In this video I am starting to work on restoring my Winchester 1895 Russian Musket lever action rifle. The rifle currently is sporterized, with shortened barrel and it will take a bit of work to make it look better and closer to the original configuration. Part of the challenge is locating missing parts, but most of them I now have on hand, and in doubles...

FWIW, Most don't realize the crescent butt on some rifles isn't meant to shoulder but rather to be placed against the arm. Useful only in the offhand position with the body at a 90 degree angle to the target, rifle parallel to the chest.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
I realize that, and I tried shooting it that way. Not comfortable at all. If shouldered, the tips of the crescent shape really hurt the shoulder too, so not comfortable that way too.

I can appreciate your excitement. Just finding a '95 Russian is a rare treat here in the U.S. Rumor is a Russian Sales outfit offered a couple thousand 1895's to an American importer but wanted something like $1000+ per rifle and the importer turned them down. The rifles supposedly remain in Russia.

You know I know it won't be returned to original, due to the barrel being chopped down when it was sporterized, but it could be an interesting take on what the Russians might of done with a carbine length rifle. I'm interested in seeing the final rifle. Are you going to re blue the rifle or have it parkerized? Or are you going to leave the metal as is?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
I will likely leave the metal as is because it is not bad. If I were to refinish it I would go for a high polish blue, as this is what it is now.

I see them come up on Gunbroker quite a bit. Not Russian contracts but in other calibers. And auction houses like Rock Island Auction have had them in a few of their regional auctions. Haven't seen too many on store shelves (or at all).

I have one of these rifles. I bought at an auction. Someone took the forend and stripper clip guides off and put a sporter forend on it but the barrel was not cut. I'm looking for the parts to restore it to original condition. Any ideas on where to look for parts?

Where did you find the rear sight? I’m working on a US (1 of 10,000) and am missing a few parts. Any tips on where to find parts would be awesome.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 5 жыл бұрын
EBay from a guy in Finland. They are ridiculously hard to find for Russian version in arshins. But check EBay, and save a search, so they notify you when parts pop up under your search

@@MosinVirus Thanks for the advise. I have one of the US stamped receiver models. I am missing a handful of parts and have been able to find all but the hammer spring steal and that ladder style rear sight. I would not have been able to do the restoration with out your videos.

Hello MosinVirus sir I recently purchased a Winchester 1895 Russian Contract. Unfortunately it has mismatched stripper clip guides. Either (2) lefts or (2) rights. I was told you made some for your rifle and might have spares laying around. I’d be willing to p@y obviously. Thank you for your time.

Great project. Really like your videos. I am a bit confused about why you keep using the terms musket and rifle interchangeably in this vid?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
I think it is because the name is Winchester 1895 musket, and I believe due to length. There was a US musket and a Russian musket. I refer to most long guns as rifles outside of shotguns. That is probably why I kept flip flopping
@MagPel1
@MagPel1 8 жыл бұрын
+MosinVirus Ah, ok. I thought the difference between a musket and a rifle was smoothbored vs rifled barrel. Great project in any case. Keep up the good work.

The metal is beautiful. It's criminal what happens to some of these old rifles at the hands of Bubba. I would LOVE to acquire one of these old Russian contract Winchesters. Are you originally from Russia. I noticed a subtle accent.

What was the length of the barrel on the rifle when you got it?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 7 жыл бұрын
Jacob Weesner 24" it seems to have been done when the rifle was sporterized. It is still 24". I did nothing to change the length.

Jacob Weesner no problem. I was speaking with someone on the forums, and it seems that shortening barrels was pretty common for sporter configurations, but ultimately I woukd really want to know why that was done (in case something was wrong with the barrel). The bore on this one is so good that I decided not to replace the barrel with a proper length one because the one I bought had a bore condition inferior to this one.

MosinVirus The only reason I can think of is either balance or to take into a stand or car, or something like that. I perused the forums where you chronicled the restoration, and didn't see the original barrel length which is why I asked here.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 7 жыл бұрын
