Actually, they'll be a performance hit for low end users when upgrading to 64bit from 32bit. For example if you upgrade to 64bit but you kept using 2GB of RAM, the system will bog down a bit because 64bit operation will take double or more resources compared to 32bit.

some disadvantage with 64 bit is that often when you have to edit the windows registry, you often have to change multiple keys/values. Whereas you don't in 32 bit

Just an FYI, There were versions of windows 32 bit server that supported up to 2TB of ram. The 4GB limitations were only on the consumer versions.

9:00 I've felt that problem myself, when editing photos. Sometimes, when I am working in large images, I hit the 4GB limit for 32bit applications, and cannot continue. That's pretty much the only time I have noticed a difference between 32bit and 64bit software.

32-bit Windows can also run some DOS programs, although DOSbox is generally better. Also, while it is nearly perfect, a lot of older 32-bit games have problems on 64-bit OS's if left unpatched (Sims 1 being one example). Also, the 16-bit problem as well as the DOS problem (assuming for whatever reason you don't need DOSbox) can be solved if you are running Windows 7 pro, as that allows you to download a free (and legal) version of a Windows XP VM. It can't do 3d acceleration, so it won't help any problems with 32-bit games (other 32-bit software may work though), but it will be able to run the same 16-bit and DOS software as 32-bit windows 7.

The protection level on system level was possible to realize since 80286 processors. And they used it, dropped it at some extent for 80386 and reintroduced it on 80486 for Windows, while other systems did enforce system protection through processors. But keep in mid, it meant to protect only memory.

In principle with PAE you could support up to 64 GB in 32 bit mode but Windows does not support it apart of some server versions. An individual program would still be limited to 4 GB but different programs could have their own 4 GB of physical memory. Some new programs require 64 bit like Photoshop Elements 2018.

For example, the old Motorola 68K family had 32-bit registers from the beginning. So by your criterion of solely considering register size, it would have been a 32-bit architecture. QUESTION: The 64-Bit version of Windows Media Player does not Rip CDs anymore. I tried the 32-Bit version of Windows Media Player, and it does successfully Rip CDs. I did a lot of research online and tried all the factors such as changing the "Target" in "Properties" and making sure "mp3" was at its "Best" setting, and making sure the "Media" features were turned on and making sure the "Default" output was the "Music" folder. Everything is fine - that is probably why the 32-Bit version of Windows Media Player works properly. But, why does the 64-Bit version of Windows Media Player simply "close" the moment I click the icon to rip the CD?

You forgot multi-core/multi-thread in both software and hardware (32-bit generally only has and/or uses a single core/thread meanwhile 64-bit tends to use multiple)

I'm dealing with this issue right now with a specific add-on to a program. Nero Premium had Image Drive as an add-on until Nero 9 - circa 2010. Image Drive can only operate on a 32-bit system and 'only' with Windows 2000, sp4 or Windows XP, sp3 (according to Nero support). Researching out the possibility of installing one of these two versions as a virtual OS on my 64-bit Windows 10, it seems that this would not be a solution because, as Nero support stated (buried in their chat from 6 years ago) that in such a scenario Image Drive would not work since the primary OS is 64-bit with a subservient 32-bit OS. Image Drive definitely does not work on 64-bit OS's - it does not appear as an option with Nero 7, 8, or 9 Premium and none of the drivers get installed. I've tried 6 virtual drive programs that claim they read Nero's nrg files - none do. Specifically, they do not read nrg-audio discs; they may read nrg-data discs but cannot confirm that. Using nrg to iso converters did not work as every program used to date comes back with a 'disk corrupted' message. The error message is, itself, an error as the nrg-audio discs were perfectly readable within 12 months when I was fortunate to find a 32-bit OS with Nero Image Drive running, so I did a random check of the 200+ nrg discs I have without a single failure. It appears that I am limited to installing a 32-bit OS but I am concerned that if I install it on a 64-bit-processor machine, I'm going to run into the same problem. I could not find anything where Nero stated that the machine could not be 64-bit capable, only the OS had to be 32-bit but did find this on the Nero 7 support page: The applications InCD, Scout, and ImageDrive do not "work in the x86 emulator that allows 32-bit Windows applications to run." Have you encountered anything like this where a program requiring a 32-bit OS will not install on a 32-bit OS if it is on a machine that is capable of running a 64-bit OS or has a 64-bit processor? Could it be the difference in running a 32-bit emulator (which is what installing a 32-bit OS as a virtual machine on a 64-bit system is I think) versus a true 32-bit OS?

Most people probably have the 64-bit version of Windows 10 installed, but the 32-bit version of Microsoft Office. Mozilla Firefox is now automatically upgrading from 32 to 64 bit. I believe both Program File folders first showed up in Windows Vista. Eventually, Microsoft may be a going away from 32-bit software and so future Windows may only require 64 bit.

Here is a question why does all Windows 10 operating software limit you to 8GB Ram when you can have more and how do you work around this to be able to use your installed amount? I’ve been using 64 bit OS since XP 64 and XP 64 Pro came out.

i have 6 cpu in one network.... originally all of them are windows 10 32bit which all of them are also visible in one network. then one got infected with virus. I reformat it and install a windows 10 64bit Generation 2. the problem is the newly formatted computer does not appear on the network only the 5 CPU can see each other and share files and printers. Question is ... can they both exist in one network and share files and printers if most of them are 32bit and one is 64bit... will there be a problem for a 64bit with 32bit?

All my old Q Basic programs I wrote and tested did compile with QB64, QB64 is really 32-bit but 64-bit Windows will run 32-bit programs, just not 16-bit, I guess what they did was make QB64 convert your programs into C++ programs then compile them, one of these day I want to try siving my program from getting deleted in C++ source to help me learn C++.

Reasons to use 32-bit Windows...1. You have 4GB of RAM or less. Older PCs, laptops, or tablets. 64-bit windows can be installed on machines with as low as 2GB of RAM, but they use more RAM.2. You have a 4GB and a slower processor. 32-bit Windows is slightly faster running 32-bit programs over 64-bit versions. 3. You don't have a lot of storage. I.e. 32GB or less for your OS. Older tablets, laptops, etc. 32-bit Windows only uses around 18GB for an install while 64-bit is around 25GB. This can quickly become an issue when you do OS updates which make a backup of your current system.4. Testing and/or development. Specifically VM, older system testing, driver development, etc. Many stick devices, mini-PCs, upgraded older devices, etc. may have one or more of these hardware limitations.

You mention features that have existed since both 386, 486 and Pentium, both being 32 bit. In fact, the 286 had ring zero protection in protected mode, and that was 16 bits. You also mention UEFI things as well. Take a class or two, or pick up some books. Any Intel processor can still boot 16 bit MS-DOS 1.0 through 6.22, and run pretty well any DOS program that doesn't rely on memory locations (or then-empty areas) that have changed.
