Windows 10 loses support on October 14, 2025. So why is Microsoft opening up the beta channel for Windows 10 again? It turns out they're planning some feature updates. We have also gotten some great news regarding extended support for Windows 10. Maybe there's a few more years of life left in Windows 10.

I don't plan on paying a dime to Microsoft for an extended support. And I don't plan to switch to 11 either! In a year or so, my dual boot might just turn into a single boot. The idea is not set in stone yet, but chances are high though.

If your computer can run virtual machines, you could run Windows 10 in a VM with a "host only" network so it isn't exposed to the Internet. I've done that with Windows XP so I can run Office 2003, and the combo is wicked fast with only 2 cores and 1GB RAM.

@@GoonyMclinux It is, really! My main OS has been Linux since RedHat was a free distro. After all these years though, I still can't fathom how to run Windower + FFXI under linux. It's the Windower part, the launcher, that seems to be the problem. Other than that, it looks like Mint that I'm using today doesn't provide drivers for my HOTAS I'm using to fly in MSFS. This can be fixed with drastic measures, I suppose : change HOTAS or change distro. Those 2 are literally the only reason I'm still having Windows10 on my computer :)

I keep seeing where Microsoft keeps telling the 70% of people that are still using Windows 10 that you need to hurry up and upgrade to Windows 11 before Windows 10 support stops in a year. They're having a hard time understanding why they're are still 70% of Windows users using Windows 10. They are morons, because they can't understand the fact that these 70% of people are using older computers (not ancient) that run Windows 10 beautifully and does everything they wanted it to do. Windows 11 even though it will still run on these computers just fine will not install if it does not meet certain criteria which includes a new enough CPU and has TPM hardware certification. Completely unnecessary for both of those. So they're telling 70% of people that they need to go spend $1,000 on a new computer just so they can use the newer Windows 11 making Microsoft happy. I have heard and read articles that Windows 11 is not all that impressive of an upgrade from Windows 10. I have four computers in my house all running Windows 10 beautifully, three of them will not upgrade to Windows 11 because of their older hardware which is stupid. Only my newest gaming/editing computer can and so far I refuse to. Everything since COVID is three times the price at least and they want people to go dump this money on a new computer for the sake of Windows 11. They are just stupid.

True. However, M$ has made it clear that they want their "operating system" to completely transition to a network marketing and targeted advertising platform. If Win11 can't be pushed onto a sufficient portion of the market, they can simply slide those "features" into Win10 at some point. Their intent is clear, however they end up pursuing it. It's time to move to an alternative like Linux.

@@Gelonyrum When Windows 10 was released, it came with Candy Crush Saga pre-installed for those who upgraded to or downloaded Windows 10 during the launch. So, if you were rocking Windows 10 back then, you probably had a taste of those colorful candies right out of the box! Windows 11 didn’t continue the tradition of pre-installing Candy Crush Saga, but you can still get your candy-crushing fix by downloading it from the Microsoft Store. I have never played Candy Crush, but tons of people do. As for Telemetry, During installation, you can limit some telemetry but for more, do this; Using the Settings Menu (Windows 11): Open the Start menu and click the Settings icon. Navigate to Privacy & security and then Diagnostics & feedback. Expand the Diagnostic data option and toggle off the Send optional diagnostic data setting -------------OR/AND--------------- Open the Start menu and search for “Services.” Select Services (Desktop app). Find Connected User Experiences and Telemetry. Right-click it and select Properties. Change the Startup type to Disable -------------OR/AND--------------- If using the Professional version of Windows, Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and click OK. Under Computer configuration, expand Administrative Templates and Windows components. Select Application Compatibility and then Turn off application telemetry. Choose to disable or enable application telemetry and click Apply and OK A couple clicks later, reboot and check your network packets, if you know how.

If people refuse to switch, and they refuse to buy PCs with Windows 11 on them, and they refuse to pay Microsoft for extended support.. they will have no choice but to continue support. Every single video I've seen talking about 10's end of life and 11's /many/ problems inevitably has all sorts of comments about switching to Linux. After trying it myself, if my brother needed to he could switch rather easily since he only uses a browser, a text editor, and sometimes modded minecraft. They've pretty much gotten booting up and launching programs down pat, just as easy as windows or any other OS. However if you've got a lot of technical knowledge on windows and you want to do the same things on Linux, be prepared for frustration, as the security and permissions mean /sooo/ many things take extra steps to do, and I find any errors that popup aren't always very specific and you might have to try to find the logfiles or something or just blindly try stuff until it works or more often just opening a terminal and running it with sudo. I've even had a few instances where the thing I tried /seemed/ to work, but in reality failed silently with no error message. And sometimes even /when/ I manage to get something working, whether it'll /keep/ working the next time I reboot is up in the air.

I don't buy the excuse of them needing to change things to keep up with newer hardware because they always managed to do it in the past.

@@4TheRecord Your old games might have worked in compatibility mode. If not, know that Win 10 cannot run 16bit programs. You might note that while 32-bit applications are supported, 16-bit binaries or 32-bit drivers are not supported on 64-bit versions of Windows. If a program relies on 16-bit binaries or 32-bit drivers, it won’t run on 64-bit Windows unless the program’s manufacturer provides an update for the program. Natively means running directly on hardware, not through an OS. You can't have two operating systems running natively at the same time. The costs related to keeping backwards compatibility alive in an advancing OS and hardware environment is not worth the time, beyond what they already offer. Windows 11 has a built-in virtual machine for one time use only. There's really no hassle with making a virtual machine under virtualbox back in Windows 7 days and just keeping the file. It will always boot into virtualbox with no changes so you have all those games until you die with no further work on your part. Also, remember our CPUs are 64bit so attempting to run 16 or 32 bit code can be problematic if not impossible based on other variables. MacOS Catalina and up strictly does not run 32bit code since 5 years ago, but Microsoft still supports it.

I've been slacking on doing this, but I REALLY want to create a video discussing Windows 11. Microsoft really screwed the pooch on this one. I think Microsoft's requirements for 4GB of RAM, 64GB storage, TPM 2.0, and two or more cores is great put their arbitrary CPU requirements, having a Microsoft Account during setup, and their push for AI has made Windows 11 so damn unappealing. If they supported older CPUs like Intel's 6th Gen and allowed these features to be "opt in" like Windows 10 (roughly) was Microsoft would have a better adoption rate I bet.
@SpaceCadet4Jesus
@SpaceCadet4Jesus 2 ай бұрын
Microsoft's Minimum requirements for Windows 10 and Windows 11 is so meager that it is not entirely useful. Even the most basic computers nowadays exceed those requirements. You don't have to create a personal Microsoft account during setup, you can put in a fake email address or login name and a fake password, once it boots create the local account and delete the Microsoft account. Done. You also don't have to use the AI, which I find incredibly useful. Simply don't use Edge or just uninstall Edge. Also if you're upgrading a Windows 10 machine to Windows 11 and the CPU is not supported the fix is just a simple registry addition and install will complete. Make a video on these features.

I already PAID for the "privilege" of using Microsoft's OS. I don't plan on being a hostage for more money going to MS. I have built my last six desktops. What I have now will satisfy my computing needs for my personal work. Since I built my rig with high performance hardware I have no reason to throw that into a trash heap. I can and will continue to use Win 10 Pro. New hardware will not perform any better or any faster than my current hardware. My board does not have a TPM socket. That will not affect what I do with my computer. Win 11 does not offer any new features that I need. And I don't care one bit about Microsoft's new extortion plan. I know how to protect my computer. I built a new rig for my wife with Win 11. Win 11 has too many annoyances that could have been left out. I like the saying, "if it ain't broke, Microsoft will fix it 'til it is." If it ain't broke, leave it alone. Just because a program can be developed to do your thinking for you, doesn't mean it has to. There is no "artificial intelligence," people. It's a background program, written by software engineers, with automatic pre configured responses handled by a fast processor. That's all it is. Look at how many times people have received stupid responses from "AI." Why all the hype? The only place you need a copilot is in an airplane or ship. For those of you who have a TPM socket on your board, how many of you have actually purchased and installed the TPM? It must not be that important to Microsoft to actually verify the installation. This is like a car salesman telling you if you buy this car, you can add xyz accessary for X dollars.

Windows 11 was an unnecessary update. like every other Windows version, the new feature set, or limitations to use upsets Windows users. Many Microsoft Windows users would still be happy to be running Windows XP if Microsoft still supported it, and hardware manufacturers would be happy to accommodate XP users on their new machines with drivers and so on. Like with Vista, Microsoft wants to use the best modern hardware before the users are able or willing to upgrade to take advantage of the features. It's about time Microsoft and OEMs learned that the customer is always right.

Would be the inverse of what happened w/ Vista. But, yes. Vista got a bad rep out the gates for a myriad of reasons. Most of them were related to lackadaisical and uncooperative 3rd parties. So very many simple and common devices had lacking or non-existent support, *and* OEMs were selling PCs that did not have the specs to handle Vista. [My 'favorite' were the Celerons w/ 512MB of RAM.] (roughly) By mid-2008, support had improved greatly, and all but the cheapest and worst PCs on the market could run Vista w/o a problem. That did not change the reputation Vista had already earned, and Msft had to 're-brand' Vista into Windows 7. See: "The Mojave Experiment". TBQH, I find it amusing that "the most loved Windows" (7) *technically* ain't far-off from one of the most derided (Vista). Personally, I was a very happy Vista Ultimate x64 user. With 2GB of RAM or more, and at least an Athlon X2, it was a joy. I 'held off' on moving to 7 for a good couple years, just because I wasn't seeing anything 7 'had' over Vista. (IIRC, DirectX support, etc. was what got me to move to 7)

Personally part of the appeal of Windows 10 22H2 (for me anyway) is that they've/they'd stopped messing with it with "feature updates" that add more unnecessary junk that no one asked for (like Co Pilot or Recall). If they start reversing that now it'll probably accelerate my deciding whether to try and migrate away completely to some variant of Linux - not something that I particularly relish. I've been a Windows guy since Windows 3.1/NT both personally and professionally but I am not a fan of where they're taking the OS in the last few releases with built in ads, telemetry, demands for online accounts etc. If the Linux community could get its act together and standardise on one "default" choice that would be a big start. My other issue is trying to find a replacement for the Server-Client model offered by Active Directory. If I could do that and replace my Server 2019-Windows 10 home domain then I'd be very tempted.

Many of the system files will require the POPCNT CPU instruction from the Windows 11 kernel to the USB XHCI drivers, meaning that any processors without it cannot run the operating system. If Sandy CPUs cannot support this then, No Go. POPCNT was made standard in CPUs in the mid-2000s starting from AMD's Barcelona architecture, followed by Intel's first-gen Core i-series processors. This means that PCs manufactured in the past 15 years shouldn’t be affected by this new Windows 11 requirement. It also shouldn’t affect modern PCs unsupported by the OS, so those who've managed to find a workaround would still be able to run Windows post-update.

The prospect of Recall prompted me to move my remaining Windows PC to Linux. For me, gaming works now, and that was really the last thing that held me back. I don't claim it's for everyone, but I think this switch will stick.

I have PCs everywhere, which were all running Windows 10. I upgraded my 'Media' PC under the TV to windows 11 and hated it. That was eventually wiped with Ubuntu, from there I've changed my Mame PC to Linux, and my bedroom PC to Linux too. My laptops went to Linux from Windows 10. The only PC still running Windows 10 is my gaming PC. Once you get a handle on Linux it's just a delight to use. I have a list of all the apps I install and made a note of the commands needed to install each one. You quickly discover that installing apps is much easier than on Windows - you don't have to go hunting through websites to find the right download, wait for it to download, run the file, click through endless screens. Just a single command and everything is taken care of. Fab. For me, the key was to begin my journey into Linux on a machine that didn't matter. Once I figured out how to install everything I wanted, that was it. The whole Recall thing is terrifying - Microsoft have shown their true colours there. No thank you.

I've been on it for 3 years now and never looked back. I have a win10 vm with passthru just for programming my keyboard and mouse. Outside of that I never see it at home. Valves investment in proton really helped out to get me there.

@@bradmiles1984 As much as I hated Valve/Steam when they first got involved in Gaming DRM back in the day, anyone using Linux for gaming today owes them a hearty Thank You.

Not having anymore feature updates was actually a reason for me to stay on Windows 10! I really have no interest in Co-pilot or any other AI crap that Microsoft wants to force on us. I'm currently dual booting with Nobara Linux, which has impressed me a lot, so for me at least there is a viable replacement to Windows going forward when the need arises.

I recently bought a new desktop on marketplace. I couldn't pass up the good deal. It supports Windows 11. It has 11th gen core i5 and 8gb of ram. I can say that Windows 11 gets sluggish and their is not many features that are outstanding. So I can see why people are not busting down the doors to upgrade to Windows 11.

This is not good. Read between the lines, this is MS trying to scout out how many people are willing to pay for an OS as a service.

I bought a 5 year old decked out $4k laptop for around $300 just so I could upgrade legitimately to Windows 11. I decided to go ahead and do it as I figured these used laptops will get a lot more expensive when Windows 10 stops getting supported. So you can upgrade cheaper than paying for extended support, that is if you're willing to buy used.

If they'd make the security a benefit with newer hardware but allow the win 11 update on other devices, I'd upgrade everything.

I hope at least one of the incoming new "feature updates" for W10 bring a fully 100% working Dark Theme since it´s original was never fixed and remains as a half finished job, time to get back to work M$!.

I think they have to. SO MANY businesses use 10. My company alone uses over 7K Windows 10 installations. Imagine the millions of others. Much of those use proprietary software for Windows 10 alone.

The cynic in me suspects that these feature updates may include (a) the BitLocker stuff that many users don't want, (b) more ads and nagging to exclusively use Microsoft's ecosystem, (c) steps to downgrade the Windows 10 experience to make upgrading more attractive, and (d) a repeat of the sort of tactics that Microsoft used to try and get people to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but with Windows 10/11.

Tpm and supported cpu lists are bs. You can go over them. If your cpu supports SSE 4.2 instructionset and popcnt that comes with it, it can run w11 just fine.

Well I am not going to upgrade to Win 11 or Linux, and not going to pay outlandish pricings to extend security updates to my 3 Windows 10 systems. Windows 10 should still work for a while after support life has run out of time in Oct 2025. I think Microsoft is just doing a money grabbing gimmick to get people on the bandwagon for support. The high pricings is Microsoft trying to force more people to get Windows 11. I will see what happens when Oct 2025 comes around.
