The Wilson Staff MB and the Wilson Staff CB irons are designed for the most consistent ball-strikers, while the Wilson D9 irons are game-improvement irons that feature more forgiveness and larger clubheads.
In this video, 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell compares these three Wilson Golf Irons against one another with the help of Trackman technology.

I recently purchased a set of D9's - 6 iron thru to SW. I am a senior with a relatively low swing speed and now I can hit my 7 iron 150 yards compared to needing my old 5 iron. The extra height I get with the 7 iron Vs my old 5 iron enables me to hold the green from that distance. For the price Wilson delivers a good bang for the buck. Thanks for your great reviews. These irons are still 🔥 in 2024. I'm still playing D300s and they are phenomenal compared to my friends name brand clubs. Very interesting.

The way an iron looks at address is my #1 criteria. Been striking the Wilson Tour V6 over a year and a half. Looking at the Staff Blade now.

Great review, I have recently bought a set of the CBs (4 - PW) with Project X 6.5 shafts and they are the best set of irons I have ever played, they feel very soft and have a compact head size, other models I tested were the Titleist T100, Ping I59 and Callaway Apex TCB but I preferred the Wilson CB.

Great review! In my oppinion, Wilson is quite overlooked in general. They have some great players Irons and I have gamed a few Staff blade models. Blade model Fg62 is a fantastic playable blade that did not get any attention at all, but if you can find a used set in good condition, try it out! I think Fg62 and Mizuno MP33 are the best "modern" blades ever to be launched.

Ive just been fit for the CB, absolutely loved it during the fitting session, its a big change from my G400s but ive improved massively over the last 2 years so the G400s dont feel right anymore. There is unbelievable consistency to the CBs, not much change in spin rates, mph and only 4 yards of carry difference covering the 20 shots i hit with it.

Being older golfer I find it total nonsense to compare 7 irons with different lofts.. and then to give it a fancy name like "game improvement".. to do an honest comparison pick the D9 that has the same loft as the CB and STAFF.

That's it exactly! Customer says "I can't hit a three iron!" Golf company takes a 3 iron and writes "5 iron" on it. Customers says, "Oh, a 5! I can hit that.", and swings the "5" without fear.

If you old timers don’t like the strong lofted clubs then don’t hit them. They have their place. As your ball striking improves, you should progress out of the stronger lofted clubs

@@ryanwalters694 this went clean over your head 🤦♂️ he didn’t say anything bad about strong lofts. But you can’t compare stats of clubs different lofts. They should have had the D9 in a 8 or 9 iron as that’s more comparable. That’s the point.

No. The whole point should be to compare a 7 to a 7. Especially due to loft differences. It's made to be lower CG and spin, but launch easier for a higher handicap and get a better distance, which is where they most likely lack. Comparing to a 9 instead, a shorter club, would be useless as the launch would be a dissimilar comparison, even if "loft" is the same.

Thomas, are the D7 & D7 Forged irons still available to fill the void between the Staff blades/CB and those massive D9 irons? By the way, thanks for showcasing Wilson irons. I play the C300 Forged form a few years ago and absolutely love them. Look & feel great, quite forgiving, decent distance and towering ball flight (33* 7 iron as opposed to the D7 which is 31* I think). Cheers

With the 27° loft on the D9 aren't you just comparing an actual 5-iron with a 7 printed on to a real 7-iron? I don't like the trend for ever stronger lofts on game improvement irons. Isn't that just cheating for marketing purposes? At the end you are left with a 43°-PW and terrible gapping.

It is very strong lofted but I'm sure the CG is lower than most 5 irons too. A lot of people struggle with long irons and a good bit of that is due to length of shaft. A 4 iron at 6 iron length would be easier for most people to hit consistently. They can leave out 4 and maybe even 5 iron and go 48, 52, 56, 60 in the wedges. It's not what I would want in a setup but I can see where it helps some people. Some of those players are steep and create a lot spin too. That helps that set work well for them too.

How do you gap a bag if you are hitting 210 yard 7 irons?

Haha! You don't...that's why Thomas isn't playing them 😂. If someone with Thomas's speed wanted the D9s, we would recommend bending the lofts weaker so that the bag can be gapped more adequately.

I have the D7 forged but am a big hitter still new to the game. I find I hit them too far like 220m carry for 5 iron am a 10 hcp now should I be looking at a blade? My driver carry is around 270m. Cheers

What type of irons would you recommend to someone who has a bunch of speed (100-105 7i) but is a mid handicapper? And before I get someone saying “spend the money on lesson” I have and am currently taking lessons and practicing frequently.

Thanks for the comment Bryce! We get this question a lot and we typically default to game-improvement type or players-distance irons for anyone who isn't a consistent ball striker. Those types of irons offer the forgiveness needed. With that said, it's important to to make sure lofts are appropriate for someone of your speed. We would recommend retro spec, or bending the lofts weaker, in a set of game improvement or players distance irons. That way you get forgiveness in the irons without hitting the ball an outrageous distance resulting in gapping issues at the bottom of the set.

So if the landing angle is less than 45 degrees and the player needs distance do you give up some distance and go to a lower lofted club to get more spin and steeper land angle?

It’s not a players distance club at all. Wait for the d9 forged. Don’t change ball strikers clubs for your ego go somewhere else.

@@danielfrancoeur8345 you could just club up? Hit a 6 iron 30°. If you need an extra club or two buy the 3 or 4 iron for the set. I think when he said ego, he means play the loft not the iron number. Can get the club shafts resized to fit. In UK that's only a cheap service but might be expensive where you are.

So I know I’m a little late, but I am about an 18 handicap, but I strike the ball well and already hit my 7 iron about 200 yards so I don’t think the D9 would be right for me. Do you think the CBs could work for me?

Hitting a stock 7 200 yards you definitely don’t want the D9 nor the new Wilson Dynapower. Try a standard lofted Staff CB model with a fitter to help you. Hope this helps

If a D9 iron has 27 degrees loft then surely it’s a short shafted 5 iron? It doesn’t make sense that the manufacturers can simply change the loft on the heads and re number them 🤔

It's hard to find game improvement irons that have less offset. Generally golfers need the offset in this category. Would be a unique club to try and see what happens if a manufacturer committed to that design - Thomas

@@2ndswing Sure, but it has been done though. Ex. AP1's, Ping J-Spec. The Ping G4** iron and hybrid line has been moving in this direction as well. Forgiveness and distance without nearly as much offset and draw bias so it helps mid-high handicappers while promoting more ideal swing mechanics. Do players who are just starting out often come into 2nd swing to buy a set of brand new irons if they don't expect to become more serious about the game?

I currently play a wilson D9 forged series with a tensei regular shaft of 75g (hd 10) which is very pleasant but I lose a little distance would you advise me to fall back on the D9 series
