The U.S Military was dumb as fuck for not adopting this rifle in 1883, would have been useful during the Spanish-American War , along side the Lee Navy and the Krag-Jorgenson - also the Chinese Qing Government ordered 15,000 of these rifles + the original 1879 version in 1881 - 1885, they were used in the First Sino-Japanese War, Boxer Rebellion and some were still in use during the Second Sino-Japanese War / WW2 in Chinese nationalist / communist militia's , I believe some of them were re-chambered for a smokeless powered cartridge by that point.

I'm curious on these as to how the cartridge stop works with the mag tube in the butt, it seems to run off the trigger since you said it needs to be pulled to load the first round. Certainly different than a conventional forward mounted tube which usually just had a hook on the bottom of the lifter.

I wish there was a First Person Shooter Game set during the Spanish-American War , First Sino-Japanese War or The Boxer Rebellion , since this rifle was used in those conflicts - just imagine - Battlefield: 1898 or Medal of Honor : Japanese Assault or Call of Duty : Boxer Warfare

Hunt Showdown is set in 1895, granted it's a very alternate zombie filled timeline, but the guns are generally accurate for the time, though sometimes renamed compared to real life. Sadly no Winchester Hotchkiss, but they do have other early bolt actions like the Swiss Vetterli and the French Lebel.

But if i were to be able to bring another then a lever action Henry all day long. Load on Sunday and shoot all week long.

That left me open for some shooting today, but I need to get some stuff done around the house/outside. The weather has finally stabilized here in Illinois, so I need to take advantage of it to get things taken care of. But I am currently looking at buying 5 acres.. @theseukonnen1200
@theseukonnen1200 9 жыл бұрын
ToastyMozart Smokeless powder burns much faster, so you get much more rapid expansion and pressure spiking; which makes for a sharper sound. It's kind of like the difference in sound between popping a balloon and just letting the air out of it.
@versal339
@versal339 9 жыл бұрын
The Seukonnen Black powder burns much faster then smokeless, most of the sound is from the bullet breaking the sound barrier. With 45.70 carbine loads (405 gr. bullet 55-50grs BP around 1100 fps.) but its a great gun that you will not get to see shot very often.
@theseukonnen1200

Hugh Batesel Huh, really? I was under the impression that because black powder deflagrates while smokeless powder detonates, that meant the black powder burned more slowly.

I'd probably take a martini Henry over both of those guns, something tells me that Winchester would be awkward to reload and prone to breakage, so I'd rather have a good single shot gun, and the trap door sucks, I think a decent argument could be made for the early single shot mausers as well.
@DAKOTA56777
@DAKOTA56777 2 жыл бұрын
Awkward to reload, maybe, prone to breakage? Not really any more than any other bolt action, it's the same basic striker fire system that near every bolt action rifle in existence has used. And even if the tube mag is kinda awkward to load, you can just drop rounds in single fire exactly like a normal single shot once it's empty. Meaning you get an extra 5 round burst, and then a basically identical continuous fire over a Martini.

***** Pretty much. It's easier and faster to move the right hand from and back to the front grip/resting place than to take the left hand and move it all the way around. Plus that would lead to an awkward cocking angle.

***** Give it a try sometimes. A tip though. Make sure your right thumb is NOT over the top of the stock. The thumb has to be on the side of the rifle. I guess we can call it...bolt bite?
@Leitis_Fella
@Leitis_Fella 9 жыл бұрын
Jesse Sisolack I've tried that with a K31 once (Ian did it before in the Ross Mk.III video), and it's pretty hard considering how heavy these wood stocked rifles are (The K31 is ~9lbs). Plus the bolt bite you mention definitely is a thing. It's really awkward, and I had to shoot from the bench because the weight was an issue, and I'm not a lefty.

BigBossManBBQ actually this weapon's tube magazine is in the butt-stock not under the barrel like the Lebel, Mauser and Gras-Kropatchek(which was a copy of an Austrian design that was basically a black powder Lebel). I'm sure if the French could they would have copied it. they were infamous for pulling this trick on gun inventors of inviting them to a contest to display and demonstrate their designs and then ripping them off by copying their work without paying.
@deepsouthredneck1

I imagine if this gun was in a different clambering and the army realized firepower mattered it might have caught on. I don't really see the point in a 45-70 bolt gun in the context of that time. The Winchester 76 already had beefy cartridges and there were plenty of accurate single shots. The only application I see to this is an army gun since it would be cheaper to produce than a more complex lever gun but at that time the army was still set on single shots.
@MrReded69

dreyrugr this rifle could have won the Sudan 1885 Khartoum Relief Campaign for the British. With the magazine cut-off on, the British fighting squares could have steadily volleyed the incoming Mahdist hordes and then de-activated the cut-off and give em 4-5 rounds of rapid fire when they got within 100 yards. such a last minute shock could have broken the Mahdists.
@deepsouthredneck1
@deepsouthredneck1 9 жыл бұрын
MrReded69 I doubt it, small arms rarely play a big role on battlefield decisions like that. And if the British were to adopt a bolt action they probably would've contracted through Mauser.

Darn, Just noticed your doing this left handed. Why in the world they kept the Trapdoor is beyond me. some thing political and cost probably. Europe was way ahead at this time. Wasn't there a nice bolt action rifle invented by Paris Lee ( I believe) around this time , didn't Remington have one too?
@pyronuke4768
@pyronuke4768 8 ай бұрын
The answer to that question "why was the trapdoor kept for so long?" is quite a lot more nuanced and multi-faceted than "politicians be penny-pinchers." To oversimplify it (and trust me, this *is* oversimplification) the long-term economic and psychological effects of the Civil War had taken a serious toll on the American populous. They were really wary of investing too much into military procurement, to the point where the US armed forces effectively stagnated for the next 20 years. The stories you hear of the Army not wanting magazine rifles becase their men would just blow through ammo are half-true. Yes, they were trying to keep military spending down, but also the logistic lines of the Wild West were so long that entire companies were often having to ration ammo to their troops. (Also in this time there weren't many nations that were interested is challenging America's sovereignty. Europe was over in Europe being Europe to each other, and neither Mexico nor Canada were really capable of taking on the US even in its weakened state. Thus the US armed forces turned its attention to more internal affairs, like taming the Wild West.) It wasn't until the late 1880's that America had recovered enough from the lingering economic and psychologic effects that they felt comfortable giving the military more money, and it still wasn't until World War I that those gates would open fully.
