For many professional photographers, working to a brief is nothing new. But for those just starting their professional journey, the concept of working to a brief might seem a little overwhelming and intimidating.
In this video, I’m going to explain what working to a brief means, show you some examples, and help you understand the process so that you can be prepared for any situation where working to a set commercial brief is necessary.
The key to working to a brief is knowing not only how to execute the guidelines, but also how to interpret them. To help our members practice these real-life skills, I recently provided them with a very specific advertising brief to execute. This gave them an opportunity to experience what it’s like to work to a set brief, interpret mood boards, and bring to life pre-determined concepts. Here you’ll see how some of our members came very close to achieving the desired results, while others didn’t quite get it right. I discuss some of the results, explaining what would typically be expected and how changing your mindset can prepare to best deliver what your client wants.

For these relevant contents... rarely campaigning for likes or subscribers, just get straight down to business. That's very admirable, and for that you earn a load of respect. Thanks always!

one of the best Episodes, Great Explanation Karl. Could you please do an episode on the regular flash light sitting that the one need to use (why there is a MM measuring in my Flash light and what does it mean) the reason i suggested this because most of us dont have a very expensive Flash Lights. and personally I when I am watching, I see a continues light during the preparation of the shooting, but when the actual shooting start I see flash Lights, ( I ask my self, Why the hek they have a continues light then). As usual, I appreciate, and watch all your episodes, Best of Luck.

Hello Karl, your videos are excellent and professional, great admirer of your work here :) Though, I have on question which still goes on my mind watching your videos - you very often show some pieces of your work/shooting, but these pieces are quite "from some time ago" (for ex. lady in lingerie in this video). I am curious - you do not shoot any potraits at this time or you just do not have permission to use it in your videos? Thank you very much for solving this mystery for me :) Have a nice day, Karl and keep up good work :)

Yes I shoot loads of stuff but we don't (or aren't allowed) to video each client shoot, some of the other clips are from our education channel and we show whatever is appropriate to the content or subject matter of the video. Also I don't do the video editing, only the presenting and photography! :)

Unfortunately, in advertising the client doesn't want realism they want it better than real. If you shot realistic, nobody would buy the product.

Who should write the photography brief? The client or the photographer?

Shouldnt the title say "Win more REPEAT clients by understanding how to work to a photography brief"? Cause anyone can win a client, you won them before even shooting the brief because they hired you. You win more REPEAT clients by understanding how to work to a photography brief...
