Since there seems to be so many people saying that I'm claiming that this isn't virtualization, let me clarify. This is obviously virtualization, and I think everybody knows that. When I say that "I'm not talking about using a virtual machine" I mean that in the traditional sense. Using VMware/Virtual Box/Hyper-V to create a VM, mount an ISO, and install Windows 95. This app is SPECIFICALLY designed to only run Windows 95 right out of the box with no setup needed from the end user, as I state later on in the video. That's what makes this project unique.

That is.actually, NOT virtualization; this is crazier than that. This is based on project v86, which is a program written on JavaScript which can execute x86 machine code! So, it will run on any browser which supports JavaScript, regardless of the architecture (you can run it on Raspberry Pi, a PowerPC Mac, some weird RICS-V machine or whatever). So, this is emulation, not virtualization; for virtualization, the architecture has to be the same between host and guest system, and a host system is just sharing part of its resources for the guest system and emulates the peripherals, so a guest system executes native code.

This is obviously still running in a VM, but one that was purpose-built. Reminds me of SheepShaver for running Mac OS 9 on Mac OS X, yes it's a standalone app, but also a purpose-built VM.

They made a Windows 95 app? Cool! Windows 95 was the first Windows operating system I used. I used to have an actual Windows 95 PC until early 2002. Nowadays I use it in virtual machines in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and VirtualBox. Great job!

Windows 95 was also the 1st windows of the modern era - it is much different from its predecessors, and if you time traveled and took someone who knewd win95 and showed him win10 he'd be able to use it without any trouble, since the core elements are basically the same it introduced start menu, which was one of the best choices Microsoft has made. they tried to remove it in win 8 but nobody liked the new solution so they brought it back in win10

No doubt (my 9x setups were in use so many years, they became insanely complex), but on the rare occasion that I'm in Win7 and find I need to run some really ancient software, this might be handy. Likewise on the linux box (yeah there's WINE but never have I seen anything run so slow on an otherwise-spritely box).

It's not unique. It IS a VM. like any other VM. It is a VM called v86 written in Javascript by a guy named Copy (copy.sh/v86/?profile=windows98) that has been wrapped and executed with Electron.

I normally like your videos, but this one threw me... and I'm seriously confused! Most stuff for Windows 95 was released on CD-ROM. And it's super easy to make and run a virtual machine. So is this of any use at all?

To some people it has use to it. Maybe in the future, the dev may add CD support, but yeah I'd still do a VM even though I tried this.

I don't use Windows 95 for classic software. I use Windows 98 SE not 95 but if I wanted to, I could install 95 and play SimCity 2000 on it but I'd use 98 for that. My 95 VM I'm setting up is just a tribute to 23 years of 95. I'm still not thinking 95 is better than 98.

I've got this on my GPD Win haha. Is there any way of getting a working sound driver...? I turned the resolution down to 800x600, not sure why it's set as high as *1024x768* as DEFAULT?! :-O

Win98 and 95 are completely different peaces of software. Win 98 is way more similar to Windows 2000 than Windows 95.

It's a purpose built VM, I like the fact it's based on open source as far as the emulator is concerned. Now I can almost bet this will be expanded big time even if Microsoft goes to shut this down. I still have my copy of Win95 and Win98 so that point is mute. The problem I see so far is the access to MS dos might be possible, but not tested? I am going to look at the source to see if I couldn't build an OS2 image within it. Imagine being able to boot OS2 right from your desktop. Why would you want to do this? To play solitaire. The Blue spine OS2 installer has Window 3.1 included! lol. Seriously, unless your a geek like myself who has tons of classical pc software, I don't see really why anyone would want to do this other then to showcase the fact you can and hey, it's America. Why not?! May the brave souls enjoy.

This is a neat concept, but it has a lot of issues. VMs are still the way to go if you don't have an old PC laying around.

Yeah, that is true but it's meant to try it on your computer not to install tons of software on it. A VM would be better if you were to do that.

here is a better idea windows xp you can do so much more with that and turn it into a real application not vm ware would work well if they studied an emulator instead of vm ware and allowedyou to export out of your vm ware to your normal desktop

Not quite. You can't just go straight from a DOS based OS to Windows 10.

@@haydenthirties4534 I know. I was just wondering to what level this app actually runs Windows 95. If it down to a level like a true virtual machine, then it could be theoretically possible. People have gotten W10 to run on some pretty old hardware. Though, I'm sure that involves disabling some pre install checks.
