No mention of spin. Underspin is helpful because it floats the ball deeper and bounces low. It's similar to a "chip and charge" mentality from tennis.

Most useful moment for me was 10:04 which shows more of a sideways address on the backhand than I normally use. These serves as illustrated are easyville. The reason I'm not using this address normally is that many players I'm up against nail the outside line with a horrific spin and I'm trying to position myself _behind_ the sudden angle change, rather than have a sharper outward bounce stretch my arm out. (Plus on some courts you have to take into account constrictions of a fence if the ball turns hard.) And then that decision followed me into the easier backhand locations, which might be a mistake. These same servers are also capable of vicious short serves with hardly any bounce that mandate a lunging forward scoop, so you can't get comfortable in any dimension.

Most courts I play in in my area , don’t have that big open space behind the back court line, you got either a fence, curtain, netting, etc… so going back farther isn’t an option especially on a high bounce serve.

I started hitting a much better second shot when instead of rushing to get up to the net, I set my feet, hit my shot with loft then got up to the net. This is such an easy area to give up points in pickleball, don't make the same mistakes I did!

I do this exactly, so it's assuring to me I'm doing the correct thing, but I have had players tell me I need to stay back with them and move up together, that I'm rushing to the kitchen. (this is coming from people who stay back to long I feel) I'm watching them in corner of my eye and slowing myself down to get to the kitchen as a team. And of course, I get hit right at the foot at times Ideas anyone? I am a 3.5-4 player.

What determines when you choose the half-volley vs the bounding return?
@stankeye
@stankeye Жыл бұрын
I believe it would be your body postition relative to where the ball bounces. As they noted do not back up (imaginary wall). A half-volley would be something bouncing very close to you that you do not hit at it's apex. The bounding return would be a ball bouncing in front of you that you could take at it's apex. If you noted Kyle was close to the base line for the half-volley drills and further back for the bounding return drills. In a game situation you would need to adjust to where the server hits it, deep or short, to decide on the type of return.
@TysonMcGuffinPickleball
@TysonMcGuffinPickleball Жыл бұрын
This is usually a style that you choose for yourself in advance. If you struggle with mobility you may choose the half volley return so you aren’t too far away from the short serves.
@spyghetti
@spyghetti Жыл бұрын
Well if I knew someone was serving short often I'd be more aggressive with getting forward and taking the ball as early as possible to chip it deep while getting to the net, but if someone is definitely hitting the ball deep near the line I'm probably not as inclined to hug the backline for setting up an aggressive move forward early. Also if the serve if often wide and I'm not in front of the ball probably harder to get to the serve, chip it back and go into a good defensive position near the kitchen, but it depends on your footwork and speed. If you are good with half volleys already and can time moving forward with chipping deep all at once... I'd do it as often as I could if they were server shallow middle or near the T. Just my amateur opinion.

Does it matter who you return the service ball too? It looks like he was returning the ball always to the server side? And also when returning the service, i noticed Kyle was placing himself towards the center line as opposed to centering himself between the middle line and outside line...
@TysonMcGuffinPickleball
@TysonMcGuffinPickleball Жыл бұрын
There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing where or who to return to. Kyle will usually “shade” to leave a bigger part of the court covered with his forehand since he prefers his forehand to his backhand.

I am trying to understand this. So a better return strategy than just rocketing it straight back is to hit a higher and slower ball to buy time to get up to the net?
@TysonMcGuffinPickleball
@TysonMcGuffinPickleball Жыл бұрын
It depends on your skill level to some degree, but most beginner/intermediate players need more time to get to the kitchen for their first volley. Hitting your returns higher and slower gives you more time to get there.

Random question: I have strained both calf muscles in the last 6 months and tweaked one last night. I stretch before I leave to play as well as when I get to the courts. I wear babalot shoes as well. Can anyone recommend anything to prevent future strains/pulls? Also, take electrolytes before playing.

scott, i little dynamic warm up is a good idea. i like hearing that you stretch prior - in pickleball we can take off for a short or wide ball on the 1st point. whereas a jogger or cyclist won't need to stretch prior to their workout. paramount - STRETCH POST WORKOUT! your muscles are at their warmest - ergo most responsive to change. think about the properties of glass and metal -- also malleable once warmed. muscles are the same, you will get the best stretch after a workout. Additionally, POST WORKOUT STRETCHING helps the lactic acid and metabolic wastes that build up during your workout to flush. shortening your recovery time and diminishing the likelyhood of injury. some sun salutations are a nice dynamic warm up, down dogs or legs up a wall pose at the end for your posterior chain AND 1/2 pigeon pose is magic for the low back with all of the twisting and rotation we do in p.ball.

I pulled my left calf muscle 2 weeks apart after playing for 3 hours at a time. Went to PT. He had me doing one footed toe raises, runners stretch with your leg behind you but push back down on your heel. You can stretch on a stair step. I take chondroiten and magnesium supplements also. Using a balance board also will help.

As a young guy that surfs, spear fishes, and plays 5.0 tennis seeing younger people playing such a clown sport shows why nato and the USA are monkeypox nations. It really is disgusting. Pickleball is great once you can’t play other sports but to turn this driveway game into something serious is so low IQ.
