Solid plan! That was my plan as well, but I cut my time on Windows 10 short, when Microsoft started advertising Windows 11 with a fullscreen overlay on my desktop a month ago. I hate stuff like that getting in my way. I must say, choosing Kubuntu and sticking to the plethora of beginner friendly guides for it online has made the transition very smooth and easy. I already feel very familiar with the (inner) workings of Linux and it has re-kindled my passion for tinkering with the system in ways Windows 10 either did not allow or made really difficult and frustrating to do. Game support is also great with Steam and Lutris (singleplayer), I'm honestly enjoying PC gaming on Linux a lot more than I did on Windows 10 lately. But I can't speak to how well e-sports titles with heavy anti-cheat programs are supported...
@RogueParatha5 күн бұрын
Remember to go for Mint (Cinnamon) if it's your very first time jumping into Linux. Many newcomers make the mistake of choosing Ubuntu, Manjaro, Pop_OS, etc as their first distro because they are the most well-known names among non-linux users and end up with a horrible user experience and a bad first-impression.

@mekelius4 күн бұрын
@@dieglhixMost games work (not all ofc, but more than on mac). Every now and then you run into something that doesn't work, but it's definitely not sh*t. With other apps, it's a bit hit and miss. There usually is an app or a script for what you need somewhere in the long forgotten forums-land, but it might not be pretty. Libreoffice is a bit janky, but gets the job done most of the time (once I tried to edit a giant-ass pdf file and it lagged like crazy until I changed some settings). Google docs is what I mostly use. Creatives might be in trouble if you're married to adobe or logic or such, but I do a lot of work with just gimp and figma. Hopefully now with demand increasing we'll get more better free options for things such as video editing in the coming years. And of course anything related to programming is a 1000 times better on linux. Hardware-wise, i've had more trouble on windows than on linux lately. Just last week my wifi stopped working randomly on windows only. So yea, depending on what you need, linux may suck or be the best decision of your life. But the basics are very much there already. Just don't expect to be able to do every specialized task without any trouble.

Even if you build your own, a lot of cheaper OS licenses are being sold as single-use. So you theoretically have to buy a new license for every build and they are only selling Win11. To keep your old single-use license you have to use the phone verification system to say it’s not being used on another machine. Also there’s always some room for error on compatibility if drivers are being released with the latest OS in mind, the average person is going to want to err on the side of caution.
