Thanks for your reply. I had a friend over recently that just came from other friend's home that has a large pair of Maggies. First thing he said to me is that the sweet spot was so narrow that it was driving him nuts. Just turning his head slightly or moving just a tad to the right or left threw everything off. His reaction to the new Classic 9's was totally different. First off, the speakers are 13.5 ' apart, and we are seating 18' from them! The stereo presentation runs the width of my 3 seat sofa! He was amazed! I do NOT toe in my speakers, I let the rounded panel speak for itself straight out into the space. Toeing in any speaker tends to collapse the stereo image a bit in my experience. My room is 18x24' and there is nothing in it but sound treatment. The audio rack is low and is where you would have a coffee table. Everything at arms reach. The only gear between the speakers is the Parasound A21 amp, and that is it. My doors are always opened to anyone that can make the trip and give the system a listen. All visitors are usually very impressed because they came in with a preconceived idea of electrostatics and found something completely different much to their surprise. That includes TWO studio owners that were curious, and found out for themselves (O:
