Yes, there was a firing pin recall. I replaced my own firing pin. You can call Winchester and get a new firing pin and a $15 check to have the pin installed by a gunsmith--but you have to send back the old pin first. The problem with the old pin is that it could break and protrude through the firing pin hole in the bolt, causing the cartridge to fire before the bolt had locked up. At best such a "slam fire" would wreck the receiver; at worst the shooter could be seriously injured or maybe even killed. You can also get stainless gas pistons from Brownells--highly recommended since the carbon steel ones original to the rifle can easily corrode. The Model 100 must be kept surgically clean to function properly--and that includes keeping the gas system clean and keeping the chamber spotless. A dirty chamber will result in failures to extract. There are two extractors for this model, depending upon the serial number range. I replaced mine and polished the chamber, and the failure to extract problems went away. If you are firing from a bench rest, the rifle may double--sending two shots downrange with one pull of the trigger. It is best to shoot the rifle in such a way that it can recoil backwards somewhat--like you would be shooting it offhand. Reassembly is very tricky--you need to hold back the bolt AND depress the magazine catch lever while putting it back into the stock--not easy to do. If you do this incorrectly, you can split the stock. The rifle has a rather miserable trigger--heavy and spongy; not much, if anything, can be done about it. Pre-64 Model 100s have cut checkering on the stocks; post-64 models have a basket weave pattern of "checkering." The post-64 model also has some lesser quality bottom metal than the pre-64. Accuracy varies--some Model 100 owners have gotten 1.5" groups at 100 yards, while others can do no better than 2.5 - 3.5 inches. When the rifle is working properly, however, it's a decent deer gun--if shots are kept within 150 - 200 yards. It's sleek and very good looking. If you get a good one, you've got a real prize. It was discontinued because it was expensive to make and the Remington autos were cheaper--plus Browning offered a high-end autoloader in their BAR line. The Model 100 in the video has those abominable "see through" scope mounts. If it were my rifle, those things would go into the trash and I'd get the lowest rings possible. You cannot get a decent "cheek weld" with those see-through mounts--and with scopes as reliable as they are these days, there's absolutely no reason to fear your scope will fail at a critical moment.

That is a fine example of a model 100. It sad to see so many abuse and neglected ones on the market. Many say that they won't shoot accurately and get rid of them. If they only knew that the rifle is a more a reflection of the owner than of it's function. The #1 culprit is the stock bolts are often under the wrong tension. #2 culprit is failure to clean and maintain.

... it's nice to see a fine old rifle that was as well cared for as the one pictured above ... my 100 has a 4 digit serial # and looks like it just came off the LGS new gun rack ... I've never had a misfire ... some 100 owners never clean their guns and drown them in oil in the mistaken belief that will make up for lack of maintenance and proper cleaning and when a firing pin that is totally captured in compacted oil, carbon, grit fails it's a "design problem" and back to the ole drawing board

Absolutely a one piece stock helps with accuracy! It’s the same principle as with a bolt action rifle. Biggest thing one can do is keep it clean and lubed properly and feed it quality ammunition. If one has feeding issues it usually is a dirty chamber and or ears on the magazine have became bent out of shape. Fine Model 100 you have and I concur it is the best looking of all autoloaders. Also, from what I have researched Winchester also changed type walnut they used in 1964 along with the hideous pressed checkering. Another tidbit is the was an experimental military version of the Model 100 and the gas system on these rifles was based off of the M14 with a piston. Another item that needs regular cleaning.

As you state, the accuracy wouldn't have much to do with the one piece stock. Compare it to the first Remington 742s. Some were accurate and some were horrible. My father's was horrible until he made a special scope mount that had the front mount way forward attached to the barrel. That mod 'steered' the scope to keep it tracking with the wandering barrel. My grandfather's 742 was accurate without the mod.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I guess it was just a bit expensive compared to some other rifles. Almost twice as much as a Winchester 94 when it first came out (In 1961 a model 94 cost $84 and a model 100 cost $155).

Love that rifle, i grew up in california and as a kid i would go deer hunting with my father. He had the winchester 308 model 100. When i was old enough, like high school age i would use it. In the early 90s my father passed away and i got the rifle. It is a fantastic rifle, im not sure what year it was made. Anyway thanks for sharing. Does 09 / 06 mean anything to you. ? Take care brother.

My Dad has this rifle in .308. Hard to believe the rifle is almost as old as I am. Sweet thing to hold to your shoulder. Has not been shot for decades, need to have that firing pin replaced, but, old man is stubborn and won't have it done.
@TOPGUNMPD08 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The firing pin should be replaced, but the recall didn't start until 1990 or so. So a quarter million of these were shot until then with just a few failures. There are always risks involved in shooting any firearm. If it were me, I would just shoot it.

I always wanted one of these in 284 win, but necked up to 338 or 35, and fitted with a custom stock, reminiscent of an M1 carbine paratrooper folding wire stock. I think that would make one hell of a big woods trail walking rigg...😁

The model 100 was only offered in the .243, .284, and .308. The Winchester 88 ( lever action ) was offered in the .358. Not to say you couldn't rechamber a 100 to .358Win. But as far as I know, none came with that chambering from the factory.

Cannot use Auto loading rifles here in PA for big game. so never owned any but every one I have shot had a horrible trigger. LOL As for the 1 piece stock helping accuracy I wouldn't want to know what the accuracy was with a 2 piece stock. A Remington 740 or 7400 is much more accurate. That being said the Winchester is plenty accurate for the deer and bear hunting it was made for. If we were allowed Semi autos I would be more than happy with a Winchester 100.

Don't speak or read Spanish. Sorry. I do have a model 100 in 284 Winchester as well. The 284 is a terrific cartridge. If I had to choose between a 308 or a 284, I would take the 284. Ammo is difficult to find, but the 284 is ballistcally superior to the 308 especially at further distance. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@TOPGUNMPD085 жыл бұрын
Sure. If it is a 308Win and in good shape about $600. If it was made before 1964 you can add an extra $100. I also have one in 284Win. These are kinda rare (as are model 100s in 243 Win) and can go for a $1000. Again you can add a few more bucks if it is made before 1964. Condition will be the biggest factor when assessing value. Thanks for watching.

Mine keeps failing to eject, any advice?
@TOPGUNMPD085 жыл бұрын
Had the same issue with one of mine....pretty common. Make sure you disassemble the rifle completely (including the bolt assembly and gas piston and piston gas tube) and give it a good cleaning. If it is still malfunctioning, it's most likely a tired extractor or tired ejectors. I replaced both my ejectors and the extractor and it fixed the problem.
@TOPGUNMPD085 жыл бұрын
Also....when you clean the gas piston and gas piston tube, if the piston is corroded or gummed up it may need to be replaced. All these parts are available on EBay. Good luck.

TOPGUN_MPD08 The rifles pretty beat up someone before me had cut the barrel down to just over 16 inches I’m thinking maybe it doesn’t have enough barrel length left to supply enough gas

Check out Downeastgunworks. He has a video on the 100. Barrel length won't effect the amount of gas. I'm guessing the gas piston and tube are a mess.
