My school runs 10 users off one PC with Windows Server 2007, that has i7 870, 6GB DDR3 and a GT 210. That PC is really slow, but the cool thing is the ability to run multiple users at the same time.

I recommend first installing the free standalone Hyper-V server. Then install Admin Center on Win10/11 and connect to the Hyper-V server to manage it. With that done you can now install almost any version of windows as a Virtual Machine on Hyper-V. Linux can also be installed, but requires more work.

The things that are not said on this price page, is that it's just for 16 cpu core, if you want to have more core with your server, you need more licences, and let's not forget VM that also need the full core count for licensing (it's all obscure calculations), and we must also remember the need for CALs, and the license price depend on the server version. There are 3 versions of windows server, the basic one that is used in this video, sql server and exchange server that MS want to kill so everyone move to 365, but some company don't want things in the cloud. The server part of windows is a juicy business, there are licenses for everything and they are pricy.

The most common use case for Windows Server is an Active Directory domain. Most companies and schools allow you to use the same login details on all computers on their network, and even allow universal access to all your files. That's all done through Active Directory. It's more commonly known through the term domain, not to be confused with a domain on the internet. A domain is a single network of user accounts. One company might have multiple domains on their network infrastructure.

Great explanation. In my case the domain includes about 200k work machines and the active directory handles the security for everything from mail, calenders, sso control, application assignment, licensing, and much more. I personally am not in the group that manages it, but I regularly work with them so I get a good overview.

Some of the windows services explained below. - Active directory domain services This is what you'll find in your school or anywhere where you can logon to every windows pc with the same username and password. Mostly manages security access control. - DHCP Basically enables the server to function as a dhcp (subpart of a router) and assign ip addresses on the network. - DNS Enables the server to act as a recursive domain name lookup server for the local network. - File and storage services This one is used to host and manage file shares as well as workfolders if required. - Hyper-V This is a hyper visor service by windows. Basically let's you host VMs, kind of like VMware. - Print and document services Can manage multiple printers and make them accessible to the local network. - web server Let's you host websites on the server.

Its the lightest desktop oriented one. Workstations is heavier, and i got used to no more refs. It wants you to use a domain as well, but doesn't care if you use a workgroup. Server 2003 was my favorite pre x64 windows. Before vt-x, it was very useful to slim down sabdbox windows that can be put under a single process on the host. I hosted 5000 torrent seeds. It used to be significantly different. Usually on servers you could find Windows NT and you would find the other MS-DOS built versions of Windows in homes. Ever since windows 2000, both server and home Windows worked relatively the same. It's just that home versions of windows have their kneecaps broken

windows xp is when all versions became NT based (the home versions kernel was abandoned), and I don't know what you mean by "home versions" - but Pro is not kneecapped, and home is not either given who its intended for. I used to teach in a school where they used Windows MultiPoint Server. It's a pretty niche version of Windows that lets many users use the same PC at the same time, each with their own monitor + keyboard + mouse. I've never seen that version of Windows elsewhere.

@@andrewzasidko6595 No, multi-point server allowed you to attach multiple sets of keyboards, mice, and monitors to one physical computer, and use them to run different sessions. @@katbryce oh, didn't know that difference. Do you know how it would've been done in a classroom? @katbryce 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewzasidko6595 Probably a USB hub and a wired-through display connection. It might convert the signals to work over an ethernet cable, and convert them back at the other end, to benefit from the longer distance limits offered by network cables - increasing from about 10 meters up to about 100 meters. You probably need that to get from one end of the classroom to the other. These days you could do everything on a single USB-C cable, but that is a pretty recent thing and likely wasn't an option at the time.

@@katbryce Yes, that's how IP-KVM works, common server stuff. I wondered if Multi-Point server requires so much video outputs then. However, you can't talk about Windows Server without discussing the power of Active Directory, Remote Installation, etc. Basically all the things you can do to workstations and user who log in to the domain. You can change computer settings (how their desktops look and other settings), install windows remotely with preset settings, etc and this for different user and computer group - think departments in an organization). Windows Server is best when you have thousands of clients.

What method of backup would you recommend on a pc and for mobile devices? Upload everything to the cloud, or have a second hdd? backup everything manually and keep track of what is backed up manually or do you recommend a backup manager. Having a backup is preatty standard and easy for preatty much every kind of user but I see even power users struggle to find a convinient and suitable backup solution, withot having to code one from scratch. Especially considering how complicated it gets when you combine google backups, microsoft backups and various other services from your devices. Would a video about backups be a good idea? Personally, I manually back up my phone photos to the PC because I dislike the behaviour of google photos ore one drive, but then also back up my photos manually to one drive without syncing them to any device. It creates the kind of backup I want but with the negative side that I have to keep track of everything manually.

Licensing for Windows server isn’t always as lenient as desktop Windows. Server 2016 was pretty laid back, but starting with 2019 (haven’t tried 2022 yet) it will let you re-up the trial period a few times, but you will need to activate in order to keep using it. I build a lot of temp servers for work that don’t have a production use, just built and gone in the span of about a month, so we don’t bother activating those.

The intention is to be used as a server PC, hence the name Windows Server, so of course it uses less RAM and storage. It is NOT designed to be used as a home PC, with a lot of the general ease of use features being missing, because all server users are powerusers. Also, are you like that poor to just not be able to buy a half-decent DDR3 x2 4GB ramstick??????? Literally anybody can afford a DDR4 x2 8GB Oh, and my PC doesn't even use most of the ram, it hovers around 5GB usage. I do not have any intentions of trying Windows Server because it is not useful for me, neither is it for you unless you are TRYING to setup a server. If your intentions ARE to reduce ram usage, then use Windows 10 1909 LTSC. LTSC doesn't have bloat, and uses less resources. Do not use server as a lite alternative. You can even try Windows 10 Debloated, an even slimmer installation of it.

I would actually be VERY interested in seeing how a headless Windows server is managed without all those user interfaces. Last time I set up a Windows server it was server 2003 and the GUI was the default way of doing everything. Since I've gotten very used to doing things headlessly with Linux, I'm curious how a headless server install works. I may set one up in a VM just for kicks.

Just make sure you don’t open it up too much… I usually don’t even use it since or block remote access to the web-front since I don’t want people to be able to web browse into my core server… XD I then use a program to MFA access to the server.

I learned about Windows Server from some friends in school who have access to it for free as a student thing, so when they slipped me an ISO to play with, I cannot go back to Windows 10. Sure, it doesn't have a lot of things enabled out of the box, but I see that as a good thing since most installs I do of Windows 10 force me to spend the first couple days turning unnecessary things off like Cortana and Telemetry. Whereas on Server it's usually a few hours of enabling the basic things, and then enabling things I want as the need for them arises. I cannot go back, and I cannot recommend any other version of Windows any more. Besides, who actually pays for Windows now of days anyway?

There's Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC as well. If you don't use any of the server tools you can just use that. It can be permanently activated using MAS from Github. Note: Starting with LTSC 2021 only the IoT version has the 10 year support, regular version has 5. There's really no difference between the two. It's EOL date is Jan 13, 2032.

Thank you, I didn't realize MAS existed. Also, have you had any issues using LTSC, like with compatibility or anything? I'm currently running a custom Windows Pro ISO that I manually edited. So far, my windows store is broken even after I tried so hard to keep it working. My calculator app broke and I can't even reinstall it since Windows store is broken. Also, Minecraft now uses Microsoft store

@Jon717 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kingda2_ yes, MAS. It can permanently activate any version of Windows 10 via HWID, excluding Server. MAS only offers KMS38/KMS activation for Server. EzWindSLIC can permanently activate Server using SLIC activation, Windows 7 also uses it.
@Jon717
@Jon717 2 жыл бұрын
@@bubbleboy821 I haven't really come across many issues. LTSC doesn't have the Microsoft Store so it would need to be installed. If you plan to use the MS Store for the latest games/apps you might run into issues with not meeting minimum requirements down the line, since LTSC doesn't get any feature updates. If you don't really use the MS Store much, you should be fine.

I did used to use Server OSes like Server 2012 R2, 2016 and 2019 on my laptop because I get all the drivers working on it but for some reason on my Gaming PC which is an AMD, it was not able to install all the drivers specifically the Chipset Drivers so I just ditched Server on my Gaming PC and just installed Default Windows. The reason why ? Drivers downloading is off which means you get full control over what drivers you want and Updates is also manual. Now that I have my own Server for File services I was tempting to install Server 2022 and just have it a go but it's quite a bit complicated because for one, I need to remote connect to it and change a couple of things and for two, I only have 5 drives of 6tb each which effectively give me all RAID 0 as I can't RAID 5 this setup but I can from TrueNAS/FreeNAS which makes sense. So I also ditched Windows Server all together in favor for FreeNAS/TrueNAS and basically run RAIDZ1 or Z2 (I picked RAIDZ1)

Neat video, as someone who has several Windows Server Certifications, you should look into setting up another VM and make a server/client system and learn about Active Directory and Group Policy, that's gonna be what the bulk of your Windows Server installs are, also, the no GUI options is what I normally install on host that need to just do Hyper-V (if the client doesn't let me use VMWare)

You covered it well, from a perspective of why you wouldnt bother using it on a desktop at home. All of the services are really for authenticating, managing, controlling a companies computers via Active Directory, DHCP, DNS. Server also allows Windows to be able to address more RAM and cores. The one thing you did miss is the requirement for CALs and the cost associated with it for any device that uses services provided by the server, if you made the server public facing then you would need a different license

Roles: is the part which tells the system what services it is going to do. Features: the optional components and even the management interfaces. You can install the management feature onto a system without the role being installed, so you can manage remote servers. The management parts can be installed on Windows 10 using RSAT package. The are not installed be default, to minimize the attack service (i.e. AD attack vectors don't work on web server, as the server doesn't have AD installed on it, as the role is not installed)
