Building an all new computer from 20 year old parts for the Windows 98 20th Anniversary.
Here are the specs of The New Windows 98 PC:
OS: Windows 98 Second Edition
CPU: 1GHz Tualatin Pentium III
GPU: Voodoo 5 5500 64MB
RAM: 512MB 133MHz SDRAM
HDD: Western Digital 120GB 7200RPM EIDE
PSU: EVGA 450BT 450W
MOBO: Intel D815EEA2U(after using it, I don't recommend this board)
CDD: Memorex 8xDVD+RW/+R 10xCD
FDD3.5: Teac FD-235
FDD5.25: Teac FD-55
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
Case: Inwin Q500N (3rd revision I believe)
Monitor: Hyundai ImageQuest V770+
Keyboard: Microsoft Natural Keyboard
Joystick: Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2
Gamepad: Microsoft Sidewinder game pad
Mouse: Microsoft Cordless Wheelmouse
This was a wild ride of a video. The Voodoo 5 being DOA was alarming and nearly derailed the whole project...twice. The Motherboard doesn't seem to support two floppy drives as well. I never had both drives working in it. I still need to do some more testing to figure out if I can put a different BIOS on it to support that properly. I also wanted to show POD running instead of NFS but it has some problems running, especially in Glide mode with the Voodoo5. And another problem was that I couldn't get the gameport on the sound card to work. I need to try using the VXD drivers still to see if that makes a difference.
All those problems aside this computer is really great. I was pushing its backwards compatibility a bit far with MS Flight Sim(only about the top half of the screen is meant to be shown) but a Win98 build like this is great for old games. Sure, you could buy most of these on GOG or use the original disks/discs in a VM. But those make for a pale imitation of the real deal. The struggle is part of the fun, although maybe not recapping a Voodoo 5 level of struggle.
This is going to be the start of a series of videos that will showcase different aspects of building an running an old computer like this. The upcoming videos about the parts I chose will help explain why they are the ones I went with and how well they work. This video was meant to be a cathartic romp of 90's PC nostalgia. There will be a lot more in depth content from this later.

Great video! Thanks for sharing! It brought back a lot of memories from that time period. I worked a lot with Intel boards a lot during that time because they were quite stable and reliable for the corporate world. It was fun to see one being built again. I agree that the Inwin Q500 was an amazing case! I think I had 2 or 3 of them at different times. Still have one in storage. I'm surprised that you put the CD drive and the hard drive on the same ribbon. PATA can only run as fast as the slowest device. Most CDs were usually capped at ATA/33 while the newer hard drives could go as high as ATA/133. This motherboard was capped out at ATA/100, but with that 80 conductor ribbon, you could definitely get more performance out of it with the CD drive on the secondary IDE interface.

Good recommendation by YT. I like specially the case where you can remove the mobo area. It is much easier to clean and also for troubleshooting unlike the new ones that are so cramped that it feels like it's the mobo area with a cover. Hope that casing will make a comeback. 😁

The removable motherboard tray is such a good idea, why was it abandoned? Not only is it convenient, but it also gives you a test bench to make sure everything works without having to install it all into an awkward to fit case and then uninstall everything again to fix it. Perhaps the modern day coolers just make this kind of design unergenomical.

Probably because without the motherboard tray the case is flimsy and flexes a lot. Most cases nowadays are made out of thin aluminium sheets while back then cases were much more rigid and robust, made out of 1.5mm+ thick steel.

@MC Rex That's question would be out of place in the Q&A so I'll answer it here. That is the music for the welcome screen. I never actually had the speakers hooked up in the video. I recorded the audio directly through my mixer to get it and the mics as one source. I suppose you could listen to it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7Sap6dju9S4lY0.html because I used the track as the music for the trailer for this video. I'm not sure if there is a longer version.

It's not a question, but I had this nice feeling when New CRT monitor was unpacked. And when whole machine started working it was huge "Aaaawwww!" for me, Yeah, I'm a sucker for these old computers. Brings me the memories of playing some games at my dad's work when he was on the overnight shift and I went there at the evening to play some games on that office machine. And when later I got my own computer. But that was when I was in a high school in 2002 already - way past this era.

Well from what I recall, 5 1/4” were “floppy discs” and 3 1/2” were “micro discs” but because everyone had been used to calling squares or memory discs encased in plastic “floppy discs” they just kept calling them “floppy” until even the manufacturers begin to call them “3 1/2” floppy discs” even though there was obviously nothing floppy about them save for the film the memory writes to.
