The Wimshurst machine is an electrostatic generator in the same vein of a Van de Graff but predates it by about 45 years. Instead of using a belt to create a static charge it uses contra-rotating disks with metal sectors to create the charge and Leyden jars to store the energy produced.
Plans for this machine freely available here:- steampunkworkshop.com/how-buil...
Part 1 Creating the disks and applying the metal sectors.

When you said boring, the machinist came out in me and thought you were boring a hole in it. Great job on the hole cutting

As long as the Plexi sheet is cut square so you can find the center easily, you can make a circular cutting with a nail and a string.

First off, great videos...the background music for the soldering montage has been hummed around my house all day hahaha. Btw if you had a mill and a rotary table, you could have banged out a little die set to punch out those foil petals. Probably would have taken longer but any excuse to make chips is the right one :-). Anyways, great work, enjoyed watching...carry on sir!

Great music !! .......Many of the old Original machines have the foil Sectors positioned 1/4" to 1/2" from the Disc edge......Don't know why the original designers did that......Somewhere I read the Equalizer Brushes should be positioned with one Side directly on top & bottom foils with opposite Equalizer Brushes positioned In between Sectors for Maximum performance.......Lately, I've heard the Collector Combs should have Only 1 sharp Needle front & rear sides for same reason......I think most of the production machines are designed for Minimum Cost over highest performance. Every Rod or Tube End or Junction should be Terminated with a 1 1/2" diameter Metallic Ball to Reduce Corona Discharge & collected Charge Leakage to Absolute minimum...... Leyden Jar Top terminals & Collection Comb support Ends should be 2" minimum Diameter.......Running it in total Darkness & Listening with mechanics Stethoscope to Identify any Leakage areas......Any Leakage reduces Electrode Ball arc distance......

I really appreciate your work and thank you very much for uploading this video, I'm building this machine and i want to know which are the diameters of the small and big ends for the aluminum pieces, thank you. greetings from mexico!

The spacing between also plays a factor in spark length.

Thanks for the Dremel router demo I should get me a Dremel drill press Using a compass takes practice lean and drag the pencil around is how I do It I think the largest part of the circle to make a line is called the Tangent ?? Now I'm Trying to remember my high school drafting It's lookin good Carry on as You where !!!

That is why I saw on a site that the bonetti machine, although the hardest to start, can produce the longest spark.

I think I've found my project for Engineering Physics. An advantage I have is I'm a machinist with access to the software and machinery to make super cool, extremely precise components. #geek

How about a drop down AC cord on opposing wraps of thin wire to hold it in place.?

I built one back in the late 50's, using 78 RPM records, worked a treat. Ended up adding an electric motor to drive it. Also I used rectangle pieces of thin sheet metal rather than elaborate shapes, easy to make long strips then cuts off pieces to size. www.shevillmathers.id.au

You should actually slow down the bit speed and increase the feed rate (speed you push it through the plastic).

It's very hard to use a compass to draw small diameter circles. Use a circle template instead.

Thats probably faster than the way I once did it by just using a board with a sharp nail going around and around until it finally broke through!

If you can find a way to keep it smooth and adhere it to the plastic it'll be fine.

I have seen one Operate hooked up like that and the spark gap acts like a speed governor, also it required more then one capacitor plate to keep it running.

u know u could have left the coating on and cut the sectors out like a stensel and the just sprayed them on with silver conducting paint ok im sorry for being an ass ill let u in on a secret super high frequency is the key and here is how u establish it (# of sectors on one disk X RPM = frequency) =3-

Excellent job! You might want to improve your draftsmanship though, doesn't suit a machinist.
